Non Lions Discussion 2024

We are so far off these teams on current form it’s ridiculous.

No joy in watching our team at the moment at all, players are not caring or trying.
It seems that it is not a club wide thing though, while obviously not the same level of footy the VFL side today was fantastic with the intangibles eg. effort, desperation, desire for the contest.

The spasmodic efforts of our senior team is a conundrum.

Regardless of the result here, Scott and crew have reset Geelong beautifully to go again. They have given the rest of the comp the blueprint for regeneration. Again.
Yes you have to give it to the Cats, far and away the most consistent club over a long period of time, also the most successful club this century with 4 flags along with the Hawks, so consistent.

The other club to admire re there consistency of being up there and abouts is the Swans, not as many flags but always competitive.

They still have most of their premiership team don’t they?

You're right. The team is still fairly stacked.

But the integration of young players is seamless. They know their roles and are ready to play. Players like Miers and Henry are playing well above what I considered their ceilings.

Then there is their history. They never fall off too far. This shows a level of foresight beyond what I have seen from the Lions.

And the half ends with (yet) another perfect example of why the countdown clock needs to be shown on scoreboards at grounds. No way Walsh is giving that handball running towards goal with 1 second to go. Imagine, the crowd would be counting down, would be exhilarating.

Teams would also look to shut down at the end of quarters more as well

Yeah, but they've added Max Holmes, Tanner Bruhn, Jack Bowes, Oliver Dempsey and Oliver Henry to their best 22 team since their grand final , while also giving debuts to recent draftees Jhye Clark, Mitch Knevitt, Toby Conway, Shaun Mannagh, Shannon Neale and Oisin Mullin this season.

Because they rotate their squad, rest their older players and reward VFL form.

Holmes would’ve played if not injured. Not much of a rejuvenation apart from being a premiership team who could attract players from other clubs

Carlton #2 in last quarters this year. Geelong #14.
Carlton with 9 scores to 6 in the last quarter. Just couldn't take their chances in those first few minutes.

Game of the year. Best one I've seen anyway.

Geelong with less disposals, take less marks, have way less inside 50s (45 to 66), and despite having a lower kick to handball ratio, they also had lower disposal efficiency. On top of that they lose clearances 38 to 45 AND turn the ball over more often.

But when they got the ball their efficiency was brutal. Only 8 tackles inside forward 50 compared to 24 by Carlton, but when you make good decisions and your delivery is bang on, you don't really need much forward pressure. 28 shots from those 45 entries is an absurd percentage against a fellow contender. Especially when your 2 key forwards only take 2 contested marks between them. That's as many as our key forwards took on Thursday night.

Imagine if they were "only" able to break even in midfield.

The future of ball movement is here. And it's beautiful. Simultaneously breakneck speed but also measured. Jump on or get left behind.

Pretty much the opposite of what we do ; amazing that the powers that be at our club haven’t identified this and think the way we’re doing things will result in sustained success like the Cats and Swans consistently do. Beyond frustrating.

I don’t like him anyway, but I don’t see how channel 7 don’t have an issue with Luke Darcy commenting a Dogs game let alone with his son playing. The most bias commentator you’ll come across.

Except since 2022 we added Dunkley, Ashcroft, Fletcher, Gunston, McKenna and promoted guys like Payne and Wilmot

Seriously just put some thought into these posts before blindly having a dig at the club

Over a couple of seasons we overhauled our midfield adding Dunks, Ashcroft and Fletcher and our backline adding McKenna, Wilmot and Kiddy

That’s how you regenerate after falling short a few times

The reason they do McIvor is that they know a whole lot of people will watch because they want to hear how biased Darcy is and the idea of him commentating when his son is playing is the sort of thing that will light SM up.

In the TV industry they're either talking about you or you're dead.

Look at the top rating shows. They're all total rubbish.

The same execs treat footy the same as everything else.

At least Darcy is only the "expert" tonight instead of play by play.

Overall we've done a very good job at improving our list as far as top 25 or so given that we're not a top Vic. club

The job now is to regenerate them.

And try to find 2 or 3 from those who haven't had the opportunity who might be good enough.

I think that is the job most years. We are very lucky with the draft haul we're set to bring in. A top 5 talent, first round talent and some high quality academy players. Couldn't have timed it better, really.

Will be an interesting trade period I suspect - guys like Linc may look elsewhere as I think it'll be hard to fit him and some of the others in while our high end draftees + the ACL crew come back.

Could be the first time in a few years where sadly we may have to offload a couple . It will be interesting how the club handles this but it's a lot easier if they get other offers on the table first.

Been some exciting footy played so far this weekend (thought I’d never be caught saying that again). Common theme: fast, aggressive ball use. Notable for me that even when defending narrow leads late in games, both Port and Freo continued to look to score rather than shut up shop.
