Hi Guys, I have a SANFL query.

I have recently moved across to SA and bought a house down in Port Noarlunga.

Whilst I can't get across to the G to watch my beloved Pies each week, I would still like to have a footy fix.

As I am not up with it with SANFL team, I would appreciate some advice on who to follow.
Whether it be location, history, or some other reason.

I did look on the SANFL threads but there was little to no movement, so I thought to ask the SA club boards.
So there was you guys, or Port. I wanted an open and honest opinion.
So there was you guys :)

Apart from knowing Port have been hard done by for not winning the last 8 flags and apparently Ken needs to be sacked, there wasn't much more info to tell.

I am well aware that Adeliade have a feeder club in the SANFL, I am sure some of you had other clubs, prior to the birth of the Crows.

Any Info would be great.

Cheers

I’m Sturt so would suggest them obviously.

South makes the most sense in terms of proximity, but you’re probably committing to a lot of pain (they haven’t won a flag for 59 years), and I can’t remember too many occasions in recent times where they genuinely contended.

Glenelg wouldn’t be too far for you and as the previous poster mentioned they’re pretty strong atm.

While obviously a great move that would benefit us significantly, it's a bit rich for the "established in 1870" club to keep telling us about their rich history when they're looking to ditch all of that when it doesn't suit them

How would leaving the SANFL benefit us ? ......other than taking our ball & bat

What I do like is PORT throwing the glove on the table .....designed to shake the SANFL up

Pity the Crows doesn't get pro-active with projects such as Thebarton .....we just roll with the punch's like a punching bag

1. Our AFL listed players would be playing against other AFL listed players more often, benefitting their development

2. Relaxed list rules for top ups allowing us to field a stronger side when we have injuries, benefitting player development and results. Would be a better proving ground for potential delisted players we're considering drafting as well

3. Fairer competition rules allowing us to have a genuine crack at finals. Winning a reserves flag might be seen as an achievement worth targeting.

4. Better umpiring. We get absolutely reamed in the SANFL on purpose which is bad all around

5. More travel experience for junior players which will assist them when they have to travel at AFL level

6. We would play home games which would allow us to build an audience at our home base for die hard fans wanting to see the development of young players and prized draft picks

7. We could benchmark our juniors against others on a level playing field which would make talent ID easier as you wouldn't need to weigh up differences in the level of competition between VFL, SANFL and WAFL

8. More national exposure given our reserves would play against the reserves of other nationally popular teams

9. Don't need to fund the SANFL while being spat in our faces in return

Interesting that the current contract runs through to 2028, the same year we should become a member owned club

Port were the movers and shakers in the move to AO largely because they were bleeding money and battling poor crowds

1. Kids against Kids benefits no-one ....VFL standard is poor ....no development improvement foreseeable

2 / 3 / 4 .....just an emotional response, which I don't get
It's been posted infinitum on this board ....winning & a premiership were a distant gap behind having all our players together & playing the Crows gamestyle

Prove to me where the umpiring will be better ....how many VFL games did you watch this year .....any ?

5. Travel experience .....at what cost to have a reserves team travelling all over Australia ....I estimate the Club won't get change out of a Million $$

The kids get travel experience now, having to go to Noarlunga & Elizabeth :p

6. This is laughable, I'm sorry ....everyone said when the SANFL Crows started, they would go .....the Club offered free access for members .....no-one goes, no-one will go

7 & 8 ....not a great business case for all the extra expenditure & zero player development ....when the reality is people are simply P***ed at the SANFL & Umpires ......not a good reason

I wonder if the SANFL will poach Port District from the Ammos to keep a team in the region, then in 2030 PA Power orchestrates a merger in order to reclaim their heritage #oneclub.

Are there more kids playing VFL than SANFL? What do you have to back that up?

It's not hard George .....simply do the maths

How many AFL teams playing their lists in the SANFL
How many AFL teams playing their lists in the VFL

That’s irrelevant, they all have players who aren’t kids playing AFL. Wasn’t Chol, Soldo, Seeet, Burgess etc all playing VFL?

All these teams have the same list sizes as us so would rely on other players making the teams.

As for SANFL sides, they have juniors playing for them too.

The standard of VFL being worse than SANFL is bullshit. Just look at where mature talent gets drafted from, more mature players drafted from the VFL than any other league, many of which come from AFL reserves teams. You'd also be much more likely to face AFL standard depth players that are on AFL lists.

And that's right now. A national reserves competition with less restrictive list rules would be the destination for mature talent looking to get on an AFL list

Saying it's "emotional" that our player development would benefit from a legitimate competitive environment (rather than a rigged league like the SANFL) and that our players wouldn't benefit from much better top-ups is also bullshit. Our players are actively undermined by the umpires which makes it harder to learn our gameplan that wouldn't be hamstrung so hard at AFL level (even with its poor level of umpiring). And the quality of top-ups we are forced to have hurts our ability to develop our game plan because some of them are legitimately hopeless

The extra expenditure would be offset by us not having to pay the SANFL to play in it. We pay a license fee of $400,000 per year, which is more than enough to cover flights for 40 individuals across 11 away rounds.

30 ? ....no trainers, massagers, physio's, doctors ? .....no accommodation

$400 K Budget for 22 rounds ?

We'll agree to disagree

Are you expecting the VFL to let new teams in free of charge. There will be a license fee.

Given the AFL gives a distribution to each club why would they bother charging a fee if everyone is in the same competition they run?

Hopefully new competition, not the VFL. Start an AFL Reserves competition. 18 teams. Teams pull out of SANFL, VFL, NEAFL etc.

Not sure what it means for the future of the SANFL, the Crows annual licence fee and TV rights are based on Port and Crows being involved (as they attract the most ratings) which keeps clubs like West and South Adelaide surviving.
