Well they are both average which is why the club has secured the services of another ruck for next year.

And you can just see a star coming to us ob current form. We could literally have 4 of the most average ruck men ever assembled in one place next year. Or you know we will spend a future second round pick on their compo then sell off one of ours for a 4th rounder and they'll win the Brownlow at a new club. ;)

Longer's the better ruckman and Hickey's the better midfielder. How about that?
Maybe we should start discussing that. Given his numbers, which midfielder would Hickey push out, if played in that position? Steele? Dunstan? Armitage?

Your using a three game sample for Billys stats - one where he only played a half, one where it has been revealed he was severely underdone and one where he was clearly our best choice choice. Thats not giving a genuine picture of what he offer at AFL level.

Billy is better at getting the ball directly to the mids but is not outstanding at it, Hickey is a bit crap at ruck work, but his around the ground work is very good. Neither are great but if I was trading one I'd probably lose Hickey because he's older and a bit more fragile and would be worth more because his actual output looks better. I think Billy has a game that looks like it could develop into at least a slightly above average ruck game.

No matter where you stand on our rucks, the pressure has certainly been put back on Billy by this performance which can't be a bad thing. If Billy has a poor game he'll have to make way as Hickey is absolutely dominating the VFL at the moment.

Yeah Bruce should put some pressure on Paddy too which should drive performance.

You got to be joking aren’t you? Hickey gets bullied by more than half of the ruckmen out there, because he is not strong/aggressive enough. A ruckman actually have 4. jobs 1. win the tap out to your team’s advantage 2. protect your teammates at clearance/centr bounces, 3. when get the ball, hand ball to your mids 4. Mark the ball.

Hickey
1. Poor
2. Poor
3. ok
4. ok

Billy
1. Good, he more than broke even with most opponents last year, something Hickey can’t do.
2. Good, his physically and aggression helps the mids to win ball/protect ball
3. He doesn’t get as many disposals, but do you really want a ruckman to handball/kick a ball?
4. Poor, his marking is s**t.

So, Hickey’s built/physicality/aggression will never be strong enough for a dominant AFL ruck, he used to play volley ball as a junior. Not saying Longer is brilliant, he is also limited as a ruckmen because his around the ground work is poor. But we’re picking a ruckman, not a mid. so, counting on disposal numbers alone is missing the point. The fact that last year our contested ball numbers and clearance numbers are so much better (Billy) than this year (Hickey) has to tell you something about the effectiveness of each player to the midfield.
I've added another category you forgot (forward presence) and used one word descriptions for both

Hickey
1. OK
2. Poor
3. good
4. ok
5. poor

Billy
1. Good
2. Good
3. Pathetic
4. Pathetic
5. Pathetic

Simple fact is both have attributes we need but neither are A grade rucks - that's why we swap them on a regular basis.

Hickey got dropped after Round 12 because he had low numbers in his stronger area (possessions and marks) and Sinclair got away from him to kick goals.

So if Longer gets thrashed this week in hitouts, gets his usual 6 possessions no marks, provides no forward threat and Gawn kicks 3 goals, why should he play the following week?

Great picks again dave. Isnt Connelon looking like an AFL specimen now, and is that Danglelands with the arms?

I think it's Marshall with a haircut. The others are Bruce and Gilbo. Jingle-bells Southland is a little guy.

This is left field (perhaps too left field) but could Hickey be a Cox/Brown type full-forward? Would need to work on his contested marking, but feel as though he could be that presence at the top of the square. Has the engine to change it up, hit the wings, create a mismatch and play a connector role too!
