He has to get the balance right. He didn’t in the first half tonight.
Allir out actually could be a good thing for him for a week just focus on spoiling in a contest & intercept mark when you have a clear run without too much of a crowd.

Going shorter in defence for a week isn't the end of the world either we've looked a bit lumbery.

Was so nice to see that Jase actually realised that he truly belongs at this level and thought bugger it, I'm better than whoever i'm matched up against. Felt pretty similar about Mead when he came on, he just looked more composed even with his disposal not being spot on and ready to be an integral part of the team.

Just quietly, BZT another lowkey good game. Might just be the second best pick up after Soldo.
Sweet held his own. Jase was exceptional (as he was, with JHF, in last weeks drubbing). Willem the d’Artagnan of the midfield gets his accolades. Bergman and Houston great again.
Boak had a great first half/bursts.

Bank the win and move on. Did well given the injuries.

Hinkleyball rolls on…

People here are hilarious, normally our defenders are maligned for the double fist and not trying to mark at all. Now we have a guy trying to mark and he should be fisting.

Whilst every player and every play should be perfection, reality is, it never is.
Well if Nathan Buckley is highlighting the same thing & when you should be punching the ball at HT it's good enough for me.

We are talking a project defender that's trying to mark everything.

Good evening Dixon haters

One of the more bizarre cases of group think on this board. Has been clearly our best forward for close to a decade now and yet half this board thinks he's a spud and that 'the forward line looks better without him'. Actual insanity.

After a scratchy patch, his last quarter was great.

Bergman behind the ball looks so much better for us too. We need to find another wing to let him stay there.

Bit meh about Williams’ game. Nothing like his form from last year. Couple of good marks but lost out a number of contests and looked at sea with the ball coming in fast. Had Burton played like that, we’d be all over him.
Yep 100% this, Bergman must play back.. looks solid back there, just about our best mark back there. looks lost on the wing.

Although not our worst, Boak is playing to his age more and more. We seemed to kick to him a lot tonight including when outnumbered. He just can’t chase effectively anymore to close down opponents. His good still outweighs the bad, but once the opposition wins the ball off him, it seems like an easy escape too often.
He’s fallen off a cliff..

He’s become a fumbler

Ross Lyon can grind down games can’t he? Both teams had deplorable skills - dropped marks, fumbled balls, missed kicks. Was there dew?

First quarter: we rocked up expecting to win whilst the saints were willing to work. Had we kicked straight, the game is probably over. Our defensive set up was off and the saints had a clear plan to work through our zone - and it was working. Clog our zone to one side then break into space on the other side via a fast switch or force as to kick long and outnumber us at that contest - very similar to what Collingwood did without the talent to pull it off.

The second quarter saw an adjustment and we were able to improve our forward half set up. But the forward like otherwise remained a circus.
  • why do our forwards always lead to the pockets? Is that the strategy? Bad forward craft? Do other sides clog the centre so the only space is wide?
  • why is delivery and leading so bad? Badly timed leads - kicker not ready or takes too long, running under the ball, running away from the carrier when they clearly can’t kick it that far too you. Just a complete disconnect between midfield and forward line. JHF basically had to kick it to where he wanted the forward to be.

Second half was a scramble to hold on.

  • Overall they negated our halfbacks and run really well. Houston, Farrell, Jones and Williams were non events.
  • Our wings stepped up - Burgoyne played his best game for the club whilst Bergmann was everywhere. He’s smarts to drop back into defence when we lost shape was excellent.
  • Drew was excellent, butters was fine, Wines actually had a reasonable game it’s just the drop from Brownlow medalist to also ran is crazy. Didn’t mind him rucking every now and then either. Thought Mead was solid as the sub and had an impact - he is much better in the guts than half forward. Rozee was alright - gees that hammy hurts. JHF was brilliant - especially that final term.
  • Boak tries hard in one of the hardest positions- HFF, gees he needs to nail the goals though.
  • SPP well that’s devastating.
  • BZT was solid, especially the final term. Ratugolea is frustrating and clearly doesn’t know the defensive craft yet - does he get there? Alir was alright but the concussion hurts us for the showdown.
  • Sweet had his colours lowered initially but fought hard. Was able to negate Marshall fairly well.
  • DBJ and Rioli actually worked up and down and mostly did what we needed them to do.
  • Marshall wow that was a shocker. No confidence at all.
  • Dixon was great and looked good in the ruck took.
  • Mitch was alright, kick straight and that’s a good game.

Some general thoughts:
  • we get dragged down to the oppositions level very easily
  • there is a clear strategy to beat us, we got lucky that the saints weren’t good enough to execute, good teams can. This is on the coaches.
  • we looked really banged up and exhausted. Butters didn’t seem right, Rozee the same, just everyone seemed flat and down. Horrid to already need a bye.
  • Are we fit enough? Doesn’t feel like we are. Another five minutes and the saints run over us. We are terrible and conceding end of quarter goals - that speaks to mindset and fitness.

But of underrating of Sweet on here I reckon. Highest rated player on the ground. Came up against one of the top rucks in the comp. I thought he was fantastic.

Jase and Jason both fantastic. Dixon had a big game. Other than that, was a boring as fk game to be at the ground. Atmosphere was shocking.
How do we go from dominating Essendon a couple of weeks ago to now completely out of form and lacking confidence. Butters had another shocking game, 7 clangers.

Funniest part of the game. First quarter Rowan Marshall spends some time off the ground potentially injured, even going down to the rooms. So what do we do? Throw Charlie Dixon in to the ruck for the next centre bounce, then he runs forward and Ollie Wines is next man up for the ruck contest.
Instead of capitalising on St. Kildas sole ruckman being off the ground injured, we actually nullify any possible advantage by taking ours off too and sending a 187cm midfielder to contest the ruck.
It defies all logic and to be honest it kind of sums up everything I hate about this regime.

Sweet takes a s**t on soldo, he's haysey but with a gas tank. Mobile and attacks the ball. Would rather invest in him than a 28 year old personally.
