Just playing this exit interview idea out in my head. I reckon it’d make a good sitcom script.

“Wait a minute … you said you were bitterly disappointed when Junior asked for a trade, but you’re quite happy for me to consider my options?”
“Well that’s different.”
“How?”
“Well…”

For some reason, "King Nissie the 1st" is reluctant to surround the football operations with people of strength. Not since The Reverend have we had a really strong Head of Football.

Vozzo was good but he had been promoted through the Nissie 1st reign and hence was comfortable with Nissie 1st micro management since he had been promoted by his boss before..

Hence Nissie 1st is comfortable with The Pieman stepping up to do both roles. They are meant to be separate roles for a reason – checks and balances.

Hence Nissie 1st is comfortable having Gavin Bell step up as football manager and Ben Sharman as football operations manager. Blur the lines. Allow Nissie 1st to micromanage. Neither of these 2 have much of a profile having been groomed internally by Nissie 1st.

Folks - are you seeing the pattern. Like another institution in the northern hemisphere, the head of the family monarchy is likely to hold on for too long and pretend a son who has been promoted without performance takes over.

If you don't mind me asking, is there any evidence to suggest that Nissie the 2nd is actually in line for the throne, other than he is working in some capacity in recruitment? Unless I missed some important information, I feel as if we're joining dots here and then getting worked up about it.

Not having a go, I just want to get a measured outlook on the situation.

As an aside, does anyone actually have anything negative to say about Nissie the 2nd's work in the recruiting team so far? BOND 007 care to enlighten us about his role, how he's doing and how it came about?

One players is 3 years younger and would be here when we are contending. Wej ust spent two years supporting Jnr to get him back to play, so yes we are dissapointed he now wants to leave.

Pretty simple concept.

Pretty simple concept.

One’s out of contract and the other one is contracted for two more years, having turned down lucrative offers elsewhere.

Concept....not contract.

He turned down an offer from North to stay for a flag.

So what? That worked for both parties then. Well almost.

The situation now is totally different.

Do you think Gaff will get a contract extension in 2 years? I dont. So if Gaff wants to play for longer and earn more $$ it wont be at the Eagles will it.

Josh Kennedy Hawks to Swans
Burgoyne Port to Hawks
Trelor to Dogs worked out well for both parties.

Was Kennedy shopped or did he ask for a trade due to lack of opportunities? Trading a 21 year old who’d played 13 games in three years is a million miles from what you’re currently suggesting.

Port were famously very reluctant to let go of Burgoyne, to the point that the AFL had to step in and mediate the trade. And Port haven’t won anything since then.

Collingwood finished second last the year after they pushed out Treloar. They’ve made a prelim now, to everyone’s surprise. Come back to me if they win it.

Name three.
I think your wasting our time on this subject Miguel to be honest…. If you can’t see a need for change at West Coast and can’t see that the Club are professional enough to handle negotiations with other clubs and with current players over possible trades then I revert back to my first sentence.
I can think of two that came to our club recently alone. Mitchell and Petrie. Both got extra year or two playing and walked into coaching positions. Clubs got to free up salary cap and list space. Win win…. It’s not that hard

I blame predictive text.

No idea whether Gaff will get another extension in two years time. The club’s recent history with extending guys in their 30s suggests it’s very much on the cards though.

And you’re missing my point. The club has very publicly had a dummy spit when an uncontracted player has asked for a trade. To then turn around and treat other, contracted, players like assets, who are expendable if they don’t meet current needs would be completely hypocritical.

Lol. So the Trelor deal only works for the Pies if they win a flag?

Come on. You are better than that mate.

Win win for Hawthorn? They’ve done bugger all since they invited Mitchell to consider his options.

North delisted Petrie. We drafted him as a rookie. They’ve done bugger all since as well.

Those deals might have worked out alright for the teams picking up the unwanted player but there’s very few examples of teams pushing players out the door and seeing success as a result.

Fine. I’ll give you Treloar. We’ll just ignore Burgoyne and Kennedy I guess.

Any other examples?

They look to be jettisoning Acres and perhaps Logie due to an inability to match contract offers from other clubs. Possibly Tucker as well
Logue has been the laughing stock of this board since he was drafted. Wouldn’t get a game at most clubs. Tucker is a nobody. Acres played one good year, give you that

Any chance we give Baz Williams a look in the back line? Hasn't shown a great deal resting forwards. Simmo seemed very keen to move Barrass up forwards. He may have parked that with the exceptional finish to 2022 that TB had, but if Gov returns in good nick, Simmo may Move The Magnets™
After the season Barrass just had he wants to move him up forward? Here I was thinking I was a crackpot for legitimately wanting McGovern to go forward.

It is not hypocritical for a club to pivot with list management as the need arrises.

Situations change for clubs and players.

If Gaff years ago asked to be traded under contract due to changed family circumstances is he being hypocritical?

Would the cub spit the dummy and hold him to his contract? No.

Or would they have a grown up conversation and work out what is best for both parties?

I don't think it's too far from the realms of possibility to sit with established players who won't be around for the next tilt and say that we will honour the contract that we have in place, but we need to fast track our rebuild so if the player is happy to explore their options we would be happy to facilitate a trade and cover some of the contract costs.

Then it's up to the player to make their choice - do they kick the tyres and see what interest is around, or do they stay on the retirement fund of the contract they have in place?

Gaffs one of the few without children in that age group, so he very well might be open to relocation. If it doesn't cost him money and he has the opportunity to potentially play in some finals he robbed himself of earlier, maybe he takes it.

Its not as black as white as saying "look Andrew, we don't rate you, so I suggest you start making some phone calls". The conversation is more about "we're going to be woeful with or without you, so if you're after more years beyond your current deal or playing exclusively in the AFL when we might need you in the 2s, we're happy to help you find a new club"

Jack Crisp has worked out well for Collingwood and Brisbane still do well
