Draft Watcher SMYTHE's 2024 Draft Thread

By the way, not having a crack at you. It's a question for all draft watchers/experts. On what do you base your rankings: how good they are now or how good you project them to be?
I know you are not having a crack, and I understand what you mean, and the question.

When you asked "So you are ranking them as under-18 players not prospective AFL players?", i answered with "not necessarily", which i see your confusion in.

This is what i mean....

My first rankings of the year are usually my assessment and ordering of draftable players based on their skills and performance so far against others of the same draft. That includes players that are currently injured, I rank them based on previous output.

Once the Aus games are done and the champs have concluded I will evaluate their physical attributes, performance against bigger bodies and other draftees at the champs level, previous combine results (to a degree) and overall potential.

So currently, (the start of the year) it is how I rate them against each other to this point this year.

The next rankings, now the Aus games are done, and the big board (once the champs are done) that is when the rankings will represent how I see their future standings.

So, any big boards after this first one will represent how I see their career trajectory.
Hope that clears it up a bit.

Won't you be watching SANFL, Vic and WAFL finals also just to be sure?

Which of the Top 4 do you believe shouldn’t be there ?
Well, for starters I think O'Sullivan is a clear #1. It evens out after that to my eye thus far. I could have Lalor and Smith ahead of Moraes, possibly Welsh too. I'm not sure I'm sold on Smillie, goes to ground a bit. Like Smythe says we'll learn more as the season progresses.

Smille game on the weekend was huge. IMO he is the clear 1.

On those rankings and Richmonds possible draft hand, the Whitlock boys , Shanahan Faull & Mraz would be right in the mix for our late R1/early R2 picks. Would help establish our long term spine along side Balta Gibcus Ryan Miller & Lefau

Has Leo Lombard been poor

he was looking like a to 5 prospect last year

No he has not been poor at all, however, he (for me) has stayed the same.
Clean, neat and a very good little player. You know what you are going to get with Leo.
Others have improved in certain areas and have shown a new diversity in their game and this is around the mark for me with Leo.
Josh, Finn (with what we have seen prior to this year) and Jagga are showing why they should be top 5 picks with their midfield wares, Levi slots into that group a little bit too, but can go forward and back and is super consistent if not a little selfish with his game style, Christian is super quick and has a burst from stoppage like not many others and can run all day up the wings.
Luke is showing everyone what I already knew he could do (as I stated at the start of the year) and is getting better as the year progresses, Sid I have always rated higher, and when he starts playing again, he will build his year, Taj and Joe are both quick, slippery and kicking bags of goals, Tyler is a point of difference forward playing similar to Fogarty of Adelaide at the moment; therefore Leo's place on my rankings is about within the next 2 or 3, which as it stands is 12.
I think he has great football IQ and ball use, is unselfish and does the 1%'s, he is a super player and i think he is set for the 7-15 range.
