Autopsy Round 10, 2024: Hawks get pipped by Power

It sucks we lost, especially a game we were in front for for all but the last 10 seconds.

But look at the positives:
Played against a team who are top 8 fancies, on their home deck, in front of a parochial crowd and matched it with them.
Dear continues to show huge amounts of promise. Had some excellent marks and 4 shots on goal.
Chol came back in and competed well - his repeat efforts and defensive work was great.
Meek gave us consistent opportunities in the middle and worked his guts out all day.
CJ gets through unharmed after his return from injury.
Massimo continues to be reliable with ball in hand and puts his body on the line.
Dimma kicks 5 and then almost saves the game in defence.
Nash's defensive work and use of his body continues to give us a real strength in the midfield.
Will Day getting back to his game impacting best and shows his class.
Our defensive pillars in Sam Frost and debutante Ethan Phillips did an unreal job of repelling Port Adelaide all game.
Shammy on Rioli - kept him quiet and didn't let him take control of the contest.

Even the most optimistic supporter today thought we'd struggle without Lewis, Sicily and Scrimma - we lost by a point in a game that will be a big learning curve for the team and one that they'll learn so much from the agony of defeat.

Young players make mistakes, young coaches do the same.
I’m sure if Mitch had his time over he’d do that last quarter differently. We will learn as a group, but man that one stings.

Injuries - they had star players out too, let’s not kid ourselves.

Umpiring - we had the better of it in the first half. Let’s not kid ourselves.

Loved the look of Phillips.

Breust, freshest on the ground but looked the slowest. Love him but he either struggles to adjust to the pace coming on or it’s time.

The Wiz is going to be a champion of the club, love everything he brings but he looks stressed with ball in hand. Let him go back and beat up on some VFL players to get his confidence back. O’Sullivan looks a player let’s see what he’s got.

We are going to be a good side but **** that hurt today.

Interesting presser from Sam who said the instructions were to not play so defensive and we need to understand when we are leading how to put more score on the board.

The gall of the entire playing group to ignore coaching instructions for an entire quarter. Why would the coaches allow it to persist when there was time and the game was in the balance?

Just watched the game now. I feel gutted, absolutely gutted. How on earth did we let them get back in to the game. We were so much the better side. We need to learn from this. Need to learn to not try to preserve a game even if you are 40+ points ahead. We gave them the game, we let them win, and its our fault only. Looking at the positives, not too many gave us a chance before he game. But we completely dominated the first quarter and did what other top 8 teams were doing to us in most games. We havent turned the corner yet, but still the last month or so has shown us we are heading in the right direction and we need to follow the course. We are on the right road. Not the end of the world, we will get stronger from these losses and learn to turn strong first quarters and haves into big wins.

On a side note pay Dimma whatever the **** he wants. If he was taller he’d be on a million a year, criminally underrated player.
Teams would cough up a fortune for someone like Charlie Cameron and I would pick Dimma before him❤️
Plays both ends elite, we can’t lose him.

The team was forced into defensive mode for much of the last quarter simply because players could not win contested ball. Port controlled the entire quarter. Basically, the team didn't fire a shot. And they were struggling with the conditions for the entire second half. I think Mitchell needs to get the players working on how to handle the ball, how to play in slippery conditions. This really stands out as a genuine problem now.

100% As long as we learn from our mistake asap!

A fair effort without Lewis, Sicily, Scrimshaw and Blanck
Only Soldo, Powell-Pepper, Rozee and McKenzie missing from their strongest lineup.

They pretty much had all their key talls at both ends available.

It was a damn good effort, leading for all but 28 seconds of that game.

Inexperienced players. Lack of on field leadership. Inexperienced coach.
Got to learn how to gear change during games. When and how. Both on field and up in the coaches box. That last quarter was purely that. WE lost it more than they won it and they know it.

Absolutely shattering.

Some thoughts:
  • were totally gassed. There's no other way to put it
  • not manning up on Houston around the arcs,.for 3 goals, was the ball game. Epic fail
  • Newk 2 kicks on the full in the last. Again cost us.
  • Amon in the last play looked totally scared. We missed the leadership of Sicily and Scrim
  • Phillips had 8 intercept possessions from 10 touches in his first game. The most of any player on the ground. He's a keeper. Could be our CHB for the next 7 years.
  • Butters had the best last quarter you'll ever see. What a star.
  • Breust is absolutely cooked. That whole sub move ruined us. Meant we had to send a bloke who'd kicked 5 into defence. Brain dead move.
  • Umps willed them over the line in the end. But I'm still staggered we didn't have anyone on the goal line for that last goal. Again, brain dead.
Port are unique- they have a full forward who can’t kick and a full back who is their leading goal kicker

Was a big reason we lost aswell. Really poor concentration from the half forward line to let him run down uncontested to kick 3 goals.
Bambi played on Houston a fair bit.

Not sure if he was responsible, but frankly it wouldn’t surprise given it’s his 3rd ever game .

That last clearance will sting and someone in the midfield will step up next time and tell meek to drop it to his feet and tell all present to pile on. One. More stoppage was all it needed.
But a one point loss you can point at a 100 different little things that would have gotten us over the line.
We all get till Monday then it’s all about next game.
Till then .

What a shame we did do much right early in the game to deserve the win . Bruest needing to win ball on the half back flank suggests what the mind set of the coaching staff was. Hopefully it’s a lesson learned from all and not a situation of having a fragile mind when we are under the pump.

15 minutes to go and we start playing as if there was 30 seconds on the clock and leading by a point.

Imagine how much they get out of it though.

Clubs train these situations week in week out on the pitch but to be able to try and execute it for an entire quarter will provide invaluable lessons moving forward.
