Ten years. Wow. Was a signing of significance for Arsenal. To sign a player of that caliber from Real Madrid of all places, after successive seasons of Arsenal selling their best players to the likes of Barcelona, United, City etc.

Will always remember that Mr Burns “excellent” grin on Wenger’s face the day before speaking about Arsenal’s win in the NLD, where he said something like “maybe we’ll have a surprise for you tomorrow”. A great signing in the initial years, formed a fantastic partnership with Alexis that papered over the many cracks at Arsenal in that era.

Then it all kind of went to s**t towards the end, after that contract renewal. His exit from the German national team was sad to see unfold like that. Certainly affected him. Ended up not even being registered in the PL squad despite £350k a week, was part of a toxic clique at the club and forged quite a vocal and aggressive fan base on social media. A significant and tumultuous tenure at Arsenal.

Still remember his first game, he laid off a fantastic assist like 30 mins in. He was a fantastic footballer.

We’re massive. Spurs on the brain again.

Very relevant to the discussion though - was probably the most significant round robin transactions made that summer. Bale from Spurs - Real Madrid, Ozil from Real Madrid to Arsenal.

From memory Spurs had made most of their signings already by that in utilising the Bale funds (6 players was it? Or 7?). I recall Eriksen being the clear standout from that group.

20 years since this happened. Mental.
