He interests me. What's gone wrong there? Looked to have a bit of ability but obviously off a list at the moment.

Some attributes that catch the eye-

193cm mid
26yo/100 games
Highest possessions in a game: 34
Highest marks in a game: 11
Highest tackles in a game: 10
Highest clearances in a game: 8

No those weren't all in the same game but are some decent peaks per category that he's reached.

Chatted to some hawks lads at the 2021 Arden Street game and they really rated him.

Of all the shitmen bandied around he's still the one I'd consider.

Massive no to Daniel Howe, I've laughed at him from a far for many years.

He's a poorly skilled fake tough guy, don't see what he adds.

Is there such thing as a former shitmen? Or is it a terminal condition?

I don't know of anyone who has come back from the affliction known as Shitemenitis.

Once a shitmen always a shitmen as we say.

We though do go early on occasion, sub 50 games is extremely harsh imo. There though of course are exceptions to the rule.

Prevention is the best cure, as they say.

Oh well

Shiels is a great pick up.

The expectation surely is that he doesn't play any AFL, but there would be a development coaching aspect to it upon finishing up I would have thought.

Set training expectations, keep Stephenson and Thomas on the straight and narrow and generally just mentor the young boys.

No issue at with him taking a rookie spot

I would actually expect him to play a fair bit next year. He was played out of position this year at the Hawks and whole he would certainly add a lot of leadership off field, it's that onfield coaching/leadership role that I reckon he's been brought in for. To show LDU, Jy and co how to manage the big moments in games. Will unfortunately take up a mid or HF development spot but the overall contribution should be good.

Understand that angle, however as has been mentioned before, if he is playing before any of the young lad sill be frustrated
