If they are going through their list trying to gauge players that want to move to Victoria and he’s the only one, they might not have the options.
When push comes to shove they will move a player. It’s the Judd deal all over again.

As soon as the player catches wind that they are expendable it will change their perception of how valued they are at the club.

AFL.com.au can reveal the deal would have seen North Melbourne end up with picks No.2, 3, 33, 53 and a future first-round pick for losing Horne-Francis to Port Adelaide and for shifting down the draft order from pick one to three.

The Giants would have moved up to secure the No.1 spot, with their picks No.8 and 12 heading to West Coast, who would have split the No.2 selection and also picked up the future second-round selection from Port, as well as a future third-round selection tied to Fremantle via North Melbourne. It would also have given the Eagles four picks inside the top 26 this year as they hit the draft.

Port would have secured main targets Horne-Francis and Rioli as well as pick No.36, which would have come from Brisbane, who had an involvement in the proposed deal to execute their trade for Gunston.

The Lions would have sent second-round pick No.36 into the whirlpool of selections and spun out of the deal with No.40 and 43. Although the Gunston trade was not directly a part of the agreed mix, it would have then seen the Lions likely send pick No.40 to the Hawks for Gunston, who will join Brisbane as a trade instead of free agency as the club didn't want to dilute its free agency compensation pick for losing Dan McStay.

Geelong was not involved in the talks, although Esava Ratugolea remains a trade target for the Power.

PROPOSED MEGA DEAL DETAILS

NORTH MELBOURNE
Trade out:
Jason Horne-Francis, pick No.1, 2023 third-round pick (tied to Fremantle)
Trade in: Picks No.2, 3, 33, 53, 2023 future first-round pick (tied to Port Adelaide)

PORT ADELAIDE
Trade out:
Picks No.8, 33, 43, 53, 2023 first-round pick

That is a better deal

So Horne for 3 + f1st and pick 1 and Freos pick for 2 + 33 + 55. Seems pretty bad unless I missed something. Downgrading pick 1 for almost nothing, or getting way unders on JHF depending on which trade you assign the picks. Hope we weren't actually planning to agree to anything remotely close to that or we are in for a bad time on Wednesday.

The best reach I have for 33 and 55 is that they’ll come in a bit once Brisbane are wiped out for bids, or they’d be in play for another deal.

7 open spots currently.
The draft will eat 3 of those minimum.
Your scenario leaves us 2 open.
Very doable.

Which is good because you’d expect to draft 4 and hold pick 1 in the PSD or rookie list but I guess that’s then curtains for the last remaining ooc guys.

It makes no sense. I can't believe that we would agree to such a rubbish deal, and if we were close to doing so then the club needs to bin out anyone involved.

I reckon we would have covered our massive holes well at that stage.
Not a bad place to finish.
Dunkley in the psd would be some nice gravy to go on top.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, anything more then our F2 and a sweetener, we should walk away.

He has some very appealing traits, but this could easily be Stephenson 2.0.

I love him, but imagine if we gave up an early pick for Jaidyn.

Let's be realistic, you do not shop around someone because you are confident in them coming good, you are trying to get out of it with someone else holding the bag. If you had any expectation that he was going to come good, you would never shop him around. It is why Clark is filthy, they have essentially said they have lost faith in him and for the right price they would cash him out.

Even in the 'mega deal' Port are once again conspicuously getting the best deal. I certainly hope that's not because we have thrown in the towel in regards to getting actual value for JHF.
I agree, it seems there is an expectation of us taking some bulk discount.

-If GWS are giving 3 and 12 for our pick 1, in our ins that is pretty close to 3 and Port's F1.
-That means we are getting two and a couple of late picks for JHF, which doesn't even seem to be the value of pick 1, let alone a contracted number one pick talent like JHF.

Hope this is just more spin that hasn't come from our camp!

Remove the 33 from Port, the 36 from us, give them to GWS and we get 18. That suddenly looks more favourable. 3,12,18 is a lot for 1, but the 2nd rounders would soften the blow considerably.
Has to be something like that, otherwise to me that reads like us splitting pick one and taking unders, just to break open a trade so another team can take our number one pick from last year!

I like it. There’s no standout number 1 pick so I don’t think you can compare it’s value to last year. Assuming we weren’t going to take Cadman at one anyway, why not slide down 2 spots to help us get another top 3 pick.

The draft quickly falls away after ~ pick 5. Since we so badly want two of Sheezel, Wardlaw or Cadman, I see pick 2 for JHF as a win compared to pick 8 + future 1st.

Why do they leave Port's F2 out of their outs? Looks unbalanced without the reason the proposal to be blocked.

I hope Brady does not lose sight of the fact that WE have all the leverage here. It’s about time we learned how to play this trading game properly. Sick of us getting bent over.

Trust in him (this time). Port have been going into overdrive with all this media s**t. It’s actually quite revealing which journos are singing their song
