Autopsy Round 4, 2025 - Saints upset Port in Adelaide!

Going a bit further i dont actually think they were THAT bad.

JHF was unreal, Butters was good but rusty. Rozee got owned but hes susceptible to that.

Aliir was good as was Georgiadies and Lord.

I think theyre just a very good midfield that can be flaky and almost nothing else. We exploited that.
I was getting frustrated that we were kicking it near Aliir.

Speaking of Adelaide....I was reading an article last week which featured Brad Crouch.

He said his brother told him that Adelaide had 91 % or their list do a full pre season.

Over the last 3 pre seasons....we could only dream at that type of number.

Without sounding like "Harry Obvious"....it's incredibly important to try and get as many of the list thru as possible for the crucial pre season..

I present Adelaide as Exhibit A your honor.
They have the best high performance guy in the league.

Garcia has the the campaigner factor about him, It will take him a very long way in the AFL.

Also JHF ignoring everything while running hin with his 50 is one of the funniest things I have seen on an AFL game for a while
Yeah, I laughed at that too. He even took a bounce as he sauntered in 😆

Hugo ran straight from the bench and made a beeline for Lynch when he was roughing up Wilkie.
On the weekend he was straight into Butters who had to go to the bench, shaken up.
They thought they could intimidate and bully the Saints, they were the ones intimated and put off and conceded 6 goals and the game.
Hugo is a footballing beast.
Yeah and he's a 19yo second year kid. 3 more years under his belt and he'll be an animal.

That was a legit "coming of age" type win.

Every one of the 23 played their role and stood up at various moments. No passengers.

Even blokes like Caminiti (who is learning on the job) - having been soundly beaten, responded with some key plays in the dying minutes.

The way the lads have responded after that dismal showing in Round 1 has been super impressive. Ross Lyon keeps talking about how "coachable" the list is and I reckon that'd be shown in what they've done right since that shellacking

So was last week. I hope they come of age again next week now.

Good call. It's just nice to see him show his wares.

I went off him a bit at the start of the year, but from day one I've said he has 'it', he does studf that cant be taught - not unlike Milne. He'll get his 2 or 3 goals most games and as long as he is impacting defensively and playing to the system he should hopefully stay in the ones all year now.

Guys like Lance are wasted at Sandy, being among better players makes him a better player.

I'd suggest when it's all said and done, Ross Lyon will be the biggest reason for his success.

Surprisingly good at coming up with the play. Had decent MG distance. He’s working quite hard, I thought he’d always be the type to coast along and do 10 minutes of magic a game. His work ethic and defensive stuff is well above what I thought it would be

And nice boy Nas is turning into a protective older brother too. Runs into the fray. He’s not the shy kid who looked like he was hating the spotlight any more.

Dougal Howard is going to be a very underrated inclusion when he comes back. We are desperate for a afl standard key back at the moment. Will allow Wilkie to play more of an intercepting role that gives him his aa blazers.
Howard is going to be a big plus when we get him back - he is the best one on one big defender we have , Wilkie is our best all round defender and having Howard playing on the tall forwards is going to allow Wilkie to be more attacking and Hammer is natural replacement for Battle.
Howard never gets any good feed back on here , but Lyon knows how important he is and it will benefit the whole team.

The same must be said when we get King back - we have been giving Keeler a crack but getting King back is going to give us a true target in the forward line - just hope the player's don't become to King focused because Owens and Sharman are both great options for goal as well.

I also feel Henry is a player who if fit adds x-factor we have been missing for years - get him right and back playing seniors and we will even be stronger , the same can be said about Phillipou.

Get these back into the seniors and we will be a force to be reckoned with.
And at the moment we don't even have our captain playing.

We got flogged by the Crows but have since played well to beat Cats , Tigers and Port and having such a young group of kids in the team is only making our squad so much stronger.
Hall , Garcia , Collard , Hastie , Travaglia are going to be hard to drop and the more senior players could well be under threat / which will only be good overall.

Other than AFL Media and Mr Cornes, feels like we are getting a fair bit of recognition after this win. Plenty of focus on the game style and the improvement in scoring, along with the performances of the kids.

Watching the replay, it is remarkable how well we managed to absorb periods of dominance by the Power and the umpires. Our team defence and ability to continue winning clearance really helped. We've done this pretty well since Lyon came back to the club. However the difference so far this year is that we can then find a way through to score, rather than being stuck without a goal. Last year we would have absorbed Port's pressure but then failed to score in the last quarter and they would have eventually broken through. This time we were still able to find a way to goal efficiently.

Also, Nas' goal not getting enough love. The guy ran 50m and passed it off, got it back, and then dobbed it from 45m on an angle. Genius.

Compare the pair.
One has played less than 40 games and less than 10 as a kpd. The other netted us a top 10 pick
One gets the luxury of 2nd or 3rd forward with Barrass behind him whilst ours has had to take the #1.
He’s performing admirably and giving his all. Bit more love for Hammer. He never gave up on the weekend.
He’s young and inexperienced. Give him another 30-40 games and we’ll have a great defender on our hands

If we bring back Howard, King, Phillipou, and Henry, plus the skipper, then, using this week’s side as the base;

B: Webster - Caminiti - Stocker
HB: Sinclair - Wilkie - Wang.Mil
C: Hill - Windhager - Wood
HF: Hall - Sharman - Wilson
F: Owens - Keeler - Higgins
Foll: Marshall - Macrae - Garcia

Int: Jones Byrnes Travaglia Collard
Sub: Hastie

Probably becomes something more like…

In: King Howard Henry Phillipou Steele
Out: Hastie Travaglia Byrnes Collard Keeler

B: Webster - Howard - Wilkie
HB: Sinclair - Caminiti - Wang.-Mil.
C: Hill - Windhager - Wood
HF: Phillipou - Sharman - Henry
F: Owens - King - Higgins
Foll: Marshall - Macrae - Steele

Int: Garcia Hall Wilson Stocker
Sub: Jones
Give or take some differences of opinion.
I’m loath to drop Hall or Collard though, in all honesty… and what about Clark, for example?

Good problems to have, and a world away from where we were post-Round 1.

Agree with your team , but as we know there always someone out due to injury or suspension - but that is a very strong side

Ross on Collard -

“We have been really keen to get him in, but we haven’t wanted to gift him games.”

“I would love to see him in 4 years”

“Hill has been saying look at those GPS numbers. They look like mine”
Where are these quotes from?

Over the last 3 weeks the Saints have been playing more kids than anyone else- including Richmond and West Coast.

Sure, the best two players have probably been Sinclair and Macrae- a pair of 30 year olds.

But regardless, the Saints are fielding a team with a median age of 22.

And we've been arguably the most impressive team in the AFL across these 3 rounds.

How good is that.

You're saying that like you've already established, as fact, that Keeler lacks work ethic.
You always do this—it's part of why people get frustrated with you.
For what it's worth, I generally like your posts, so this isn't about taking a shot at you. But seriously, you're completely overlooking the shades of grey here.
The reacts to this post says it all

The only factors to consider are one kid has a work ethic the other is still learning. That would be the exact reason Adelaide didn't take him at the draft, as the talent is obviously there.
Were you there ? In the draft room ? Do you think St Kilda would have stated him if he wasn’t going to work hard. Seriously.
