Autopsy Round 4, 2025 - Saints upset Port in Adelaide!

Dougal Howard is going to be a very underrated inclusion when he comes back. We are desperate for a afl standard key back at the moment. Will allow Wilkie to play more of an intercepting role that gives him his aa blazers.
Really think him playing depends on the opponent. They’d need three talls I reckon

Imagine, if will, a world in which we lined up with this side in Round 1, 2026…

B: Bergman* - Caminiti - Wilkie
HB: Sinclair - Aleer* - Wang.-Mil.
C: Hill - Windhager - Wood
HF: Owens - King - Phillipou
F: Higgins - Marshall - Sharman
Foll: De Koning* - Macrae - Steele

Int: Wilson Henry Webster Garcia Stocker Hall Jones Collard Clark Travaglia Keeler etc.
Include Howard at Hammer’s expense if you prefer… add the Viking into the mix in some way… the point I’m trying to make is that winning is what brings players in to the club…

This is what we could become if we continue to win.

It was premeditated for Port to go after Windy to protect Butters.
They got a world of shock when the usually timid Saints turned a push and shove on Windy into a full blown mallee.
Butters got belted by Garcia and needed to head straight for the bench.
It was a beautiful sight and I reckon it put Port squarely on its arse for the qtr resulting in 6 goals against.

That was a legit "coming of age" type win.

Every one of the 23 played their role and stood up at various moments. No passengers.

Even blokes like Caminiti (who is learning on the job) - having been soundly beaten, responded with some key plays in the dying minutes.

The way the lads have responded after that dismal showing in Round 1 has been super impressive. Ross Lyon keeps talking about how "coachable" the list is and I reckon that'd be shown in what they've done right since that shellacking

Barrat and Boxshall play field hockey?

But really, do you mean 2026?

I just saw something that I missed the first 3 times I watched the game. Clearly it wasn't pointed out by the commentators, either. But after watching that Higgins goal again I saw some brilliance from the man of the moment, Lance Collard.

It would need to be put on slow mo and almost impossible to point out, but look at this contest.

Ball gets sat on Collards head, Lance not only stands his ground over Sinn and protects the space (allowing Hall to crumb and give to Higgins), he doesn't try to mark it. He actually taps it into Halls path into the space he protected. This is elite...

It is subtle, and easy to miss - but for a skinny kid accused of only doing the easy stuff - I'm seriously impressed by this!
I don't like to get involved in hype, but Lance is doing it all ATM. He's doing all the team stuff off the ball, only occasionally forgetting to stay engaged which will get picked up easy enough in reviews.

Good call. It's just nice to see him show his wares.

I went off him a bit at the start of the year, but from day one I've said he has 'it', he does studf that cant be taught - not unlike Milne. He'll get his 2 or 3 goals most games and as long as he is impacting defensively and playing to the system he should hopefully stay in the ones all year now.

Guys like Lance are wasted at Sandy, being among better players makes him a better player.

I'd suggest when it's all said and done, Ross Lyon will be the biggest reason for his success.

Yes, yes I do.

And of course Barrat and Cripps’ Dad would be in the mix.

It would make life a lot easier for Camaniti too.

Glorious it was. Butters wasn't quite sure what just happened to him.
Hugo ran straight from the bench and made a beeline for Lynch when he was roughing up Wilkie.
On the weekend he was straight into Butters who had to go to the bench, shaken up.
They thought they could intimidate and bully the Saints, they were the ones intimated and put off and conceded 6 goals and the game.
Hugo is a footballing beast.

I think the tighter the windy tag the better. He hasn’t yet shown the ball winning ability without the tag.

Absolutely no shame being a tagger first and ball winner second. Cameron Ling made a very good career like that.
Fair enough, not saying he shouldn't be defensive. To me he just looked to worried about his opponent, gave away a few free kicks as a result and also some bad handballs. Just looked a bit too worried about his direct matchup and think he would play better with a little more licence

There was a lot of posters of which gringo was one who were upset post that port practice match - who thought the ass had fallen out before a proper game.

There was a few including BrutThough who pleaded for calm and to understand that we had a lot of injuries.

I was in camp 2, but post Adelaide with the injury list growing. I was very much getting annoyed.

Sometimes games are the making of lists and teams. I guess that Geelong game really changed things and it’s really started to roll.

I said 4-6 by round 10 would need to be the bare minimum for us to then go on a run for finals. Surely now we should be aiming for no worse then 6-4 and giving ourselves a big chance.
This season there was a lot of uncertainty. I think someone posted we had 17 players under 50 games and we had a lot of injuries to our more senior players. We needed young guys like Garcia and Wilson to step up and contribute consistently, which was a big if at the start of the season. The kids have massively stepped up as we can see now. Future is looking very bright at the Saints😍

Adelaide is pretty stacked with tall fwds, maybe that was it
Speaking of Adelaide....I was reading an article last week which featured Brad Crouch.

He said his brother told him that Adelaide had 91 % or their list do a full pre season.

Over the last 3 pre seasons....we could only dream at that type of number.

Without sounding like "Harry Obvious"....it's incredibly important to try and get as many of the list thru as possible for the crucial pre season..

I present Adelaide as Exhibit A your honor.

We have also had 21 list changes with the majority of those changes being someone in their first or second pre season.

That’s a big ask to get through a full pre season. The hope is that in another year or 2 we get those numbers as players get used to the loading.
