How old was Battle LOL

And Gresham, it hasn't netted us any benefit and it's been a few years of hocking players to find guns in the draft. We are going to have to over pay to replenish the guys that we lost, exactly what we did with Hill, Howard etc.

We need all of our kids to be guns or things could be very dire over the next decade.

The season feels like it's over and after the first quarter of the year. The way we played the last two games looks like we'll struggle to win a match. They are going to have to turn this around massively or our percentage will blow right out by round 3.

that footage tells me Steele either has a licence to be on the offence at centre bounces, or he is going rouge.

Either way - you can see now why Adelaide slammed all those goals on in that period.

Lift Steele!!!
Wait..the Captain is following team instructions, surely! He can’t go rogue and be captain. But here is the kicker. This must be the damn Match Committee! Or whatever that group is called. Who ever does the game play, set-ups thing. Sorry Corey. What is going on? Does Mr Lyon concur? Are things so bad, that we can’t afford Steele to do the things most would call common sense? Is he doing two, three jobs at once?

Personally if were at full rebuild now then id say were in the wilderness for quite some time with compromised drafts etc.

Again, i dont think this was the plan, we were supposed to be competitive this year and topping up with FAs for 26 based on 25 being a finals year.

Injuries have cruelled that and im not sure what 26 and beyond looks like now.

Hopefully we can make 25 something worthwhile cause if not, its gonna be a long stretch before were worth following again.
Injuries have indeed cruelled us once again. Most notably our great hope with a 7 year contract who, it still remains to be seen, may or may not be an injury bust. Am heading down for the first home game of the year and was really hoping for at least a competitive showing. Be lucky to get within 10 goals.

Don’t forget Ben Long, Josh Bruce and Jono Marsh

Oh dear, makes me wanna “Keel over”. …or has that boat already sailed too? Or permanently tied to a jetty next to the Beach Oval?
Keeler Caminiti Owens

Caminiti up the ground where he doesnt need any forward craft and also 2nd ruck

Keeler stay at home forward where he can use his forward craft. A good matchup with the 194cm Jack Henry this week. If it doesn't work, sub him out, easy. If sub is already used, swap him and Cordy. We'll have Sharman the week after anyway and Keeler gets the AFL experience he needs to get a kick up his ass

Did anyone see WHY Hill wasn't getting it.
He should have been the guy they were trying to dish it off to.

Really don't want to rewatch that game to find out.
On Hill, no excuse for him to play that badly. But.. he is your classic fat side winger using his running to find space. We were hardly ever able to use the width of the ground were hemmed in a lot on the thin side. Never going to get value out of a Hill type player playing like that. Similar to why he struggled with Ratts

Was at the game live and pretty much just got on the piss after quarter time!

Re watched the first half which was plenty and my 2c on the match

  • What concerned me is 3 out of 3 games we have started off asleep (Carlton, Port and now Crows)
  • Effort across the board was lacking - can't be down across all 3 in disposals, contested possessions and also tackles by more than 30% at Half Time.
  • Senior players missing who should be leading from the front (Steele, Hill, Jones etc) Nas had a first quarter to forget, he alone cost us 3 goals
  • Every Lucky bounce or move sat up for them. They were kicking goals out of there arse at one point.
  • We have been hearing about our running and how good of senior running team we are, yet to see it across all 3 games so far.

Overall we were never going to win against the crows away from home even when we have been favourites in the past especially with the amount of injuries to key players. Last week I saw Collingwood play like they had an average squad age of 75 year old against the Giants and a week later they all looked like prime Usain Bolt the way they ran.

Cats will be a good test as we usually match up well against them. We need our leaders and senior players to step up as they are the ones that let us down in the opening round. If they can't do it, then no point playing them and we go into full rebuild mode, play all the kids and go for pick 1, 2 or 3 before Tassie.

I think also that Hill is the type of player who can look very good when the team is playing well......but when the team is struggling he is not the type of player who will get you back into the game.

Don’t wanna knock the guy right out of the gate, but is Boyd mobile? I thought I was watching AI when I saw an effort in back pocket.
that effort in isolation was extremely poor, I'm sure ross let him know all about it. In his defence I think he cooked himself early, probably first game adrenaline things, Im sure he won't make that mistake twice

I thought we were tracking ok now I’m a bit flat after the weekend. I know things can turn quickly but hmmm this is looking like very long year already!
Must say Lucky bounce, your moniker image, icon thing, banner whatever it is called, looks cool and reminds me that we have lost something in the new emblem. I think it is the ribbon below. The new one looks shorn like the sheep stepped in a lawn mower. It nice that the new one wider but not nice that the ribbon is like that. Also love the St. F.C. bit, but I'm torn cos I like seeing St Kilda too.

This is what has been really deflating for me - we have a decent group of kids and some gun veterans in Wilkie, Marshall, Sinclair and Mecrae (plus solid contributors Wood, Steele, Hill). I feel like the plan was to be quite competitive this year and then give the top 4 a crack in '26 and '27 while we still have the senior stars, but now it looks like those guys might be done or over the hill by the time we're genuinely competitive again. The sad reality might be setting in for Wilkie, Sincs, Marshall that they'll never get to play in a top 4 St Kilda side.

Yeah looked like that to me, he was still getting from contest to contest but basically out on his feet. I was pretty happy with his effort personally.

Wilson - when a second year player stands up in an environment like that it’s very exciting.

Max Hall - tick tick tick.

Boyd doesn’t look like an AFL ruckman to me. He’s already undersized and he can barely move.

Windhager quietly with 14 contested possessions and not much midfield time.

Might be worth Steele going back to a run with role. Hasn’t been the same player for almost 4 years and gets run off on too much.

Why was Hastie subbed out?

Hard to take a lot out of that game, we couldn’t do a thing right from the get go.

I reckon Steele was better under Ratten when he was given a completely free license.

Either way, he's a shadow of his former self now.

He'll probably respond, but the issue is that he has to—and he's had to multiple times over the last couple of seasons.

If people genuinely believe where they finished in 2024 as an indication of who they are this year - then they have rocks for brains.

They recruited experienced afl talent - we cut that type of talent. Someone like Membrey would have been hugely valuable today.

They had a fully fit side. We have 9/22 best missing
Not many of those 9 are much of an upgrade on the 9 that still played. Structurally, absolutely, I get it. But that’s not a driver of a shellacking.

Maybe Adelaide are much better this year, no one will know until they have some opposition, but their finishing position for last year is hardly irrelevant. They haven’t played finals for a fair while and ain’t finishing top 4 and if we’re relying on “maybe they are” or they brought in some GOPs, then fmd. Defending the club to the hilt against so-called people with rocks in their head is just needless name calling and I’m expecting more of the club than that effort.

So what’s worse:

the side we took to Adelaide. Expecting a belting and getting one.

The side Freo have built and being torn apart by the cats.

Port - similar to Freo with top 4 ambitions and being ripped apart.

North playing at home to a side with a mountain of injuries like us and still losing.

West coast - who the media touted as a side that should win 7-8 games and currently looking like a rabble.

In context of round 1. We were bad. But the below all worse than us.
Don’t disagree with that, which is pretty damning for the others 🤣🤣. Doesn’t take anything away from what we actually did put up

Honestly though. Marsh was a below average player but not having guys like Bruce there who were at the top end of GOPs was poor management. We have head ****ed Minimum Queen like we did with Billings making him take the full weight of the club. A sensible approach is to build them up not throw them to the lions. We moved a lot of GOPs out and paid up big for others GOPs.

Ben Long too. He was no world beater but he was a hard body and an ideal tough competitor to protect a young side. That's what GC saw in him. We need to build a list and a style. Losing guys that need replacing again to take speculative picks who are unlikely to get us an upgrade is poor management.

Long would have been an ideal Lyon player too. He loved an enforcer.

I don't understand this sentiment. It's not the 80s, young players aren't getting whacked behind play. Is long being used as a human shield at the suns? Is throwing himself in between oppo players when they lay a bump on Lombard? It's nice sentiment but it just doesn't really make sense

Gold Coast offered Long a ridiculous contract for what he'd produced up until that point. We would've had to massively overpay to keep him.
