Hey Dylan82 there's some kind of bug that won't let you change the selection of Jones on the bench.

I know he's a good player but didn't think he was a lock 😄

Ok, let's get this back on track :)

Whilst things have been getting updated fairly regularly, I've realised I have neglected to post the match selections from the past few rounds...

Here they are then:

Round 2 (vs Greater Western Sydney Giants @ Optus Stadium [Perth Stadium])

2023-WCE-Selection-R02.jpg

Round 3 (vs Fremantle Dockers @ Optus Stadium [Perth Stadium])

2023-WCE-Selection-R03.jpg

Round 4 (vs Melbourne Demons @ Optus Stadium [Perth Stadium])

2023-WCE-Selection-R04.jpg

A debut for Hewett, followed by an unchanged squad selection (the first since Round 7, 2020), which invoked the wrath of the football gods and injury carnage thereafter.

As a consequence, the best available team since Round 3 has fallen back into F rating territory.

WTF are these ratings. I already have Long as our best player. I did have him as top 5, so that’s a great result.

Ratings updated after Round 4.

Injuries continue to take their toll. Despite protestations from elsewhere in the competition, no club currently has as many players unavailable as West Coast.

Ginbey despite only playing 4 matches, is now ranked ahead of Sheed as the 3rd best inside midfielder at the club (behind Kelly and Shuey).

Elsewhere, generational change in the competition appears to be occurring as outside midfielder and small forward ranks are dominated by younger players.

Not sure what caused the dropdown option on that cell to disappear, but it's fixed now :)

Squad Selection:

Round 5 (vs Geelong Cats @ Adelaide Oval)

2023-WCE-Selection-R05A.jpg

Gather round in Adelaide for a mismatch of epic proportions.

Hurn is managed, whilst Hewett is omitted and Cole goes out with a complication of the injury that killed his 2022.

Making returns are Witherden, Petruccelle and O'Neill.

West is named as the substitute.

The selected squad has an average age of just 24.7

Ratings updated after Round 5.

Just fold the club already. 17 players unavailable (with 6 more coming in as "test").

For the first time since this system was implemented in 2015, no West Coast player is represented in the rolling competition best 22.

Elsewhere, C.Oliver moves further ahead of the rest of those on top of the rankings and the key forward drought continues..

No tall playing forward is currently rated as A++ or A+ across the competition.

So Jeremy Cameron isn’t the best player in the competition after all?

Ginbey rated lower than Winder and West?

Surprising!

It's a product of his small number of rated matches (5) and the drop in output from the last two, which as a result are providing 40% of the score for his rating.

Those last two matches have come at an average of 5.5 contested possessions and 101 metres gained, so what that currently weighing as such a large proportion, his rating as an inside midfielder as fallen back dramatically as a result - so much that it is now (likely temporarily) below the ratings of West and Winder in their roles as small forwards.

That said, the Winder rating is preliminary also (based from 3 rated matches), and is skewed significantly by his 3 goal performance in Round 10 last year.

Ah yeah I forgot about Winder's good game last year! Fair enough

Squad Selection:

Round 6 (vs Port Adelaide Magpies Power @ Adelaide Oval)

2023-WCE-Selection-R06.jpg

Back into South Australia, what could go wrong.

Four changes to a team that can barely field a side due to the ongoing injury crisis.

Yeo, Hough and Long join the injured ranks, whilst O'Neill suffers the ignominy of being dropped when there are no replacements.

Shuey comes in with duct tape holding his hamstring together and should be good to go for perhaps two quarters before it fails.

Trew and Foley are named for their first appearances this season.

Bazzo, also making his first 2023 showing, is named as the substitute - an interesting choice as he will likely be coming on for Shuey.

Needless to say, the selection isn't rated highly...

The squad might be coming back in barrels at this rate.

Squad Selection:

Round 7 (vs Carlton Blues @ Optus Stadium [Perth Stadium])

2023-WCE-Selection-R07a.jpg

Just two changes this week.

Shuey [as expected] got through two quarters against Port last week before succumbing to injury again. Coming in to replace him is Hurn who missed the travels to his home state the past fortnight.

Trew finds himself omitted after just one match for O'Neill, the player he came in replace last week (and didn't even play at all for the reserves).

Bazzo is named as the substitute for the second week running.

The squad looks horrid. Rotham's 50th match seems destined to be a bloodbath.

What ground, OK Coral?
Trew came in as XON was so poor - but Trew proved himself even less worthy. I think we are so outsized in defence we need Bazzo as sub. If fitter he should replace Rotham.

Horrid is what we have available - by spirited, hard working high morale horrid.

Round 9 (vs Gold Coast Suns @ Optus Stadium [Perth Stadium])

2023-WCE-Selection-R09a.jpg

More changes forced by injury. There is some light in the news however with many players possibly returning over coming weeks.

Culley's improving season was prematurely cut short with an ACL and Hurn's old body is showing signs of wear and tear.

After being the substitute last week, Trew continues his yo-yoing in and out of the squad - playing rounds 6 & 8, but omitted in 7 & 9.

H.Edwards comes in to make his first appearance of the season, adding necessary height to an otherwise very undersized backline.

Joining him is Jamieson, who is named for the first time since Round 1 and Hough, returning after missing a month with a hamstring injury.

With his loads being managed, L.Edwards is moved out of the 22 and is expected to be named as the substitute.

The selected squad makes a slight improvement to be rated as 'E'.

Know you must have longevity of form in your formula but Allen as a C just seems off. 5th in goals competeion wide in such a s**t side is a great effort.

Allen is currently rated as a 'C' in the Tall forward category due to his comparatively lower number of contested marks per game.

In the Small forward category however, he is currently rated as 'A-', despite only being rated across 8 matches.

Have updated the squad selection post above to reflect this.

Round 10 (vs Hawthorn Hawks @ UTAS Stadium [York Park])

Travelling to Tasmania, F- across the board with an average squad age of 24.0

This was never going to end well.
What are the Hawks rating in comparison to before the match (or whenever you did the data whether it's before or after the match) compared to us because I'm pretty sure they have the same squad age as we do yet they look much better than we do even in previous matches.

They do have a pretty healthy team at the time unlike us.
