Squad Selection:

Round 20 (vs Gold Coast Suns @ Metricon Stadium [Carrara Oval])

2022-R20-WCE-Selection.png

It's 2022 and it's West Coast, so players return and then get re-injured.

This match sees Witherden and Rotham on the injury carousel, where they are joined by Bazzo.

Nearing the end, Kennedy is rested for the longest trip in the fixture.

Off the injury list [for now] are Naitanui and Petruccelle. Rioli returns to the team from his personal leave.

West comes into the main 22 after substituting against St Kilda - Dixon named as the sub to face the Suns.

Ratings updated after Round 20.

The slow match towards the end of this miserable year continues.

T.Stewart holds onto top spot in the player ratings.

After 31 disposals, 21 contested possessions, 16 clearances, 10 tackles, 7 score involvements and 591 metres gained against West Coast, T.Miller is now the highest ranked midfielder and occupies second place overall.

Squad Selection:

Round 21 (vs Adelaide Crows @ Optus Stadium [Perth Stadium])

2022-R21-WCE-Selection.png

It's all about Kennedy as he comes in to play his farewell match.

Elsewhere, Petruccelle and West are injured again after a single main 22 appearance (how awesome is our S&C team).

Culley is out due to suspension, but was injured anyway.

Coming in alongside the bearded man of the hour are Petrevski-Seton and Langdon, who going by the form of our S&C team, will no doubt be missing with injury next week.

Bazzo replaces Dixon as the substitute this week.

The selection gets a slightly improved 'E' rating as it hopes to send off Kennedy in style.

Ratings updated after Round 21.

In McGovern and Barrass, the club now has the two highest-ranked key defenders in the competition - too bad they can't get on the ground at the same time.

Otherwise the squad is a dumpster fire.

Elsewhere, Brisbane are being rated well above the rest of the competition - if they can find a way to overcome their mental demons with the MCG, they loom as a serious contender for the finals.

Squad Selection:

Round 22 (vs Fremantle Dockers @ Optus Stadium [Perth Stadium])

2022-R22-WCE-Selection.png

Four changes for the second Derby of 2022 and the penultimate match of this awful West Coast season.

Kennedy retires with 8 goals against the Crows, Kelly falls foul of the suspension lottery and Rioli takes personal leave to attend his father's funeral.

B.Williams is omitted after another underwhelming performance in what has been unfortunately a very underwhelming year from him.

Coming into the squad are Bazzo (last week's sub), Rotham, Nelson and Dixon.

Clark is named as the substitute.

Half of the selected 22 are defenders.

Yeah, I kind of gave up on 2022...

This was the selection for Round 23 of that year.

Round 23 (vs Geelong Cats @ GMHBA Stadium [Kardinia Park])

Never had a chance of winning that - thank goodness it is over.
Did Jamaine Jones rank improve as the season went on? Well by much?

Time for some updates.

2023 list for the club has been revised.

Ratings updated for all players - C.Oliver of Melbourne resumes top position.

Geelong, as would be expected of the runaway premiers, find themselves well ahead of the rest of the competition in the club rankings.

The Progress tab now details information of every player in the league and chart views of player progress go back to 2019.

Algorithm behind ratings has been further refined. In order to address the "Witherden factor" (players with high stats for DE% and metres gained being overrepresented in comparison to on-field influence), an additional metric measuring the metres gained differential of the team in proportion to the players time on the ground.

This further corrects players who get a lot of possession for little outcome. It also helps to highlight lower possession players who are defensive specialists that have a significant impact on the competition.

Nope.

2023-Progress-PS-JJ1.jpg

His rating during 2022 peaked at Round 3 (after his very good Round 1 performance up forward), but then trailed away very rapidly after that.

When we look at his outputs for non-key defence, disposal efficiency is pretty awful and the team metres gained differential to time on ground is shocking.

Compare that to another forward repurposed as a defender - D.Rioli

2023-Progress-PS-DRioli.png

That's a huge difference - and D.Rioli is currently by the system ranked as 20th in the competition for non-key defence.

Jones runs and takes the game on great - but misses targets far more than what you want coming out of defence, plus he doesn't do much when it comes to actual defending - because of that this system doesn't rate him as a defender at all.

Speaking of Jones.

Liam Jones?

He was a top 30 defender.

Bulldogs best 22 will have 8 Playing Tall. Your algorithm may not allow for this change. It is going to be a different game style….

Poor Witho! Used to be ranked 12th overall player in the comp now he can't crack the 200!

I get it though.

Right, Round 1 already...

Squad Selection:

Round 1 (vs North Melbourne Kangaroos @ Marvel Stadium [Docklands Stadium])

2023-WCE-Selection-R01.jpg

Chesser, Ginbey and Long named to make their AFL debuts. Hunt also makes his first appearance as an Eagle after moving from Melbourne.

Cole and Allen returning after missing all of 2022 further reinforces the feeling of a squad undergoing transition.

Petrucelle is named as the substitute.

Haven't checked yet, but the squad rating is A, right?

Also, Dylan82 , with debutants, how quickly can their rating become an A or B?

For example did Daicos's rating shoot up rd 3-4 last year or does it take longer?

Hey Dylan82 .

Wondering when this gets updated

I try to keep it updated by the Tuesday post-round, as by then the injury lists from clubs are available as well.

This week has been a bit of a nightmare with work (banking contagion, Xi's Russian holiday), but it will be updated before the Friday night match between Brisbane and Melbourne.

Thanks Dylan.

Man... if I didn't like Xi before... now he is messing up squad selection!
