Squad Selection:

Round 11 (vs Essendon Bombers @ Optus Stadium [Perth Stadium])

2023-WCE-Selection-R11.jpg

Four changes after arguably the worst match in club history.

Jones and H.Edwards join the injury ranks, whilst Chesser and Jamieson are omitted.

Hurn, Yeo, Barrass and L.Edwards return from injury and come into the squad.

Clark gets the job as substitute for the second week in a row.

Some notable additions, but it has no impact on moving the selection rating from F-.

Ok, back online.

The SQL server that generates this data died without warning prior to the Round 12 match against Collingwood.

Thankfully, backups did their job - however wasn't able to get it up and running successfully on a Pi machine, so for the meantime it's on an old laptop that was about to be decommissioned.

Anyhow, time to retrospectively update things:

Round 13 (vs Adelaide Crows @ Adelaide Oval)

No surprises Tex managed 10 goals, the rating for the defence was off the scale in it's lack of quality.

Ratings have been updated to after the Round 14 bye.

As we all know, the club is in a very bad place.

Squad Selection:

Round 15 (vs Sydney Swans @ SCG [Sydney Cricket Ground])

2023-WCE-Selection-R15.jpg

Four changes as the crab pot continues to be stirred.

Barrass, Duggan and Hewett return from their respective injuries and come into the squad. Joining them is J.Williams, making his first appearance since overcoming an injury to his spleen in preseason.

On the way out are Clark, Foley, O'Neill and last week's substitute, Trew.

Chesser, after having his best performance to date against the Crows, finds himself demoted to the substitute this week.

I almost gave on this to be honest.

Laptop went into a win updates death spiral after it blue screened and never recovered.

Have a replacement server now, but need to manually re-add the data for the last few rounds when things were offline.

Hopefully it goes smoothly and things are up and running again here sooner rather than later.

Fair enough. Sorry to hear of your server troubles!

Ok, finally got some time to get things done - better late than never I guess...

Ratings have been updated to the end of the home and away season.

Bontempelli has become the runaway leader ahead of all others, he should certainly be well positioned for the Brownlow Medal this year.

As for clubs, Carlton's late run of form sees them highly rated, whilst Adelaide would have probably fancied that they could have caused an upset had they found their way into the top 8.

Indifferent recent form has seen several sides that are positioned at the top of the ladder sliding in the rankings.

The best rated selection of 22 players for the season is as follows:

Among West Coast players, Kelly and Barrass make the starting line-up of the third team, whilst B.Williams is the second ruck for the 23 & under team.

F minuses for rounds on end, all you can ask for is consistency. 🤷‍♂️

Not to step on your toes Dylan but I thought these were interesting.

Hewett with the worst field kick in the AFL. A few factors at play there, mostly panic but hopefully he settles down next year because he's not that bad a kick.

This one is interesting and I think makes sense. SPS was damaging late with his kicking and at other times is very safe with lateral or backwards kicks.

Gaff, Sheed down the bottom is not surprising. Mids without pace or support slamming it on the boot from stoppage. It's been years of this s**t. Particularly disappointing from Sheed.

Hunt's is disappointing. He's not an elite kick but I'm hoping this is more him playing inside-ish out of necessity.

Hurn still our best backline kick, if a bit safe. Rotham (no surprise) with a horrific 'threat' rating. I reckon he'd be one of the 'disgruntled youth', so if he's being slammed for going cautious that's on the coaches. He needs to get out of his shell. More of the Rotham from the last 2 games please.

SPS is a damn good kick, very inventive and quick as well. Probably one of the best short kickers in the league

Check out the footage at 3:00 on this video

Within a second he needed to assess the options, see the space, make sure the kick was 15 metres, and execute. Very very talented dude.

Squad Selection:

Round 1 (vs Port Adelaide Power @ Adelaide Oval)

(Edited to correct bad data)

2024-R1-Selection-corrected.png

Round 1 again already.

Number 1 pick H.Reid makes his long-anticipated debut - named on-ball.

Offseason trade-in from Hawthorn T.Brockman is also named to make an Eagles debut.

Chesser listed as the substitute.

As has long been an issue, the woeful rating in the midfield tears down the overall rating of the squad.

The defence comes in with a 'C' rating - they'll likely need all that and some to make a competitive result of this match.

Thanks Dylan82

Have you changed your formula again? I see Witho has shot back up the ratings.

Good spot - no, the formula hasn't changed - just bad data full of errors.

Seems the transfer script doesn't like having to deal with "Round Zero" either...

Data has now been manually re-input, confirmed and updated after Round 1 results.

As for the club, the outlook remains dire:

Squad Selection:

Round 2 (vs Greater Western Sydney Giants @ Optus Stadium [Perth Stadium])

2024-R2-Selection.png

Three changes after the opening round loss to Port.

Allen suffers the captain's curse, and misses through injury (and will likely miss half of the season at least).

Gaff and Witherden run out of credits and get sent back to the WAFL to find form.

Coming in are Barnett, Jones, and Chesser promoted from being the sub.

Maric named as the substitute this week.

A weak squad going out to face the early-season front-runners for the premiership in GWS.

This could get ugly.

Ratings updated after Round 2.

The squad rating improves to F overall. Green shoots.

After just two matches H.Reid is ranking as the third-best onball midfielder at the club, behind Kelly and Yeo.

Despite retirement, Hurn still comes in higher in the rankings than any current Eagle.
