A win over Carlton (in Round 1 no less) certainly has turned a few frowns upside down :)
I was sitting in the MCC with a major smile on my face when we were 7 goals down because I liked how some of the kids were having a crack and putting in second and third efforts.

Just a little reminder....4 of the top 5 draft picks from our rebuild were NOT playing last night.

2021 onwards draftees....

1 Lalor - smashed it on debut. Sold to us by some foolish Cats fans as a K Mart pick 1. Looks a footballer's footballer.

7 Smillie - should see him in the AFL team by about rd 4-5.

9 Gibcus - has displayed tremendous traits but cruelled by injuries. May see a little bit of him in the AFL team late 2025.

12 Hotton - may be seen in the AFL team later in the season, hugely talented player.

14 Faull - Coming off lti, will play a block of VFL games and build his fitness, moving very well apparently.

17 Brown - seems to be focussing strongly on the defensive side of his game but regularly shows flashes of brilliance in possession. Did some telling things last night.

21 Trainor - really nice debut game & practice match, looks every bit a class modern AFL defender of the future.

23 Armstrong - we knew this guy had great kicking skills. That somehow fooled me into thinking he wasn't so strong in a contest, but we can see that is wrong. He looks a real find though will take some years before he can dominate.

28 Sims, Sonsie - the latter is struggling a bit, but does possess some attributes. Sims a 1st year forward/2nd ruck, if we can keep him out of the pubs he definitely has some promise.

29 Banks - looking more and more at home at AFL level entering season 4.

30 Clarke - recovering really well from ACL, should be seen around May, certainly showed enough early promise to suggest he can be an AFL player.

And last night we saw pick 55 Green & rookie Campbell make tidy contributions to a great win. Will give pick 58 Alger a mention as well, only just turned 18 and he is getting regularly mentioned by senior players & track watchers as one who has surprised with his talent.

That is a warehouse full of young yellow & black talent. Last night the median experienced player in the team was Dow who went in with 34 games under his belt, so there is obviously a huge amount of upside there.
congrats on the March premiership

Pit stops before '22. Still unbroken. 😽
Our only "we accept we might be poor for a while" rebuild of the AFL era was 2000-2003. Even in that period we played finals once and didn't finish bottom 4.

Everything else has been rebuilding on the run or rejigging things while still consistently playing finals/finishing top 4.

Gravity has to hit eventually but it's certainly been a decent ride.

Halley's Comet flew across the sky (somewhat underwhelmingly) the last time we finished bottom four (1986). It's now commencing it's return journey, so will Geelong finish bottom four before the year 2062 when it next appears?

What a shame Geelong has a 1 win season on its CV. The so called "weakest team in history" has equalled that just 1 game into the season. Damn.

Well, coming back after a two-year recess during WW2, which came about due to travel restrictions, we might have to claim a mulligan for 1944. But we only had 18 games to accrue our one win, at least last season you got 23 games to get your second.

But well done on your win last night, it would have been very heartening to see that especially when 41 points down. I have to concede, positive signs for the Tigers for sure.

Geelong won 3 games out of 40. They won 1 game out of 26, and you relied on a huge home advantage to even get that win. The only team they were beating was Hawthorn, whose teams of the era were amongst the weakest ever. Own it.

Tigers have just won 3 of 24 games with one of the worst injury tolls ever seen. These wins were against a finalist, a Grand Finalist, and a competitive team, interstate away, neutral venue, and home against the Grand Finalist. Tigers have never sunk as low as the excuse making Cats have gone with your 1 win season & 44 year flag drought. And lo and behold, here we go again, Tigers building yet another multi flag team, Cats building yet another big game choking team.

We had many players in their first ever finals series, massacre a side on the road in a QF and then lose to the premiers by a couple of kicks.

Geelong are well ahead, despite Richmond winning their grand final last night.

I'm sure most Cats fans 'own' as much as one can from something 83 seasons ago and during a conflict like WW2 which necessitated Geelong stepping away from being able to play due to wartime logistics and restrictions. Just like we own the fact that only 8.5 seasons later we managed to not lose a game in a 26 game period.

Yes, Tigers have won 10 of 12 finals matches against Geelong, and six of the last eight Flags the Tigers have won have come via a finals win over us. Of course that happens when one side is almost a fixture in finals, and the other pops up in brief but explosive iterations, as peaks among quite a large number of periods of ineptitude.

Jeezus you are a pathetic and bitter individual. Instead of enjoying your team’s win you are coming up with the same shit you have posted for the past 4 years at least. You are so hopelessly obsessed with Geelong it is beyond sad.

You say that like it is inevitable. What other examples of this exist bar Richmond over Geelong?

Is this not a thread to discuss the subject of the rebuilds of Geelong & Richmond & their future prospects? Did we not get an early indication the Richmond rebuild is shaping positively last night? Do we not need to set straight some of the absolute rubbish posted by Geelong supporters(amongst others) regarding Richmond's rebuild on this thread?

You don't just get to talk nonsense then we all conveniently forget about it on this thread friend.

Yet you chose not to reply to my relevant post on what the rebuild has produced for Geelong so far, which is getting a number of youngsters crucial finals experience taking it up to the best teams in the comp.

Was busy reading back over your forever soulmate Fadge authoritatively proclaiming on page 8 Bolton would be lucky to trade for a late first round pick....which is pretty funny because we only got 2 mid first rounders for him in what looks a very decent and deep draft.

Our draft hail looks magnificent. Lalor looks a future star, Trainor looks a future star and Armstrong looks a future star.
Plus there's the ridiculously tall prototype in Smilie, the highly talented Taj Hotton, bust a pack demon Jonty Faul, Thomas 'Dimma Simma' Sims who will hold down a key position in 2 to 3 years, and Jasper Algar who could play this week.
Add to that another 15 players under 24 and you have a cracking list with bright future prospects.

Not to mention probably 3 x top 6 picks coming in the next 2 drafts. And what do you know, players this thread thought were near worthless like Ross and Mansell suddenly look decent. And Brown, Banks....

Richmond will be absolutely loaded with young talent by the time we have completed our drafting. They would be if they stopped drafting now(they won't.) Boy, that happened quick.

It could be the quickest rebuild ever seen. The thing is we have 3 time and 2 time premiership players mixed with blossoming youth.
Players like Ross, Mansell , Miller, Banks, Brown, Campbell, Blight, Bauer and Dow know they have to step up to get a game and have a career. Plus there is natural improvement coming from them.
Young Maurice Rioli missed out on a game but he will improve and train hard and push for selection.
Plus there is Gibcus and 3 time premiership star Dion Prestia to come back.
I don't have a crystal ball, but I think we are only a few years off playing in Grand Finals again.
