Player Watch Pick #49 (2020) - Ollie Lord

I had high hopes for Lord coming into the 2024 season. Thought he announced himself after kicking 4 goals in the loss against Brisbane in the 2023 qualifying final. But he had a disappointing 2024. Hope he turn things around in 2025.

Two things happened. First he got injured in one of the pre season games and that stuffed the start of his season. And second Hinkley and Davies became more and more desperate as the season went on and decided to go with the safe option of Dixon rather than putting the development time into Lord.

I think he offers a very significant point of difference to the rest of our tall forwards because he plays with aggression and competes unconditionally. But he's not going to become the player we want him to if he just sits in the reserves.

Yep, 100% agree. Playing Dixon all year when he was obviously cooked and not offering anything is the same as when we played Finlayson as a ruck for half a season instead of playing a developing ruckman.

Sacrificing our future for a marginal if any gain now.

There was a gain and it would've been justified if they actually believed they could win the premiership. But we all know they'll have spent the last two months telling anyone who will listen that they're tortured geniuses that just didn't have the list and if Cripps finally gets his act together and helps them out they can give it a crack next year.

Hinkley and Davies both need to go.

Even if Lord wasn't going to become a gun with us, giving him games increases his trade value down the track. It's something we can't seem to get through our thick heads as we trade in tall after tall, year after year for premium prices.

It can go the other way as well. But not if you repeatedly drop them to play a short player out of position in their place.

The likes of Butcher, Pasini, Hayes, hell even someone like Mason Shaw could have been worth draft capital if we didn't torpedo their value at every turn for no appreciable gain. Hell, we got something in return for Logan Austin and great value for Dougal Howard.

Our approach to list management and tall development is super dumb.

Absolutely.

"We didn't have the cattle" which is why we spent an entire season wheeling out Charlie Dixon's rotting corpse instead of trying to develop a player.

Charlatans.

The injury before the season set him back I've not written him off.
While I agree that it impacted, his form in the preseason games before that injury was not compelling either. He needs to have a much more consistent presence throughout the duration of games. I was most concerned by his tendency to play from behind and trail opponents in all matches he played this year.

Injury didn't help his cause this season.
Still have hopes for him.
But yes, this has to be his defining year coming up.
Otherwise he could find himself traded.
