He
He looked awkward in saying it too, the pressure is coming.

AFL media are starting to say what we’ve been posting here for years. Gibbs a sacrificial lamb that might calm the industry while we wait out getting to our run of winnable games. Gibbs back next week for CEY and then our continuity can go to town against the bottom dwellers of the comp.

I hear this a lot, but Richmond just brought in a 3 gamer who didn't even play VFL last week, and a first year player off the back of a single VFL game where he had only 21 touches

Do you remember the good old days when the CEY’s, Lyons’ and Wiggs were torching the SANFL and the selection apologists would tell us how SANFL form doesn’t count. It’s what happens on the train8ngbtrack is what I kept reading. Now that it suits, we’re back at SANFL form. I’d rather take a punt on Fog right know than know that we’ll get SFA from Tex.

If you want to back in the club every time, there's always an excuse ready to go regardless of how contradictory it is.

A captain at the Crows is untouchable. Just ask Van Berlo. It took a sled for him to drop out.

Jenkins has been dropped before remwmber

Only because he avoided all body contact when coming back early from his rib problem. Don’t forget he didn’t set the SANFL on fire before getting back in the 1s either. He just went down there for a bit of confidence and once he had that, form ceased to matter again, just as it doesn’t matter now.

It is such a shit message to send to a young player, who is finally getting to have a crack at it.

Why do we feel the need to publicly state that his is basically a seat warmer until Jacobs is 'fit' - who hasn't been playing well anyway?

Where is the pressure, expectation, excitement and encouragement on him to take this opportunity by the balls, and demand selection moving forward?

That kind of carry on would be disrespectful to a loyal servants of the club. We can’t have anyone thinking that there’s a sniff of competition between Sauce and ROB. Mainly because there’s not, Sauce is locked in all year.

Remember when we couldn't select Lyons because it would make us too slow?

And we've just dropped two outside mids, and brought in CEY...

Part of the problem is Pyke is so big on his system he's always reluctant to bring inexperience in to take heavy role in it. It's why Doods gets stuck in the SANFL for two years and it's why guys like Jones and Gooch get thrown into roles as small forwards, rather than taking bigger minutes in the midfield. Plus his love of consistency hits as well.

So a guy like Jones might get in now, but his role is limited. In Pyke's mind he probably can't play McHenry or Scholl or others because he can't put multiple players into smaller roles.

If that were true, he would be the only coach to do so. The crows generally have never promoted young players and always never drop experienced players. It makes me wonder if it’s the selection committee that makes the final decision.

It goes back to the fact that we never tank or give a lot of young players a go.

Im curious if anyone knows about player contracts/payments.

Does Gibbs still get paid his normal weekly wage if he sits in the SANFL?
Yes along with our other overpaid underperforming players. Long contracts create an inflexible match committee, at least at our club. Makes the club look stupid dropping a player on big money and this is why the so called big names never get dropped regardless of performance.

Myles has a noticeably great set of hands too. I always felt we played him out of his role when we tried to make him a pressure/small forward. Like him running towards the goal from the midfield.

I hope we resist the urge to only play him forward this week and let him play his natural game from the midfield
he is named on the field in the centre

Selection committee are strongly advised from above by the real powerbrokers (Riccuito, Burton) how they want the team to be picked I would presume. Rule 1: Do not make list management look stupid. Rule 2: Do not make Riccuito and Burton look stupid. Rule 3: A player on a contract more than 3 years is never to be dropped(unless they come from carlton). Rule 4: Shut up and dont ask questions.

You really come up with the most batshit insane theories.

The funny thing is it's pretty close to what goes on down there gauging by their decision making. We all know certain players are treated differently down there dependant on contract size and remuneration. Has been the case the last 10 years. The club has history in not admitting mistakes and doubling down instead of fixing it.

Sorry for the late post. I'm 20-odd pages behind.
I started this post a fair while ago, then got interrupted by work and a BBQ at a mate's.
The gist was that I was not keen to see CEY back in the side:
""
this is a role that Greenwood / CEY can play. Now I am no CEY fan but if we need him for better balance in the side then I can cop that.
I was a big CEY supporter, happy to see him recover, impressed by his lean look after pre-season 2018,
until
he started playing. His defensive work is weak. When the opposition takes possession he stops and loses interest.
I agree with:
CEY can absolutely not play that role.
""

Later: Pyke dropped Gibbs to bring in CEY, with Poholke for Seedsman.

Not Mackay :anguished:. Not any of the other non-performing forwards (Walker/ Betts/ Jenkins or even Lynch) all 5 of whom have Old Boys' Gold Passes. The Age reported:
"" "We work on a merit-based system, guys earn their spots on teams," Pyke said on Friday.
"We've got some guys who are experienced and play a lot of footy but you still have to perform."".
Meanwhile, performing players like Stengle, Fogarty, Gallucci who bring the exuberance, energy and passion of youth are not rewarded.

I have not watched Gibbs all that closely, to be honest, but is there anybody here who'd drop Gibbs before Mackay?
Please tell me why --- not why Gibbs was dropped, but why Mackay was retained in front of him.

P.S. watched a fair bit of the Pies/Dogs game tonight.
ManOman, what we could do with Cox and Grundy in place of JJ and Jacobs! Never gonna happen, I know, I know :sob::sob:

Hardwick won a flag 18 months ago. He can do whatever he wants.
Yeah, and Pyke who took us to a GF in 2017 hasn't got the clout or guts to hire his own assistants or select players on form (in spite of what he said about dropping Gibbs).
On GF night, 1998, I said to my niece (who'd painted my nails in Crows colours, pre-game LOL) that she should really savour our back-to-back Flags, because we mightn't get another one for 20 years.
Little did I know .... :'(:'(

In a way I admire our brutal honesty

No point ROB being BOG, he’s out next week either way. Unless the internal messaging is different, but why would it be believed if Pyke is publicly selecting Sauce for next week anyway. Nearly no doubt Sauce will be not ready anyway and be putrid for 2 weeks. He won’t run the risk of ROB getting a few games and building into some good form.
What an incentive to give a young player to play his heart out

if they win the next two which is more than likely it will be 3-2

Pyke will believe we are capable of being competitive and is very unlikely to drop those two
I don’t see winning the next 2 as more than likely. North at their worst still manage to beat us.

I’d be grateful for the 2 wins (banking a win against the Suns) but this is North. Regardless of their shitometer reading at the time, we constantly fall over for them.

I’m in Melbourne for the game, hopeful, but reality is we’ve been too bad to suggest we’ll magically go against historical fact. So maybe Pyke won’t be so sure about the Crows’ competitiveness.
