What are people's opinions on Luke Urquhart as a late pick mid ala Chad Warner?

STRENGTHS:

  • Clearance work
  • Defensive pressure
  • Explosive speed
  • Leadership
  • Power
  • Scoreboard impact

While he can certainly add polish to his game, Urquhart has enough physical attributes to have an impact at the next level. He shapes as a later pick, though it would not surprise to see a club be enamoured by his strong inside game and form at state level to select him as a ‘bolter’ in the earlier rounds. There is plenty of competition for spots when it comes to midfielders in this year’s draft, but Urquhart projects similarly to Sydney star Chad Warner, who plays with similar power and hailed from the same club and school.

I’ve been pretty high on this guy. We need strength, defense and speed in the midfield, and he ticks those boxes. My only concern is his kicking, so I’m hoping he can improve that aspect of his game.

Definitely one of my sleeper pick along with Cooper Hynes

Lots of speculation around our early picks.
But who do we think might be there for us at #32?
What would be the priority and who might be suitable?
(Assuming we select wisely at #7 and #8).

I know this is tantamount to looking into a crystal ball, given the various factors, but we seem to be doing that with #7 and #8 anyway.

I don’t know enough about the players available to us in this range.
Pick 32:
This is where all the KPPs are rated and some small forwards. Mids are all at the top so there is a bit of a discrepancy here

Key defenders:
Noah Mraz
Harry O'Farrell

Key forwards:
Thomas Sims (fwd/ruck)
Kayle Gerreyn (fwd/ruck)

Small forwards:
Jasper Alger
Josh Dolan (hopefully not, massive dickhead)
Archer Day-Wicks

If we don't take 2 mids at 7&8, we'd need to be hoping for sliders because its a bit bare in the second round:
Tom Gross (hoping he slides...unlikely)
Christian Moraes
Xavier Ivisic
Luke Urquhart

The purported move up to two but also a split of 8 might be possible, but seems an odd strategy given where our picks are.

It’s probably more likely we are being painful and pushing the two to make a deal? SOS etc seem to like being pesky p’s in the a

On Hugo, I love his tackling but I haven't seen enough of him to even know what sort of player he will become.

Are there any player comparisons people can think of for him as to what his ceiling might be. I thought he was short but 185cm seems a decent enough height for an inside mid.
Danger. But slightly better at most aspects. Doesn’t have the same age, so that’s one negative.

Not sure we can afford to select this broken back mountain campaigner with a top 10 pick.

I'm sure lots of highly rated players have back issues, and it doesn't affect their draft position or later perfomance.

Lets think.

Jack Bytel ?

The only google search that comes back about Draper is him having a shin stress facture ages ago that he got over.

It still seems unlikely he gets past the Crows even if he does have back issues.

Hearing Jagga and FoS have done acl's and won't play next year. A real risk to take them in the first 6, probably best at 7 and 8.

Tom Libatore 2.0

Hearing the Bombers team got together & agreed that our team don't have the guts to bid on their boy Kako.

This is actually a double bluff because they don't plan on matching the bid and are going to laugh when we end up using a top 10 pick on a small forward.

Jokes on them because I have it on good authority that Dodoro is gonna cash in his single use "Override" clause and force the Bombers to match the bid, meaning THEY will use a top 10 pick on a small forward!

Internally Dodo has been raving about him and rekons he could be the next Dev Smith or maybe even another Jade Gresham!!

Dodoro?

Matt Rosa has that gig now.

If that were actually the case, they wouldn't have traded out pick 9. First trade period in charge and Rosa's achievements were to panic-trade out their first round pick and sell Stringer for a song.

Who was the other one? In my recollection when we selected Coffield and Clark, Coffield was always a HBF'er and Clark was a mid.
I was dirty wedding take two mids, but only Lachie O'Brien has gone on to be any good.

However I agree, I want two pure mids, don't be too cute.

Straight off the top of my head Billings was taken with an eye to become a full time mid.

I'll give this a go if I may?

I am a Hunter Clark fan and think he has a point of difference in the midfield.

However the collision injuries he has sustained for the past three season has really affected his match fitness, no real preseason for the past two or three and as well all know a good pre season sets you up for the whole year.

He got back on the park and had an unbroken block of 11 straight games. Once relatively match fit he really started to become valuable. He is the best dual sided player I have seen since Leon Cameron although when he got back on the field he was playing inside mid so concentrated on his right. His combo with Steele and Dow and Jones (when they both got match fit) was a big part of our very good last two months of the season.

If you go back and watch the highlights you will see he did a lot of the in and under inside work and got the ball moving our way from the stoppage quite a lot. It was a real improvement and hope for the future.

So I disagree with your premis he hasn't panned out.

So for my second however though....

You can be a fan but can also recognise that he has some glaring deficiencies to work on.

No.1 is his fitness. Never the greatest athlete at the club (although before his injuries, preseason, he was about mid table in the time trials) his TOG is below what it should be for a mid. He needs a big preseason without injuries to get his fitness base up.
No.2 he got a good block of games at the end of the season but he can't rest on his laurels. He was playing inside mid, we just drafted a multiple AA inside mid in Jack Macrae, we have Phillipou developing, Wilson looking for a mid spot, same with Garcia and Windhager. We are likely to get two top ten mids this draft with at least one being an inside mids.

So pressure is on to finally perform as a no.7 dp or he will go the way of Seb Ross.

Oh and Reid reminds me more of Dal Santo than Hunter Clark.

Go the way of Ross? 12year career, Multiple BnFs, 200+ games and life membership? Could be worse

Matt Rosa has that gig now.
There is a floor between the 7th & 8th in the Mertin-Flemmer building ... on that floor is a small hidden portal door thru which Dodildo enters from October to November to control the mind of Matt Rosa.

Once his job is done he gets ejected from Rosa's mind landing in the middle of the sewerage pit that is Windy Hill Oval

Dodo still hanging around the club.

Rosa doing the bulk of the work but Dodo gets 1 "Override" each off season.

Let's him make the call on a single trade or draft pick.

He's all in on Kako.

Isaac gonna be everything they dreamed they had with The Mosquito!

😛

Select 2 pure midfielders please

No more half back wannabe mids

What about half forward wannabe mids?

Grab Reid at 7 then trade 8 back to land Dattoli & Berry!

Forgive the rest of us setting our hopes higher than similar to the upper echelon of St Kilda FC 2012-2024.

Seb Ross was a great bloke but if he's our Gold Standard let's merge with Sandringham and give our AFL spot to Tassie.

As to this point which is getting some traction lately. There are 6 recognised top end midfielders. And we have pick numbers 7&8.
Hence the discussion about other players.
Again, there are 7 mids. We are making this Top 6 to suit our narrative. Reid is VM MVP, highly touted and highly performed, and should be seen in the same ilk as Jagga in the accumulator mould.
