2nds Gold Coast Reserves: Title Defense 2024

After the off season changes my expectations of the VFL team declined a lot.
Yeah, and more changes to come at end of year, you’d think.

I think we’ve just lost all our scoring power (which you expect losing the top two VFL goal kickers).

Playing some kids that are getting found out a bit too. Will be different at home when we can play our better academy kids.

That was a long quarter! My word. Feel like Suns blew it there with their composure at the end, but Swans were the better team for most of the day so can’t be too mad.

GCFC & SSFC DRAW 9.6.60 to 8.12.60

Disposals: Atkins (34), Jeffrey (29), Faulkhead (23), Davies (23), Moyle (22)
Goals: Long (3.1), Day (2.1), Macpherson (2.0), Casboult (1.1), Hay (1.0)
Hitouts: Moyle (34), Davies (1), Casboult (1) vs Sydney (31 combined)

Atkins ave 35 and Long 4 goals the last 2 weeks. Moyle flying as well

Don’t be fooled by stats. Atkins sold his teammates into trouble several times and Long basically stands deep in the fwd pocket. Works in the 2’s but not in the seniors.

Moyle had a cracking game though. Lots of clubs going to chase him.

Don't be fooled by a couple of bad disposals. Atkins is one of our best kicks and is finding it plenty. He is banging the door down

Atkins is better as a winger. Think there is too much heat in defence and he tries to always take on the player and puts himself under pressure.

Jeffrey is a good ball user down back and could get a role there at some point.

Davies is a backup mid at best, but is coming back from injury so maybe he keeps developing there.

Moyle is obviously our second best ruck.

Behind that, I don’t think anyone is worth pushing into the main team, unless we have an injury crisis.

Agree
Poor old Ratty came to us with huge expectations that way exceeded his talent-but he does have talent and unfortunately those high expectations based off contract length and the fact he's probably our highest ranked free agent since Riska means he's judged by a pretty sharp ruler.
His skills by foot are top 5 in the Club. All that's keeping him out of the firsts is Fiorini because Clohesy is now first choice wing

Are we expecting Casboult and Day to go around again next year?

Pretty sure both contracts up end of 2024.

VFL depth or bring some young talls in?

We definitely need to stock the cabinet with some VFL talls

Good to see Farrar back. And Johnston.

Our actual midfield depth is very shallow. Thankfully we have depth in the main team (Flanders, Swallow, Humphrey, even Fiorini) that are playing other positions, should injuries occur.

As I’ve been saying, not many players demanding a recall, which is worrying.

Our goalkicking in both teams is also a bit of a worry. Kicking straight makes a big difference.
