After we traded with GWS we had picks 12 and 18.

Pick 12 was Kysaiah Pickett

Strong, aggressive and powerful small forward/midfielder with exciting speed and natural goalsense. Special in the air, particularly one-on-one, and provides good forward pressure inside 50.Already debuted at senior level in the SANFL ad represented South Australia in the 2019 NAB AFLUnder-18 Championships averaging 13.7 averaging, three marks and 2.7 tackles. Nephew of former North Melbourne and Port Adelaide star Byron Pickett.

Pick 18 was Mitch Georgiades

Tall forward who has missed the entire season due to a quad injury but has now made a complete recovery. He showed strong promise as a bottom aged player in 2018, representing his state in all four NAB AFL Under-18 Championship matches averaging 10 disposals and four marks. He also gave a glimpse of his outstanding contested marking ability when playing for team Bartel in the 2018 NAB AFL All-Stars Futures game on Toyota AFL Grand Final day. He is a very competitive player overall who reads the game exceptionally well and uses the ball effectively by hand and foot. He is the son of former Western Bulldogs player John Georgiades, who famously kicked eight goals on debut in 1989 against Carlton.

But 12 and 18 were pushed out to 14 and 20 after bids.

Somehow I'm happy with Hill, Howard and Ryder..

First time in a long time we actually killed the trade period - we totally upgraded the squad.
Hill - A Grade wingman
Jones - speed and big upgrade on Newnes
Howard - Key position player with huge upside
Ryder - ex All Australian ruckman to help development of Marshall
Butler - ex flag winner with Richmond who can kick
Abbott - spare backup ruckman we need

We already have a very young team, so I think bringing in some experienced guys was a great move. Getting quality players wanting to come to us is a very good sign. In terms of the two youngsters you've mentioned, we don't know anything about them at AFL level yet, but we can assume they wouldn't have an impact for a while. Guys like Hill, Jones and Howard are already proven at AFL level.

Over the last few years we have gotten in high draft picks King, Coffield, Clark, Long as well as other sliders that were potentially first rounders in Battle and Bytel. That's a decent crop of potentially quality youth.

I think we did incredibly well in the trade period. The only question mark for me is over the players that we let go and whether we can replace them, however I think guys like Newnes and Acres just weren't that good, Steven was sad to lose but we did the right thing by him, and I feel that Bruce was possibly a cultural move.

Probably not but for some reason I can't seem to agree with what you say. Anyway I think we are desperate to reset rather than rebuild and they have made some massive turn over in on field and off field staff. We would have pretty much been in another rebuild. If we'd lost Stuv and Bruce without it we would have looked pretty much like a full on re start.

We needed fresh blood and a change of culture, starting with our soft on field talismans Steven, Bruce and Newnes, together with Hickey last year. Maybe not fair but honestly I'm glad most of the Crossword Club surfie cruisers have gone. Needed senior winners, specific positional needs, just about every box ticked.

So we missed a few recruits this year, in the context of our list we can afford to skip a few rounds in one year. Ryan Byrnes will make us feel like we did alright in years to come.

You've been playing this tune for years, draft = good, anything else = bad. Look at any successful team, experience and canny acquisition of experience players through free agency and trade (and luck) are vital for success. Brisbane didn't shoot up the ladder this year off the backs of 18 year old kids they got last year, they got Lyons, they got McCarthy, they got Lachie Neale. Prestia, Caddy, Lynch, Nankervis, all started at other clubs before being picked up by this year's premiers.

And let's look at who we actually got and why we got them:
Hill - Speedster, quality wingman, exactly the type of player we've been crying out for for years. Right move.
Ryder - We went from having Holmes, Longer, Pierce and Hickey all competing for the #1 ruck stock to Holmes being forced out, Longer and Pierce retiring due to concussion and Hickey being traded. Our ruck depth was a miracle of a rookie pick and a raw basketball convert. So we brought in a former all Australian who can both coach and chop out. Right move.
Howard - Carlisle fluctuated and was reportedly on the trade table, Brown had one foot out the door, Clavarino and Austin aren't ready to take over and then Howard was suddenly and surprisingly available. The anger of Port fans over this trade says it all. Right move.
Jones - Another speedster for our one paced team. Questionable but we got him cheap.
Butler - Another pressure forward, albeit one coming from a premiership team. Questionable but we got him cheap. What does sting is the pick we traded is what Richmond used to pick up Biggy.

So three clear right moves, two with question marks. But we needed to get some experienced heads in, these players were available and wanted to come to us. The latter is perhaps the most important part, all were courted to varying extents by other clubs and yet all wound up at the Saints. We got every target out of trade period which is a sign to players throughout the competition - if you agree to come to us, we'll make it happen. A reputation like that is definitely the right move.

Yes, the list is stagnate and needed a shake up. Time will tell, but it’s a bold and active move. With most drafts I’d be more for bringing in kids, but this one in particular was a good year. Also draft picks are unknown, with Hill and Jones we know we’re getting some good years of quality footy. With Ryder we know we have an experienced head and someone to help Roma. And with Dougal life after Brown doesn’t seem as dire.

Based on an average draft and a ranking system which gives players a PAV (Player Approximate Value), we get an overall net positive, winning in the short term and losing value in the long term.

The 2019 draft was considered by some to be below average, so probably the right move for the future also.

We're in a different position to most teams topping up to find finals success, we have a new coach that has an opinion on team structure and game plan, we have Satan who has had opinions on the quality of the players we have, a new coach allows a clean out of players that are at either the top end or the bottom end of the list, we've used the opportunity to get players that we need in form and function, all of them would have individual if not club expectations of playing first team, first round.

Importantly, Rider aside, we'd expect to get 4 plus years out of Hill, Butler, Howard and Jones, along with being best 22, Hill, Jones and Butler are bringing premiership experience, along with Roughead, Hanners, Slater, Ratten, Rath and O'Shaugnessy, we've brought in people to drive standards.

At some point in trying to create change we have to accept that change comes with risk, it may not work, it may work sort of and it may work wonderfully, if we think that the results of the last 6 years are not good enough we have to take the chance on something better.

Get to the Rubicon, Alea Jacta Est

Well, the team by the end of 2019 season was going nowhere, and if drastic steps had not been taken, then we would have just occupied the bottom third of the ladder for the immediate future. Introducing new blood is always a good step, and I feel that we may just step up quite a few rungs in 2020

It's not a foregone conclusion that it will be a success like a lot on here like seem to think.

Hill: Slightly lesser player than Steven but longer period left in the game. Tick.

Howard: Upgrade on Brown. Tick.

Ryder: past his best. Be surprised if he is that impactful but could be ok for a year or two.

Jones: Ordinary player. Bit of a chest beater and slaughters the ball. Rather we didn't get him.

Butler: Have about 5 of him already. Now playing in a lot lesser side. Doubtful he makes a major difference.

Who are the 5 ahead of Butler?
