Midfielder Jordan De Goey comes into the side for his first hitout of the year, while Brody Mihocek comes out of the line-up due to illness.

Craig McRae will get a closer look at Nathan Murphy, Finlay Macrae, Jack Madgen, Callum Brown and Darcy Cameron who all played in the reserves against Hawthorn last week.

Vice-captains Taylor Adams (hamstring tightness) and Jeremy Howe (abductor) haven’t made the trip, but remain on track for round one.

If kellly isn’t getting a game with Roughead, dean and checkers out, then what does that say
Says he better hope he already is contracted for next season.

Dean is younger than him and was already inline to play round 1

Cox, Kreuger and Cameron are ahead of him up forward, hardly getting pushed out by gun forwards on that end

Only fair to give Cameron and Krueger first crack alongside Cox.

But yeah non selection in defence is odd…
Sounds like he’s on the outer at the moment. Will need to show plenty in the VFL.

That's why Adams should not be captain. He misses chunks of games every season. Seems he's likely to do it again. We need an on field leader with such a young, inexperienced group.

the fact he hasnt played defence since he was 18?
This is pretty irrelevant and not really true. He played back in 2019 when he was 19 and spent his whole junior career playing there. Got pivoted forward when it was becoming clear we were absolutely devoid of forward options after realising Darcy Moore was a superstar backman.
Kelly has spent two seasons as a makeshift, half-ass forward with virtually no attributes that make you think he can make it as a forward to try and carve an AFL future after acknowledging he was always going to be behind Roughead, Moore and Howe. I suspect we actually put a decent amount of stock in Keane coming on as a KPD too which has thrown a massive spanner in the works.

But now we are left with Kelly, a natural defender, being unable to crack a game as a forward where he's behind Kreuger, Cox, Mihocek and Cameron, meanwhile, at the other end of the ground we were in tatters because a guy playing VFL last year is injured...

That backline looks quite bad defensively hopefully we can score 140 again!

It does look a little thin with Murphy and Madgen. However Himmelberg and Riccardi aren’t monsters so they should be able to compete and help more out.

And if Leppa is the master defensive coach he’s been proclaimed to be then maybe he can get the best out of these two.

Not much given they only just switched him to defence in the last 7 days.
