For all the flak that our fitness team are taking for the never ending injuries, lets not forget to also give them credit for the fact that the team looks slow across the turf generally and has blown up physically half way through the third quarter in each of the last 3 games.

Let's not cherry pick after this game, generally we have outwork the opposition

Better off nailing the fitness department for injuries

Did we? Freo game maybe. We got Brisbane early in the 3rd quarter. Wasn't really a fitness thing as we only clung on in the 4th.

Collingwood, Melbourne, Adelaide got us late.

You are now shifting parameters, is it fitness or curbing momentum you want to highlight

not this time. too many cracks in this team now
We were putrid tonight

Why are we so bad at tackling? Gym not on Russell's menu?
The players are strong enough. It's technique and application which is more on the coaching than the strength and conditioning. Possibly mental application and intent as well. It's also a bit due to our slow nature, it's hard to bring someone to ground when they are hitting the contest at pace and we are flat footed.

Hawks never had an issue with being slow or missing tackles.

There are two camps on the Russell topic…

We continue to have the worst injury list year on year, so clearly there’s an issue somewhere…

I’ve got no idea on the complexities of injuries, is Russell really to blame?

All I can see is he’s had 6 years on big coin and we haven’t improved in this area…

Would we be better off with a new approach and use the money on better assistant coaches…

The game was quite different back then, it was more contested and less free flowing. Suited the bigger bodies. It's definitely fair to ask questions about the injury toll and where blame should be placed as all good organizations need to ask tough questions to improve. But it's a huge stretch to say our tackling is poor due to the S&C department. It's mostly a lack of intent and pace for mine. Most of the broken tackles were when they had speed up and changed angles.

It is fitness.

Those four matches include one where we had a small lead, one where we had a small deficit, one that was 50/50 and one where we got belted. Okly the Melbounre game was really about momentum - Collingwood and Geelong ebbed and flowed, but in every case we looked visibly fatigued earlier than our opponents and got outplayed in the last quarter.

Along with many other problems, we are not running out games well. And in the past - even early this year, we were.

Whatever the fitness tram have done misfired badly this year imo. Hopefully it is just the shortened preseason that has thrown things and they can turn it around

I feel you are still basing it on results of win/loss, rather than fitness numbers

We consciously made the decision to extend our preseason and up the intensity from as early as Jan. Our guys have been going at full tilt since then and that is what we see playing out on the ground now. The players look worn out and are breaking down.

Anyone involved in that decision-making around the 2024 preseason (including Voss) needs to be severely reprimanded or outright fired and future decision-making around the structure of preseason needs to be taken out of their hands.

Voss (who seems to be one of the main drivers of this ultra-intense preseason) simply should not be involved. It should be the fitness staff and the directive to them from the Footy Director should be that we want everyone fit round 1 as a priority - if we need to build our fitness base slightly from there that's fine. As long as we're not breaking them physically we'll take the downside.

This is not me being a revisionist with the benefit of hindsight - I said all of this at the time.

We should look at all fitness gurus across the league and replace Russell with someone who has a good track record of getting his whole list through to round 1 and beyond.

We looked super tired today. More the run of hard games than poor high performance.

The thing is, its going to be hard the next 4/5 as well.

Is this something other clubs have trialled in the past - to leave their heavy preseason training too close to start of season?

If so why would we do such a thing - what was the benefit they expected to gain?

My understanding of a preseason is that they do weights/strength first up and then lead into lots of long distance running and then power running/training and then ease up when practice games/season starts.

Not sure if I agree with that, but we know that AR thought so when he arrived at the club. He spent a fair chunk of his time working on the players mindset and was told to focus purely on the physical side of high performance.

This was reported on in the media at the time.

The plan was devised with the whole season in mind - not just the first few rounds.
Unfortunately it seems to have created a physical stress level that some players have failed to cope with.
The injuries are hurting our chances to win games right now and any fitness benefit that might have been derived later in the season from this different approach to tapering has also been compromised.
