There’s been a lot written on here about how well Tom Mitchell is going at training but not so much about Dan McStay. Does anyone have much feedback on him so far?
Doing well. Things we expect of him. Taking nice marks up the line, or in F50. Has quick and nice hands when in a handballing chain. Moves strongly as well, not slow at all. Has kicked a few goals.
Definitely being a help to mihocek in that providing help, a strong forward who can take a lot of heat can only help mihocek's load he has been forced to take upon himself.

I think he'll be a mainstay in our team this year. So lets see. Im happy to defer to the coaches on this one

My point is I think AJ is suffering from disproportionate criticism. I think its a result of (a) handwringing about his summer time trial, (b) recency bias (ie last game played), and (c) a bias to blame forwards for ball movement downfield.

To my eyes the guy has elite traits , has proven to work hard, and for a short time in the system has really come on about as quickly and well as you can expect.

I also think its noteworthy that his goals per game is very comparable with Ginnivan.
Fair enough, he definitely has some scintillating attributes. He’ll have to bring a more hardened resolve if it’s too be of any value in finals though.

As I said steep learning curve and let’s hope he has learnt.

I think that’s unlikely. Beau’s defensive pressure is incredibly valuable to the 22, he’s the kind of player who makes oppo defenders look over their shoulder and think twice about grabbing the ball while in his vicinity.
McReery’s is valuable but I think Hill’s crumbing will be moreso and he has a more well rounded game as well.

He's a battering ram. Hardnut with speed. Best 22 for sure for me.
Interesting to see if he makes it eventually in the midfield 🤔
Why not.

Bianconeri is talking about Bobby Hill coming in and slotting into a small forward role for this season , then building his tank and strength for mid/wing role next season , and I replied who goes out
Hill is depth at this point. As is usual every season with injuries he will get his chance. I can't remember the last time we had good depth on our list.

I don’t think someone we’ve chased for 2 years who provides a clear need is going to be depth
All good mate and we shall see.
McReery definitely playing round 1 barring injury. I'm excited by Hill as well. Who goes out for him? Can't see it happening early in the year.

As Bianconeri correctly pointed out , we have chased Hill for 2 years , but for mine , McCreery and Ginnivan get first dibs at it , it’s up to Hill to show his output will usurp that of the incumbents.

Hill would be good on the wing or half back flank as well I think.
A good mark and very fast.
The Fly will have all possibilities in mind.
Team balance.

The best teams in Premier league have superstars sitting it out on the bench.
Once they have an injury it's up to these bench warmers to show what they can do. Makes everyone hungry for a spot.

McReery was dropped for Tyler brown last season I don’t think he’s the walk up start everyone believes he is. I hope he starts in the VFL works on his midfield game and pushes into the side through the midfield rotation.

Atm Hill is training strong in the pre season whilst McReery has been doing mostly limited work as well.

Agree to disagree. As it stands I’d say that they’ll co-exist though, with WHE making way via a transition to defence judging by training.

We actively pursued him for 2 years and paid a relatively high price in a trade. Barring injury he’ll play round one, all those types of recruits always do.

Strong and reliable. Has not taken a backwards step, and appears to be quite aggressively asserting himself as a starting 22 player. Nicely coordinated for a big man.. one grab marks, fluent kicking action, covers ground well.
Fierce competitor, visibly frustrated if Mihocek or Frampton beat him in a marking contest etc. Mihocek surprises plenty with his smarts and underrated agility though.

Looks 100% committed to the cause, despite his lions playing style looking a bit laconic to me.

Not exactly dominating though, so hoping he keeps progressing as he learns the game style. Whilst I am convinced the club still has an eye on a king twin, with Brodie going past 30 this year…

Cheers for your response mate. Who makes way for him say in round 1?
No doubting he will be a good player.
As I said previously, seems like WHE is making room in the forward line by moving to defence.

Likely to have 8 or so playing forward in any given week

Mainstays in Mihocek, McStay, Elliot, Ginnivan… then a combination of McReery, De Goey, Hill, Sidebottom, etc rotating in and out

and if they persist in playing two rucks… then a ruck in Cox/Cameron at some point will rest forward too…

if they play the one ruck… then Johnson likely a permanent forward and have mcStay pinch hitting up front

The point is the 6 forwards named on the team sheet is not set in concrete…

Room for Hill and McReery and others

I think that is where WHE's switch to half back in practice matches come into play.
Hill into the forward line for him.
Definitely the way that things have been structured in match sim at training, albeit McCreery has not been participating in that level of contested work as yet.
