His preseason has been exceptional so I definitely think we will start that way at very least. And maybe they prefer the 2 ruck combo in general. Especially since both are battlers and not Grundy type dominant, so two works.

I hope you are right, Jen. It should be his position to lose given his outstanding form last year.

I feel like a caged animal tbh, sometimes sucking my enjoyment out of it.
Definitely caught between a rock and a hard place , on the one hand you are sharing your passion with all your reports and videos with the Pies faithful, Great stuff , then Coach says we wanna lay low from prying eyes , go with your gut feel on this , no right or wrong , just the world of professional sport .

Thanks for the review Jen. Just a warning though.
‘I’m taking names of those writing off Johnson already.
You’re on the list Jen. ;)
It’s hard to impress in match sim when not playing.
I think Johnson, McStay & Mihocek can work fine with Elliott, Hill & Ginnivan along side them.
‘if playing 2 rucks, then rotations with a tall forward & the bench is normal.
‘Johnson is very good on the lead. Has good hands & can kick goals from ridiculous angles.

As an unabashed Johnson fan. I’m coming for you all in the coming months.
Finals.... pressure.......
Not good

I reckon I'm gonna cut down on my footage to an extent and mainly post reports.
Links to the top our Jen - that said, Pies don’t need to advertise anything!

Ha I got sent this today But they been wanting to tell you for ages but they to nice being new at the club. That’s a kind hint to not record every week or kids linked to Collingwood in tac cup specially if your team is contending to win a flag isn’t smart if you put your self in the coaches and list managers shoes when wanting to win or get kids cheap through the draft. Less is more they say Jen as you could have a few weeks break before the season starts so other teams can’t read everything Collingwood is planning to do. ✌️🙏

happened to be passing vic park per chance and stopped to watch a bit

a few impressions:

- for those who say Frampton is unproven and may not be a certain starter, I can say he is definitely our full back this year. He's a head taller than murphy and howe, they aren't even in the same category. They would be lucky to match his reach even when they jump and he is on the ground. He can play football, so realistically there is no one else on our list who is going to play that role.

- De Goey is impossible to tackle. In the fend-off drill adams couldnt get his arms around him. Its one thing to be a great honest player like adams, but in competitive sport its another thing to have elite traits that allow you to be better than anyone else. At the end of the day, you win premierships when you have some unstoppable players like this perform when it matters.

- Mcstay is clunking everything and makes the space move around him like a a proper big man. We did very well to get him, will be a structural piece of our game. I dont know what brisbane were using him for, but he will have a high impact on our team

- WE have a lot of depth. So many guys that could come up and play a role at AFL standard.
Those are some pretty exciting take aways. McStay potentially played out of position with the wealth of talls they have in Brisbane.

Yep, similar thoughts. Caught the match sim and the first thing that has been affirmed for me is… get ready for the Nick and jordy show this year. Nick was silk, slotted a nice long range goal, JDG is just pure brute force. Still a loose cannon and looks like he could blow at any stage, but he’s invested and all impact. Nick made me laugh.. was told to have a rest and directed a winded Murley to go off instead.

The other combinations to look for are McStay and Brodie. Big Mac played v well and dominated his opponents, whilst Brodie created and got on the end of a few goals in 2 quarters. Impressive. A minor indictment on our recruiting and list managers of the past ten years that we’ve finally got a nice tall attacking combination. Just a head shaker that it’s come from a VFL backman, and a free agent trade. Stay fit and they will cause headaches this year.

Down back and the Billy / Darcy combo should also bear some tasty, ripened fruit. Darcy still on sidelines building his agility, movement and tank, though still seems a bit off. I don’t expect any practice match action at all. Billy not perfect, but imposing and solid.

Arlo was also good in the middle. Looks to have earned the right, with Carmy a shock omission on the sidelines. In the stands with Krueger and Dean, so here’s hoping it isn’t much.

Mitchell was racking up some touches, reminding that his work around the ground and experience to be in the right position in link up play is another major string to his bow. Most have focussed on his centre work to date, and how that will benefit the pies midfield.

Lipinski was also solid, again showing a cool and experienced head.

Howe was good down back, looking like he hasn’t lost much.

Maynard had a shocker, two shitty kicks to turnover, then a 50m penalty to gift a goal, to……

The smoky. Tom Wilson I thought was good, with v nice disposal, and the ability to get forward and score. 2 goals by my calcs. Adds flexibility, needs to be a bit more physical / intense, and he could land a few games.

Josh D also good, as you’d expect. If everyone could kick under pressure like him, we’d be a shoe-in. Facing 3 options from the wing with defenders approaching, he was able to split the defenders with a 45m pass, straight to McCreery - I think - who goaled.

McCreery - also good… big bodied running forward who can kick a goal from long range, and find space with his pace. Like. Not to mention his defensive pressure. Best 22 for me, and scope for more upside as still partially on the mend.

Hill - did his bit, got free then marked with incoming pressure, to hand Brodie an easy goal. Ginni with the assist to Hill, after again getting free and delivering beautifully. Dangerous.

Allen - did well, got involved, but imo is still lacking that extra split second re decision making or quickness to dispose etc, which is always the case with first year players imo. Eg caught while running into goal, causing a shank. Better for the run and has all the tools, just not fully ready yet.

Rucks - an area of concern, with Darcy C running sideline drills. Cox not imposing, with Begg actually standing out a bit more. Still lumbering for me and v much a VFL player at this stage, so we are v reliant on Darcy. Oscar hardly sighted and coughed it up on wing, with clear options, so he is v much a work in progress for me.

Floreat pica
We divested out of the ruck, and invested in Mitchell so I’m not fussed. The rest sounds very pleasing indeed.

Mihocek has been our go to forward for a few years now and has been banged up at times because he is undersized for the role he's been playing.
He's been great, but I think McStay will take pressure off him & they'll both benefit.
If they both kick 40+ goals this season, it will be a big plus for our scoring power.
McStay will also bring players like Ginni, McCreery, Hill & Elliott into the game.
Yes thoughtful post, McStay brings more than just the goals and marks he shifts opposition focus from "lesser lights" and that in turn allows them to shine a bit more.

Hey Jen. Take Fly’s comment as a compliment. You’ve done a fantastic job and should be on the club payroll.

I hope you still post footage.

Agree she’s done a fantastic job, probably too good tbh.
I’ve long been in the camp of ”no footage” as it just makes the oppositions’ job that much easier.

Would selecting Frampton in AFL Fantasy be a dumb move? Based on match simulation (for those who saw it), is he one to be putting up numbers or instead role playing? What's Titch looking like?
Billy will still rack up some touches. Don’t know his price, but is an interceptor by trade, and likes to kick the ball. Also think he will start and FB is his to lose.

Mitchell will mainly handball, and is competing with circa 6 - 8 other established mid types for touches. Reckon Fly likes this this spread of involvement. Plus Nick will be getting 40 a game, so not sure how much that leaves for others..

Honestly don’t think your footage gives away too much Jen, with isolated passages etc. It’s more the full ground player movement that opposition coaches would be interested in. Ie Melbourne had their recruiters and scouts there last week watching from their hill. Another reason why Vic park would’ve been selected.

And if you do decide to pull back, you’ve more than done your job this PS, with great vision of player fitness, whos featuring etc.

I actually thought the balance at Vic Park was great. No media, no opposition spies. Just a handful of pies supporters and dog walkers watching on. Reckon they’d be pretty chuffed with that

Yeah I’ve tried to be mindful of what I do share lately. As for the vic park session I didn’t share any footage to the public just for my own collection. I mostly just watched with some friends.

I reckon going forward preseason I should limit the footage and do write up’s. but during the season footage won’t matter too much. It’ll help my phone battery

The fact that the VP session wasn't publicised suggests the team was working on stuff they didn't particularly want opposition scouts to see in detail.
It's a shame we don't have somewhere we can have closed training sessions like Geelong at KP.

I don't wanna put a dampener on the mood (or maybe I do? I dunno) but McStay is yet to play a game for us. Those talking about him being so good and strong and such a presence...maybe wait until after he has played one good game for us first?

Who knows, maybe he will turn into a true number 1 key forward. I guess stranger things have happened....or maybe no, maybe this would be the strangest.

That’s just the way things are in this day and age. Most grounds are open. Clubs just have to accept it.
VP is also an open park so couldn’t have stopped people passing by. I happen to live across the road

I recall they did a match sim there last year and people turned up. It happens. Especially in the morning people just stumble by.

He just has to take the number 1 defender and provide a contest. Checkers will then get the 2nd defender and should thrive. McStay can clunk a few and has kicked a few 3-4 goal bags. Hes a structure player that we've been craving big time

I prefer the writeups anyway, it's much easier to get a sense of who is doing well, what and where.

Opposition can't piggyback off your reports to much either because presumably they shouldn't be putting too much weight to a fans training reports.

Reports are very subjective whereas videos are objective.

I think 1 or 2 videos to accompany your report is sufficient, perhaps a good mark & goal or some such highlight.

I don’t. Just makes oppo scout work that much easier. Reports are more than enough.

This will make Cox/Cameron more dangerous too when playing forward. Both competent contested marks and good kicks, they have never really played in a team with two legitimate key forwards. Opposition will find Cox especially difficult to double team with mcstay now at the club . That leaves the mobile Mihocek playing all over the forward line… one minute up high on the flanks linking up or marking on the lead, next minute in the goal square toe poking goals …which seems to be a specialty of his with his thunder thighs holding his opponents at bay.
