Levi is in a difficult position where he's a great footballer but clearly his strengths, like Will, is as an inside midfielder. Don't really know what we do with him though because McCluggage, Neale, Dunkley and W.Ashcroft are well above him. Probably good to get games into him regardless.

He's getting invaluable development right now. Such a luxury having him drift around stoppages while learning to ply his trade at the HFF and wing.

May the security gods have let through the gates without too much probing.
Was feeling a bit crook n tossing up to go to the G or not. Son n grandkids there so I went. Got off train at Jolimont n the queue to get in was all the way back to the station omggggg so I went home. Reads like I didn't miss much.

Though i thought Bailey was lucky to get paid a mark in front of the sticks after the mid air hack from Will Ashcroft, i would need to see a tape measure be convinced that had gone 15😃.

Overall I thought we did ok from the Umps, the tigers youthful enthusiasm caught them out in a few places and kicks were paid.
Bailey is back to his very best form after a bit of an up and down year last year. He is such a damaging offensive player. I think we have moved past the idea of playing him in midfield rotations, because his defensive game and tackling aren’t really his strengths. This means he is freed up to do what he does best, which is to tear it up inside 50 around goals and in transition from the wing to half forward. He is a very hard player to match up on. Super happy to have Bailey in the team.

PS. Jasper Fletcher is our biggest improver. What a great story and such a long term prospect. Having a fantastic season.

Agreed, he is also one of our most reliable set shots and has a good footy brain.. He reminds me very much of Craig McRae

4-0. No injuries.
Doedee and Gardiner back in 2s.
Coleman back in few weeks.

Bailey doing a good job covering for Lohmann and getting us those goals. Midfielders kicking their fair share helps too, easing the workload on our forward line minus Daniher.

We're going ok, just quietly. The most pleasing thing is we're winning based on a system and game plan rather than someone kicking 5-6 goals every week. It's far more sustainable come finals time.
Fagan hinting Doedee would come into the side at some stage. Sounded to me sooner rather than later.

If Starc is back, and a little further along Kiddy, who is he replacing?

Was watching the game on Kayo and couldn't stop laughing when the TV cameras captured a pair of silly kids steal the ball after a goal in the 4th quarter.

Despite being a Richmond supporter, the Lions took some great marks and kicked some nice goals.

Hmm.

When Starc comes back Fletcher goes to the wing, Bruce is the sub and McLachlan is out. Lohmann coming back will push Bruce out and someone (?) to sub.

If Doedee came in then maybe Answerth? I would like to see a more in form Doedee in the reserves before they do that but they might be seeing things in training we are not. He can play on the second small forward though like some third talls do sometimes.

dropping answerth would be a massive mistake imo.

has started the season very well

A second half performance like that would have pissed me right off a couple of years ago. But let’s face it, Fagan and co know exactly what they are doing.. We lift when we need to.

A softer game or two will do us the world of good after the amount of damage the West Coast sauna did to the group.

They train in heat all pre-season.
We really can’t be using heat as any sort of excuse.

Went further than the kick Dangerfield marked to goal against us

I did the same as I live in Docklands so I don’t miss anything

Pretty sure we don't do full matches at midday. :(

With Joe no longer in the side, how has our 3 KPP's gone to date.

He actually kind of did - 42 disposals for ~100 metre gained. Ashcroft had 24 but gained 475 metres!
Yeah it's amazing to look at our top disposal winners and their kick vs handball ratios yesterday:

Neale 15 kicks 27 handballs (0.56)
Dunkley 9K 21H (0.43)
McCluggage 12K 14H (0.86)
Rayner 9K 13H (0.69)

Yesterday we totalled 214 v 162 which overall is 1.32, which is not far off normal for a lot of teams but a long long way below the 2-1 we normally go at.

Interestingly if you take those 4 guys out of the equation, that leaves 169 v 87 which is 1.94 and far closer to our norm. Seeing as these guys spent a lot of time in our midfield yesterday, this is probably partly a reflection of Richmond's pressure. But it's probably also a reflection of the fact we tried to be a bit too perfect at times, and maybe a little bit too Hollywood, as happened against West Coast.

I'm yet to watch any of the replay but I wonder if we need to look at a bit more driving the legs out of congestion, to come out the front instead of handballing backwards to a receiver on the defensive side of that congestion. This would reduce the likelihood of us having that "one handball too many" we were at times guilty of yesterday. It also means that in the event of a skill error we are in a better position to defend a turnover.

That’s interesting. I didn’t think he usually spent that much time on the bench. Maybe I just noticed it more yesterday when I saw him running off a couple of times looking very slow and sore.
He played worse and worse as the game went on. I was in the top tier so hard for me to read into his body language or anything more detailed like his health etc.

It started out as a bit of a joke but by the end of the game I felt a bit sorry for him. A bit like the bowler who has to bowl his 10 overs because you've only picked 5 bowlers but he's getting spanked to all parts of the ground. The harder he tried the worse things seemed to get for him. Looked as if his confidence was shot to bits by the end.

Hopefully he can have a bit of a sit down on the leather couch during the week and be back to the Harris we know and love next Saturday.

Was at the Game...never looked like losing, played good footy for 3 qtrs. Yes we definitely put the cue in the rack, which was slightly disappointing. But think the tough conditions the last month played a little part in that. The one thing I think is concerning was the 5 goals they got in RED time. 4 - 0 baby go you good things..MIGHTY LIONS.
I liked how Fages referenced this in his press conference. I didn't even realise the club tracked and made such a big deal out of red time scores etc. So that was enlightening.

All in all it was pretty well balanced from Fages. Good humoured while still expressing disappointment in the fade outs both in each quarter and in the game overall.

Certainly no sweeping things under the carpet which we've seen a bit of in the past at times.

Fagan post-match, R4: 'We can certainly play a lot better than that'

Actually being at the ground it was bewildering to see the umpires completely stuff up the 15 metre calls. There were two kicks in front of us that were at least 20 metres long that were called not 15, one of them by Zorko from memory, and then two Richmond kicks of about 10 metres were awarded marks. The inconsistency is unbelievable. None of the players seem to have any idea what the umpires are going to call, so in a lot of cases they play on just in case which results in rushed disposals and turnovers. Surely it can’t be that hard to show some consistency.
Players are now definitely playing on simply out of fear that they will get called to play on, incorrectly.

The umpiring department has completely overthought this and added yet another layer of subjectivity to umpiring. Like there wasn't enough already.

We need those chips in the ball, and we need them to actually work properly, yesterday or sooner.

Very spoilt brattish feel in here. We won- very easily. We got 50 points up and yes they kicked 4 goals at the end. Who gives a shit?? People posting can’t find 5 players to give votes- really?? I could find 10 worth a vote. Richmond have experienced midfielders and a great ruck, we slaughtered them out of the middle. Tough crowd and those saying they didn’t miss much by not going, I disagree, was as some brilliant play, Ashy’s goal, a clearance clinic and watching Levi’s smarts this early was brilliant.

I posted this in the game day thread in real time but there was hardly anybody queueing at Gate 6.

I guess everyone was coming from the north side so like sheep just followed everyone else and joined the queue at gate 2. This was an hour before the bounce, so I went for a bit of a walk around the ground and voila they weren't all the same.

Something to think about for next time 🙂
