But some of the calls were hopeless. Blatant push in the backs that were called play-ons. Even that debacle where Big O bumped Harley Reid and another player got a 50 because the lions thought the free was back there. Just felt as if Umps were keeping WC in the game.
I cant stand the inconsistencies with hands in the back. Just change the rule, no hands (forearm, shoulder etc is fine). The opponent attempting to play assertive and taking front position wont be disadvantaged. It also would very likely stop the pushing in the back which has been talked about lately, due to some head injuries.

couldnt have said it better myself. So inconsistent with the 15m rule aswell. Need to also teach the umps how to bounce the ball in the centre. Way to many recalls. Counted about 10 myself.

No doubt a hard game to adjudicate at the elite level, but outlawing the hands in the back would be a good start. And yes, there appeared a higher than usual number of poor centre bounces yesterday.

I really thought Reville would have had the bit between his teeth getting a shot this week but then proceeded to be almost Prior-like in his invisibility. Really disappointing, I imagine this game might push him down the pecking order.

Hard for someone like reville when we were getting trounced in the contest

It is easy to dismiss Cals goals as easy out the back if all he does is hang out deep and wait for opportunities. But he is also very big defensively and gets around the field.

His OTB goals come from hard work and being able to read the play well enough to break away from his defender.

He is a very smart player.
The other thing I would say for Cal, (and hopefully we see it again soon) is he fits well with Charlie in the side. Cal is a great pressure forward, and a great, strong straight runner. Charlie is a more elusive type with genuine speed but also elusive quickness. Having both of those options in our small forwards, keeps defenses honest.

I get all that but the first shot was pretty much a soda. I guess playing his first game for the club ,given his role , he was probably a bit nervous and just wanted to do the right thing.
No soda that first shot.
Getable but 50-50 at best.

Lester is playing well, much better than I thought, and that is a credit to him. But Andrews and Payne are the Dynamic Duo, as Lester cannot mark the oppositions best KPF (R.1 ((2024))against Freo). He also struggles against mobile forwards (see Heeney' late goal last week). When Starc is playing, Ryan is often matched up on the 4th or 5th most dangerous forward and that allows him some freedom and his intercepting and offensive play has improved, and he is playing his role really well.

After 3 ACL's, Lions will be cautious with Doedee, and currently Lester is playing well, and deserves to keep his spot.
Lester killed Jeremy Cameron in the Preliminary Final and he gets him every game. He’ll play on him this week too. The idea that Lester only gets the 4th or 5th best defender is an old canard that used to get trotted out by those who could see he was playing well, early in his late career revival, but didn’t really want to give Lester the credit he deserved. Not in the least bit surprised to see your post liked by NB.

Would you suggest Cameron is Geelong’s fourth or fifth best forward? Lester will pick him up again this week and I suggest he’ll beat him again.

I note the bolded bit at the end of your post On the quiet and realise you are not having a go at Lester. I just don’t know what more he needs to do. He is miles ahead of Payne, no disrespect to Payne, because I thought he’s been good this year. Zoning off beautifully when we have this ball inside 50.

7 of us flew up for the game and returned on the last flight out last night back to Melbourne. Blimey teddy that was worse than a sauna sitting at the ground yesterday. For the locals is that what it is like normally re the humidity. I gather the rain in the morning didn't help but geez the humidity was disgusting yesterday.

A little unusual at this time of the year but not unheard of

Not unexpected at all - just a mind boggling decision by the AFL to schedule a midday match in April in Queensland - it was dangerous for players to be forced to play at that time in that heat and humidity. It once again illustrates just how out of touch the AFL are with clubland and their understanding of Queensland. I would assume the Club would be making that point to the AFL behind closed doors.

Cameron basically played on the wing against the Saints. Can Froggy go with him?It was smalls and Neale and Dempsey in the forward line, with cameos from Cameron.Geelong certainly changing it up and could well have pinched the victory.

It is still March in north Queensland.

I've come around totally on Lester 3KZ

He's a gun. The knockers have been knocking him for so long on reasons that just aren't happening any more. Whatever his perceived deficiencies might be he makes up for with total commitment and effort. Never gives up , seems to direct traffic down there , and occasionally does something brilliant. Rarely coughs it up , hardly ever. We've got a great player there and people want to go for a pie in the sky option. I can see him playing this level for a couple more years because he's resilient , he's not the Lester of 2 or 3 years ago.

Re the umps I'm the first one out of my chair when they give a howler but they must have their heads done in by the AFL's constant reinterpretation of the rules. I wouldn't want to be umpiring an AFL game. It's difficult to play and harder still to umpire.

They might try to hide Cameron on the wing to get him away from Froggie.

Geelong played Cameron up the ground to try and stem the bleeding as St.Kilda were transitioning basically the length of the ground out of Geelong’s forward 50. He was floating around deep in defence at some stages.

Some surprising votes IMO

Brisbane v West Coast
9 Harris Andrews (BL)
9 Lachie Neale (BL)
3 Dayne Zorko (BL)
3 Ryan Lester (BL)
2 Liam Ryan (WCE)
2 Josh Dunkley (BL)
1 Hugh McCluggage (BL)
1 Tim Kelly (WCE)
A bit surprising.

Neale was BOG imo for a consistent 4 quarter effort. Harris had a great second half on pygmies.

Ah Chee changed the momentum of the game when we were still struggling to put anything on the scoreboard and we may not have won without him.

I thought he was more important than the others . Zorko I must say really tried to make something happen when we were playing appallingly. We still need him don't we.

Just watched the highlights and the Eagles' players kicked a lot of goals really highly skilled and perhaps a bit lucky. It came back to mean and we improved. Quite a few Eagles had good games, but many dropped away. Also, McGovern just ignores the stand rule LOL.

Expected score largely bears that out 👇

Was disappointed when Day passed off the ball. Great that will got his goal, but the pass was shoddy and that shot should have been within the wheelhouse of an experienced forward.

I think if it had been anyone but McLachlan in that position, Day would have taken the shot. But he wanted to bring the youngster into the game. In the end his execution was terrible but his heart was in the right place and I loved the intent. And young Will did a great job to show the necessary composure to finish the goal.

The fact of the matter is that an excessive number of rules in this sport are subjective and basically requires umpires to be able to read minds.

If we can remove this subjectivity from the rules, umpiring will become easier and it will become more appealing as a vocation.
