Politics isn't football, it's not like the liberals need to hit the draft and train a new crop of elite MPs. There's no reason they couldn't win in four years time, the question is how much they're willing to learn from this wipeout and the impending federal one next year.
There will always be white collar assholes like myself who want a pro-business party to put more bacon on their tables. And a lot more of us white collar assholes would have voted liberal in this election, if the liberals weren't also packages with 1950's social conservatism.
That's the existential crisis they find themselves in. Are they a party of socially conservative wowsers? Or is their raison d'etre the liberalisation of the economy? If it's the message itself that is on the nose, their core principles, then what can they actually do to win back an electorate that has passed them by? To have any chance of forming government (in Victoria at least) in the near future they need to expunge the party of these religious conservatives and reinvent the party because at the moment they really are seen as a bunch of "homophobic, anti-women, climate-change deniers" which is going to appeal to a smaller and smaller portion of the electorate as newer generations are added to the electoral roll.
