Another article that doesn't need to be given air time.

Remember, the club has likely put Oscar in this position, not the other way around.

Could he have left discussions to his management until seasons end? Sure. Does he need to step down as captain because Victorian media demands it? No.
How can his teammates look him in the eye and listen to what he says on the field now? If your in a war, and your leader is running away from the enemy, what kind of message does that send to his army?

Its an effect on the playing group more than any. John Worsfold literally put his heart on his sleeve by his actions every game he captained West Coast.

And if Mitchell wants to have these discussions with Oscar Allen, why not do it through say a Zoom Meeting or a telephone call? The optics are terrible. And I tell you one thing, its more likely to lose the trust of the Eagles fans.

They're all dealing with the same thing, just to different magnitudes and at different times. Inside club land will be a very different space to Big Footy or Facebook.

Do you seriously think they are sitting in a cafe openly talking about possible contracts?

No, that happens in private, and will be happening with ever player that another club might be interested in, whether in contract or out of contract.

Disrespect is the same nonetheless. Cheating in public and cheating in private is still grounds for divorce so let’s divorce I say

I wouldn't be paying the guy $60,000k+ and a packet of chips let alone the figures Im hearing quoted around.

Imagine paying a guy $800,000 a season and he has picked up 20 disposals in 3 games.

Damien Barrett is calling the Eagles to take the captaincy away from Oscar Allen effectively immediately. What Oscars act did, was disenfranchise a club, its members who pay good money during the Eagles demise.....

I agree with Barrett here

While Barrett is a Snap-on tool set, he's got a point.

For those who follow the club/league closely, we know such meetings would take place throughout the year, but it is still jarring all the same and not a good look for the captain of the club. Could have easily had a zoom/online meeting and had a face to face catch up during his time off (the mid season bye).

Quite poor tbh and the emotive reaction would be to take the captaincy off him, Liam can handle the job on his own just fine, but I doubt the club will do anything.

As long as we are in line for adequate compensation, then I look forward to his (Oscar’s) annual ailment/injury list to become too much before he is shut down for the year. Then it will be time for goodbye and good luck x
:)
There is a time and place to have these meetings. Couldn't have occurred say in a bye week for the Eagles? or maybe when the Eagles were in Melbourne next? Sam Mitchell was a bit of a grub of a player despite winning premierships with the Hawks- so he very much knows what he was doing over in the West. Its a horror look after the Western Derby mauling.

As an Eagle fan, going ahead, you don't want Sam Mitchell coming anywhere near Eagles players during a holiday trip again.

The guys form put him in this position I feel. I think the clubs smart enough to know the difference between Oscar and Jack Williams is minimal at best so why give him the money he wants

Strange take.
The club has put Oscar in this position how?

They are negotiating a contract with him and he is the captain of our club.
The clubs expectations of him are 100 percent commitment to the club and not expecting him to meet with rival coaches to discuss his future.

Especially not when it can be seen by the world. Mobile phones would suffice in private or with his contract manager at least.

He should be removed from the co-captaincy as he is not loyal to the club.

And based on performance he should be dropped this week.

His body language shows he's either struggling with injury badly or not interested, either way we can't afford to carry him.

Not saying the Harley thing is true ( I honestly think it’s media bs) but we definitely would have the capital as the afl is allowing clubs to trade 3 years into the future. On top of that if we signed Allen I wouldn’t be shocked to see Mitch Lewis on the trade table which would generate another late 1st allowing us to trade potentially 4 first rounders.
You have three first round picks, most probably in the high teens that will also disappear once Tasmania come in. What sort of capital is that? You’re asking compare Rand to the Dollar

Barrett on the money... It's just all very clumsy and a very bad look considering how he has played. He could have easily just met Mitchell in Gather Round next week and no one would have blinked. Instead he has caused another massive, unhelpful distraction. Leadership sometimes involves owning your mistakes and stepping back for a bit, or at least offering to.

I can't agree.
OA has lost all credibility as captain IMO.

I doubt it's just Vic media.

Not sure how the club has put him in any position TBH.
They're still negotiating contracts.

Allen stepping away from the captaincy should be a given if he isn't signing the contract the Eagles have in front of him in a matter of days, just not a great look for him or the club.

Probably could also do without the hassle of captaincy to try and find some form.

He met with his former coach and friend.

You can't stop that, and they wouldn't have been sitting at a cafe having a coffee talking contracts, that would happen regardless of meeting in person all through his manager.
Whilst I agree with your points here. Could have easily been a chat: about life, about family, about him getting married (saw an Insta post of him proposing witht the ring to his partner) etc. But no doubt blind Freddy can see questions, Mitchell could have brought up , such as: where he wants to be in his next phase of life, what his plans are for end of season (holidays), wedding plans etc etc and the big one.........footballing future and what he wants out of footy.

When you travel across the country (4 hours) to meet someone of importance, there has to be a good reason for it. I guess thats one of the things Melbourne clubs and East Coast clubs have a bit of an advantage, you can afford to meet and mix key people under a bit of disguise - as people don't really care (even celebrities/sportsperople) what you do in your own time. Anything or anyone that crosses 4 hours to WA , has to come for a good reason and there is a bit more attention to it.

Thinking about it deeply, Sam Mitchell has done nothing wrong from his side. But yeah Its Oscars actions have left a bit of a sour taste for alot of people.

I understand why the club might hesitate to take the captaincy off him. They don't want to infame things further. But Allen should have the decency of resigning the captaincy himself. And it should be fairly obvious even to Allen that Baker is far better suited to the role than he is. And Mitchell should have had the decency to meet Allen in private and not humiliate the club and put Allen in this position.

Every article from Victoria that mentions Reid just assumes that two first rounders, no matter where they are in the first round, would be enough to get a deal done for Reid. Like we would just hand him over for picks 14 and 16.

I thought Allen was out of contract this year but it is actually next year. So there is a whole 18 months to go before he is a free agent. Why would the club resign him now when there is that much time left and they can wait and see how he goes with staying on the park? It is not in the clubs interests at all to resign him on a long term deal right now.

And why is Mitchell bothering to come over here and meet him 18 months before any movement is possible. They don't have the draft capital to get anything done this year. And i think their idea is to get him as a free agent and not have to hand over any draft capital anyway. They are wayyyy jumping the gun.

We live in a society nowadays where every action almost gets close attention off-field. I dont know if it was possible for Mitchell to meet Allen in a 'private place'.

I do agree Gather Round might have been the best time and place as a few have mentioned on here.
