Another article that doesn't need to be given air time.

Remember, the club has likely put Oscar in this position, not the other way around.

Could he have left discussions to his management until seasons end? Sure. Does he need to step down as captain because Victorian media demands it? No.

Yeah spot on. Vic media running with the line that it's the Eagles losing Oscar because Mitchell is so good at making the case for Hawthorn.
Completely ignorant of the fact that the Eagles have not only a damn good reason to tamper their contract offer. I.e. question marks over his body, depth of tall forwards that will develop alongside the rest of the young squad, and the potential to get fair compensation if he leaves as a RFA.

I thought Allen was out of contract this year but it is actually next year. So there is a whole 18 months to go before he is a free agent. Why would the club resign him now when there is that much time left and they can wait and see how he goes with staying on the park? It is not in the clubs interests at all to resign him on a long term deal right now.

And why is Mitchell bothering to come over here and meet him 18 months before any movement is possible. They don't have the draft capital to get anything done this year. And i think their idea is to get him as a free agent and not have to hand over any draft capital anyway. They are wayyyy jumping the gun.

Nah he is out of contract this year as a RFA.

He is out of contract this year. Reid is 18 months.

Club put him in this position?

BARRETT: Oscar Allen got caught. Now, he must pay the price - https://www.afl.com.au/news/1291142

100 percent agree with this.
Wasn't sure where to put it.

He is right, but also wrong. In days gone by no other outcome would be conceivable and the player and the club would just voluntarily to this. But, just like in modern politics you could be the leader of a country and caught red handed engaging in the most corrupt behaviour imaginable, you are actually not obligated to resign. You just don't. No one can make you, so if you do it's actually a sign of weakness. Right and wrong do not even factor into it. And Oscar Allen certainly shouldn't resign just because Damian ****ing Barrett writes an article correctly stating that it is the ONLY thing that can happen now. No. "Make me campaigners" is the only answer.

The treatment of Oscar Allen by some supporters on this subforum has been disappointing, to say the least. Oscar has been one of the club's most committed players, he consistently puts his body on the line in games. In fact, aside from Jeremy McGovern, no one has the on field balls to do what he's done for our club over the years. been as dedicated to the club’s cause over the past few seasons as Oscar Hang your head in shame you Kents! Fickle fans seem to have turned on him.

For a player like Oscar, who has given so much to the club, it’s disheartening to see some supporters so quick to push him out the door. It’s easy to forget that players like Oscar are at the mercy of both their managers and the club, and when things are not aligning contract-wise, it's a business decision—nothing personal.

If he decides to leave, we should respect that, wish him the best of luck, and let him chase his own success. If that means he ends up at the Hawks, then fine. At least we'd likely get a band one compensation pick, which, in the long term, would benefit the club.

However, some of the comments posted on the forum are a sad reflection of the modern mentality that sees players as commodities to be traded or disposed of at will. Take, for instance, the harsh sentiments expressed by users like GoEaglesGoSGIO, who openly state that Oscar should be stripped of his captaincy and dropped for even thinking about his future beyond West Coast. This kind of knee-jerk reaction only fosters an environment of disrespect for players who, day in and day out, put their bodies and hearts on the line for the club.

Additionally, the suggestion that Oscar should be punished because he met with another club's coach is absurd. As several users pointed out, meetings like these are a part of how the AFL industry operates in 2025. They are a way for players to make informed decisions about their futures, even if those conversations are uncomfortable for fans to see. The real issue lies with the club’s handling of the contract negotiation, not with Oscar, who is merely navigating the business side of football.

If Oscar does decide to leave, we shouldn’t view it as an act of betrayal. He’s been one of our hardest-bravest players, and if his best option lies elsewhere, then so be it. There’s a chance we’ll get a pick 1 or pick 2 in return, which could help us rebuild quicker than expected. And to those who might still feel bitter about him possibly leaving for the Hawks: consider this...What other options do we have? Do we hold on to a player for the sake of pride, or do we look to the future and make decisions that benefit the club in the long run?

The treatment of Oscar Allen by some of the WCE supporters is a low point. If we want to remain a successful club, it’s crucial that we support our players, especially those who have shown time and time again they’re ready to give everything for the jumper. If Oscar decides to leave, we can only thank him for his contributions, and hope that whatever happens, the club comes out stronger for it.

I've provided you the AFL's own statement, which says age is a factor.

Every trade 'expert' in the media references it when discussing compo.

You can refuse to believe it all you want but it's right there, in plain writing.

Money and age are the 2 main factors, not the length.
Length now carries equal weight as money and age. Twomey covered this when the rules were updated, to stop teams pulling a “Brisbane offering Daniher a 3 year deal” type shenanigans.

Agree with this, main issue imo is d the timing.

If reports are true and we ‘low balled’ him early and left the door open. Can’t get upset when he is talking to other clubs who are offering more years and more money.

Is the right time to met with these clubs at Rd3 after a Derby where you don’t touch it? 100% no, wait until the bye now.
Yep 100%
He’s entitled to look at his options, but as captain it isn’t a good look for anyone.
But to do it now after round 3 is pretty dumb. Means if found out, you have a whole year of negative press to deal with. And also shows he took on captaincy at start of season when he was intending to leave. If he left it till mid year you could argue he took on captaincy in good faith but over course of year decides he’d leave

Allen should have treated the club with more respect by having his meeting with Mitchell over Zoom rather than humiliate the club by having public meetings with coaches of other clubs. He deserves the criticism.

As I said before doesnt pass the pub test. You can test my theory out

Before you go to lunch, go to your manager and tell him you are going to a job interview with one of your competitors, you hope he doesnt mind and you will be back at 2pm.

Techniclly he should be OK, continue to pay you and then thank you when you leave yeah?

In a lot of people's minds, it's not the fact that he's thinking of leaving, it was the way it was done.
If he doesn't want a zoom call with Mitchell, it could've been done behind closed doors or left it up to his manager to deal with it.

No matter how you want to spin it, that's not leadership.

Let’s hold off on judgement until we get some facts, but if the facts are he met with Mitchell without the club’s knowledge or agreement then he needs to stand down as captain. Simple as that. If the club gave the ok for him to meet with other clubs and/or their representatives then he’s done absolutely nothing wrong.

Probably get back and find you have lost access to IT systems.

Pykes already said he had no idea about it
