Any possibility the Saints and the Cats did a deal? We won't take Dodson if we can have Hoffman.
I was puzzled that Geelong, who had a couple of picks in front of us at the back end of the draft (44 & 45, 52 & 53), selected the ruckman (Jacob Molier) who played second fiddle to Dodson this year, at pick 52.

And then we selected Dodson with pick 53.

A bit strange, but other clubs could have also jumped in and drafted Dodson at that stage.

Letting Hoffman slide through was also unexpected at the beginning of the draft but we were tight for list spaces and we have a squillion defenders, with Cole still to be rookied.

Put it down to coincidence and circumstances. Although it was an unusual chain of events especially when considering Geelong’s reported interest in Dodson.

Peckett I would think

We filled a few areas of need like developing ruck (Dodson) and another small forward/pinch hit mid

Re Dodson - he will take time like all young rucks... a solid development year coming up in tandem with Moose at Sandy

I was one that thought Travaglia was a reach at 7 but at worst he will be a great Webster/Paton replacement down back with his ability to play on small/medium forwards & also provide a line breaking & link up run alternative to NAS out of the backline

I am still have reservations about his long term ability to go full time mid as there may always be better pure mid players in our squad but he could very well find himself on a wing opposite Wilson which could be pretty special given the running power both have.

Barratt if he puts on more size and strength could be our future full back ... currently 194cm .... tough & aggressive with a touch of mongrel .... no one says no to that

Tauru & Barratt both have experience at either end of the ground so nice to have some versatility going forward though you would expect both to find their permanent happy postion as Battle did

Boxshall has some great running qualities but is a harder read .... he will probably need to spend some time in the 2nds

What I do love about all our draftees is that they are all fantastic overhead ..... all one grabbers and strong in the air ..... very under rated skill ... and none seem to take a backward step in a contested situation ..... all love the contest ..... no vanilla

Tigers (hard not to) and Eagles.

Bulldogs also quietly did really well.

North are the only 'losers' this year with trading their F1 away. Even then I wouldn't say it was a total loss as Finn and Matt are damn good players. Urquhart late in the draft as well is a good pick up.

The Age 22/11

St Kilda

Tobie Travaglia (8), Alix Tauru (10), James Barrat (32), Hugh Boxshall (45), Alex Dodson (53), Patrick Said (60)
The Saints are banking on Travaglia becoming a full-time midfielder at the next level, and he certainly has the endurance to help make that happen, while also being a capable defender. Tauru caught the eye most for his fearless aerial work and intercepting down back, but St Kilda are not ruling him out playing a role up forward or even developing into a midfielder at some stage. Barrat gives them another key defensive option, and they are excited about midfielder Boxshall’s athleticism. Ruckman and basketball convert Dodson tumbled down the order after being touted as a potential first-round pick, while Said is a sharpshooting small forward. - Marc McGowan
Football boss David Misson: “We were obviously very active, with six selections, and we were really pleased coming out of tonight, [getting] James Barrat, as a key defender, which is an area on our list we feel we needed to shore up. We really do see Tobie Travaglia eventually becoming a consistent midfielder, and Alix Tauru working at both ends of the ground ... Hugh Boxshall’s athletic profile is elite … and Alex Dodson we rated very highly and were very surprised for him to be available at that pick, as was Patrick Said.”

So at the end of the day we picked up 3 midfielders ( counting Travaglia) and a ruck that runs through the midfield. 2 thirds of our selections play midfield.

So we did get midfielders. The argument now is quantity v quality

And me too....in reference to a top line mid coming next year.

I just can't help but feel it's part of the strategy over the next 2 years......to many on here it seems that our list management guys have lost the plot.........they have gone "defender stir crazy"

Our 2 "blonde bombshells" selected last night were IMHO....an excellent pick up.....one a possible future foward and another a mid(I'm very confident with Tobie achieving that)

The plan and still is I believe was to hit the draft this year.....and next and go "
full throttle " on free agency at the end of 2025.

I'm guessing that a very very good mid....or two....is in there sights for the end of 2025.

For me....IMHO.....it makes more sense with what we're doing right now......filling KP holes....real or perceived......with the list.

Old Maxy is back at it again. Poor old smooth brain can’t figure out that they’re two different things.

Oh Max. I was there. This is beyond tedious but we can help explain it to you...again.

It was about THE PRICE, you toadstool level moron. And..Checks notes. Yep. Brisbane paying picks 40, 42, 43 and 46 for a player bid at pick 5.

To equate that to us not matching a bid at pick 66 is fertiliser brain work in action.

Does Max get paid for his moronic output?

Is the Rookie draft as simple as Peckett or Cole? Or will there be another Riley Bonner type

There loss is our gain.

I rated Dodson as a first round talent.

I didn't want to spend an early pick on a ruck but he was the obvious best ruck in the draft. Ideal situation.

As it stands this morning.

We have 18 listed players born 2000 or earlier.

Our oldest players are Webster Hill Wood - they will be 32 next season.

We are currently at 24 listed players born 2001 or after. With the oldest in this group, Ryan Byrnes and Liam Henry - They will be 24 years old next season.
