Let us ignore the Battle as part of a fantasy deal for BKING for 2022

However with the emergence of Sharman Battle is probably one of our very few tradable that other teams may want, that we can actually afford to let go.

Ratts does not seem to want to play him at CHB, and we already now have Highmore, Wilkie and Coffield as tallish back flankers. Smalls in Sinclair, Webster Clarke and Paton. As well as Hill etc.

Up forward for 2022 we have King FF, Marshall CHF (rotating with Paddy) with Membrey and now Sharman. Plus Wood has proven to a capable "fill-in" forward.

Battle is not a winger etc. So where does he now play?

So yes I think Battle may be on the trade table. The deal may not get done, but I think that they will test the waters.
King , Battle , Clark , Coffield , Bytel , Connolly , Byrne , Sharman are all going to have periods they will like to forget but as the mature and development there is no telling how good these kids will be - the talk of trading Coffield and Battle is totally stupid because we have not seen the best of them.

Battle could be the one with the most upside because of his endurance , he could easily become a midfielder in the Cripps mold - after starting his career under Richardson defense at all costs game plan has most probably quelled his natural flair and if given a good run at any position next year could be his step up.

We know he is a capable defender and we know he has the knack to kick goals , next year will be the year for him knowing his contract is up , the determination will be to show his best or he will go the way of Acres - Parish was in the same boat , basically unwanted last year and now is killing it and he is 24 not 22.

The same talk about Bytel needing to get more of the ball in his 13th game but this year has only played 6 games with more than 66% TOG and the telling game for me was against the Hawks where he had 12 contested possessions and 8 tackles / 7 clearances.
By the looks they are making him develop his defensive part of his game before letting him roam , the same as they did with Steele - and 5 of those 6 games he played he had 7 or more tackles.
Bytel is going to be special just by how he uses the ball and he wins contested ball which is a sure sign the kid is good , plus he is a goal kicker which is a bonus.

That's the whole idea of "trade"
If you don't give anything of value, you don't get anything of value back.

I'm not over the moon about trading anyone , but i don't get the attitude that you only trade garbage.

I think we are a seller this year not a buyer. 1 or 2 of Dunstan Ross Billings will go, all free agents so limited compensation. Lonie out of contract and surplus to needs should go but is unlikely to be anything more than a DFA or 4th round pick Kent similar. Battle could bring a 3rd rounder if there is a willing buyer, Long similar. So a smattering of mid to late draft picks is my expectation of our trade haul this year.

All the options being proposed for trades coming in are not going to move the needle our gaps are quality midfielders specifically ones that provide a point of difference to Steele and Crouch and a replacement for Ryder. Our list is the oldest it has ever been second only to Geelong which is the oldest list there has ever been. We need to go to the draft. The goal should be to have enough talent to maximise Kings peak years so midfielders and more midfielders from the draft with the requisite mature age state league diamond in the 4th round or Rookie draft. Our drafting has actually been remarkably good in recent years with limited access to the early rounds. Back the recruiters in and go with youth.

If I was the list management team this is how I’d go about it:

Delist/retired: Carlisle, McKernan, Roberton, Hunter, Frawley
Trade/lost to FA: Battle, Dunstan

Hope we get two late second/early third round picks for Battle and Dunstan then on-trade the later one to the Swans for McLean.

Pick up Talia as a DFA. Resign Billings and Ross for less than they are currently on but longer contracts (4 and 3) but let them go if they don’t agree with terms. Resign Kent, Clavarino, Joyce and Lonie for one year.

We currently have picks 9, 46 and 64. Add to that the pick we get for Battle/Dunstan that isn’t used on McLean. Grab Gibcus with 9 for that young KPD gun, and NGA prospects Owens, Windhager for midfield depth and Peris to become our future Hind.

Finally, use our rookie draft pick on whoever catches the eye of our recruiters, I’d be hoping for another outside midfielder or ruckman.

In summary

Out: Carlisle, Roberton, Frawley, Hunter, McKernan, Battle, Dunstan
In: Talia, McLean, Gibcus, Owens, Windhager, Peris, Rookie Pick

Round 1 Saints team:

Paton Howard Webster
Wilkie Highmore Sinclair

Ryder Steele Crouch

McKenzie Jones Coffield Butler

Reserves team:

Long Talia Geary
Clavarino Gibcus Peris

If the swans genuinely have a salary cap squeeze, I'd be kicking the tires on Ollie Florent. Not a world beater but a good player at the right price.
That description applies to most of our list already. We are good at accumulating or developing GOPs. Either specialists or Elite players need apply.

Doesn’t sound to shabby. I’m massive on giving Peris a crack. Played little this year but had some good games at sandy, mostly played at school level. No idea how he went because Melbourne grammar is shit on any updates. Named on the wing for the allies which is awesome. Not sure where his best spot is but couple be a dangerous small forward with that speed. Would be close to the fastest guy in the afl.

The only thing I'd say after saying that I wasn't keen is that he doesn't often play as a full time midfielder and is more a mobile wingman. His best junior footy was as a bit more of an on baller. He has potential to be like Parish. He's a bit younger than I realised. From the Battle draft.

We’ve been developing a lot of good young talent, both of the McCombs for example. Even a player like Leon Alao has upside.

The Suns will demand 2 top 10 picks AND a player like Battle/Sharman/Byrnes/Coffield.
Tom Boyd trade in the nearest example. Contracted and ended up costing Pick 6 and Griffen.

No doubt a premium cost would need to be paid but I'd be happy coughing up a Pick 1 equivalent for Bing.

So this years first, next years first and Battle and something back.

5 year+ spine - Howard, Bing, Steele, Marshall, Ming.

Keep Billings, trade Dunstan, get another ruckman - unlock the trophy cabinet!!!!!!

I see you managed to sneak Ross onto the Sandy bench.

If l was the head of Football Operations, l would fire you on the spot.

Yeah I wouldn't be trading Battle, even though I acknowledge he's got some trade value. Too much upside, love his hardness and we can't drop anymore kep position depth.

I liked him in his draft year and still do, he’s a clean user of the ball and isn’t afraid to put his head over the ball. The only knock i have is he doesn’t get big numbers but the swans have a very good midfield. It seems a bit pointless to let billings walk and then fork out for Florent. He‘s a few years younger and more of a genuine mid but he probably goes straight onto the wing.
