Richmond will grow unbelievably if we win a flag.
No wonder Hawthorn are where they are.
The thing is we are breathing down their necks after 30 odd years of no success.

Now imagine if we had the success of a Hawthorn recently?
Biggest club in the land baby!;)

This is a fair point. That said if Hawthorn were a 1897 or 1908 club I have no doubt the Hawks would be a far bigger club than they are right now. People underestimate the impact of the early history on long term membership and support.

If nothing else it just shows how difficult it is to attract support, Hawthorn have won 10 flags and made 16 GF's in a touch over 40 years and yet they are still only the 5th biggest club in Victoria in terms of people support.

Climbing the ladder in a saturated market like Melbourne is impossible given the AFL'S equalisation agenda.

Anyway, Hawthorn 53,947

Terrific achievement really when you consider we haven't had any premierships to build a membership on hence no bandwagon.
You only bandwagon after a flag.

So all the people calling Richmond supporters bandwagoners are way off the mark.
Will not mind the bandwagon though.

If it makes Richmond an even better club.

The concept of bandwagon support is wrong. Every club has a base of supporters, when a club fails to perform on the field their base of support lapses and becomes latent support. Richmond have no high or lower portion of this support than any other club its just they have a bigger pool of support (mostly from their success in the 1930's and 1940's) than some other clubs.

Your admin did a great job of engaging wit hthe masses once the rebuild commenced in earnest. To think that 2011 was the first time your club passed 40,000 members. Hope sells. So does hype.

Collingwood's big supporter base stems from the 4 flags in a row.
Richmond were actually going to be one of the founding clubs of the then VFL but were outvoted.

We'll see. We've slowed down a fair bit, albeit we're still 6,000 ahead of last year and 3,500 more than your tally...

Richmond will need to sign up 10,000 to 12,000 more members than last year to have more paid up members for season 2014 than Hawthorn

We are over 12k ahead of last year for 6th Feb. Puts us on target for 72,000 at least. We stopped counting memberships midseason last year though and started the 2014 campaign then where you would get the rest of 2013 games free if you buy a 2014 membership then. That was the first time we have stopped counting midseason, so I think we'll skip that idea if we want to get to 75,000. We should sell a few in the 2nd half the season and get close to 75,000. Hawks should get over 70,000

Both Collingwood + Richmond support ultimately stems from that 1920-1945 period.

Collingwood played off in 15 GF's and won 7 flags
Richmond played off in 14 GF's and won 5 flags

John Coleman played a significant role in the development of Essendon's support base...for a club that now dominates the N/W it should be remembered that they played home matches at the EMCG up until the mid 1920'S

You could very well match and surpass us, likewise you might not. Given we're something like 6k to 7k up on the same time last year and given we're still 3.5k ahead of Richmond (and we finished 3.5k up on 2013 members) talking up surpassing us in round 1 is very premature.

That said, if you were to win a flag in the near future you would definitely pass us.

We always outsell you guys in the new year. Just basing the figures on how much we are both up on last year and the sales rate from last year.

Actually what is the total membership tally for all clubs based in Melbourne?

Would love to know the figure.

Current as of 4pm today

So by highlighting this your suggesting the member we have aren't?

17,000 more members and are on target for 90,000 members.

Numbers only Richmond can dream of

50,000! It's Cougar time. I mean, it's TIGER time.

Damn these Bigfooty ads are really getting into my brain

Not at all. I'm merely talking about the Richmond members last year claiming that signed a few thousand more members in 2013 when they were purchasing membership for season 2014. I have no doubt all members that have signed so far this season are members for 2014.

Just to clarify what that meant. I think the cut off time was august(not june of previous years) last year but we didn't count any in that frame as extra sales. What we did was include entry of the last few games(not sure how many), whilst selling 2014 memberships. A bonus offer if you will. That number was around 5/6k.

While this is true it is the success since then that has cemented it. Collingwood has been a perennial contender, even during the Colliwobbles era (is that still going?) they were still making regular GF's and winning more then they lost during the H&A. Richmond also had their era from 1967-1982 to help cement their supporter base.

Compare this to Melbourne who had a similar (if not better) period of success to Richmond and Collingwood's 1920-1945 era. From 1939-1964 Melbourne played off in 12 GF's and won 10 but as you can see sustained poor performances from 1965-1986 decimated out supporter base and while we have been relatively competitive since 1987 (except the last 7 years) we haven't been able to translate that into sustained membership numbers. Hopefully a period of success (whether a perennial contender or winning a flag or two ;)) will see many of our lapsed members and supporters sign up and we will be able to get to the 50k mark as a base - currently our base is about 35k hopefully pushing 40k this year but we have about 12k former members who have dropped off over the last 2-3 years.

It really is crazy when you think about the achievements all clubs but specifically Collingwood, Hawthorn and Richmond have made in recent years considering in the 90's 20k members was seen as huge and the benchmark. Now the Dogs and Saints have 20k members in January and it is seen as worrying signs.

It's only a top 4 finish away for Richmond. Far from a dream. About 10 finals appearances to 2 this century and you only have 17k more lol

Plus 10 million more in revenue, the pies also kick Richmond's arse in attendance and nation wide support!

Actually if you look at the face book support numbers Richmond are behind the following clubs;

Collingwood
Essendon
Carlton (yes they are bigger then Richmond )
West coast
Hawthorn ( have overtaken Richmond as the 4th biggest Vic club, have more members and Facebook likes)
Sydney
Richmond.
Atleast the tigers are part if the big 7;-)

Facts do not lie

Richmond only have a big following in Victoria. Interstate they are just minnows.

Collingwood
Essendon
Carlton
Hawthorn

They are nation wide clubs

For the hell of it: since 1992 until 4pm today

This is a reminder of how big Adelaide used to be. They were the biggest club in the AFL in those early Modra years.
Rising again, but due to stadium capacity and polulation growth will never catch Eagles, Dockers (one new stadium ready), Pies, Hawks, Bombers, Tigers.
