Expansion PNG Joins NRL .......... Options For AFL ??

Just like indigenous players in Australia?

Once they leave the communities and experience the big city life they all leave their homelands and never go back.

NOT.
Have no doubt when they retire from
First grade these players head home.
But haven’t heard of any club needing a walled safe community in Australia with players desperate to join.
You are basically saying PNG players will all bail out and leave their extended families and migrate.
For a time during their NRL career? Yep.
Some might. But not all.
The ones with a lot of talent that will get big coin to move will.

What is everyone’s obsession with expansion teams?

Tasmania is going to be a disaster of monumental proportions and people are still fixated on adding more teams 🤪

Nothing wrong with expansion. But expansion like this when for the same coin they would get a club in Perth, Adelaide and a second NZ or Melbourne club which will grow the grassroots. Crazy.

How’s this for wish casting.
2028 Panffers have won their 7th straight flag but age is beginning to show with Nathan Cleary. For a large amount of tax free money, he and his wife of 5 years, Mary Fowler, decide to set up home in her mother’s home town of Port Moresby. The Port Moresby Vipers win the flag in their first season.

It will basically be a national team with other players from the surrounding region.

Then they will pay top dollar for 5 or 6 key players in areas of need.

Again, there are no local PNG players in the NRL at the moment.

It will need to be overwhelmingly players from Australia / NZ.....or they will be continuously thrashed

That's funny considering there is one PNG player in the AFL. Or has been the past few years, Oea from the suns. He came through an AFL academy too, we should hit the government up for some increased funding for AFL development in PNG too.

Will it?

How many players raised in PNG and the PIs are currently in the NRL?

It they do that it will be the worst team in NRL history
There’s a handful of png players currently playing nrl but there is an absolute ton of Pacific Islander players and good ones currently playing nrl I’m not shore they will be lining up to play for a png side though . When this was originally floated a couple years ago they were talking about playing half there games in North Queensland or Darwin be interesting how they structure it

There are no PNG raised players in the NRL. Jack De Belin is the only player listed as in their squad who is playing in the NRL....he has a PNG born grand mother apparently

There are a tonne of PI heritage players......there would be very few who were raised in the PIs

BTW, is it racist to suspect that PI players born in Sydney or Auckland would be no more inclined than white players to go and live in Port Moresby?

It seems to me the opposite is true

PNG definitely has a lot of undeveloped talent there nsw cup team has a lot off talented young players it would be a generational thing similar to gws and Gold Coast to get them competitive with a majority local talent. I agree that a lot of the pacific island talent generally move to New Zealand and Australia at a young age not sure they would inclined to want to play for a png club a team based in Samoa or Fiji would have been half a chance

A bunch of PNG national team players are Australian citizens who haven't lived there since they were kids or have never lived there.

That's rugby league though, a bunch of Polynesian Australians playing for their parents/grandparents homeland country, to make the game appear more international than it actually is.

All well and good while the government are paying for it. Becomes a pretty big drain in 10 years time if money dries up. Perth/SA would have made more sense.

Papua New Guinean’s are just not built for the sport. It’s a very interesting situation. They bring nothing to the comp but it also looks like an opportunity too good to refuse for the NRL.

For better or worse, I live in Wests Tigers territory. Justin Olam plays for the Tigers and he was raised in PNG. I think he came to Australia about 10 years ago (he is 30 now).

Couldn't tell you about players in other teams.

Edit: Just pulled this from Wiki

Justin Olam was born and raised in Gon, a small village in the Sinesine Yonggomugl District of the mountainous Chimbu Province, Papua New Guinea.

He was not able to play much rugby league due to both of his parents wanting him to prioritise his education.

Olam was educated at Rosary (Kondiu) Secondary School in Chimbu and attended the Papua New Guinea University of Technology in Lae Morobe Province where he graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Applied Physics. Whilst studying for his degree, Olam began playing rugby league for the Unitech Spartans in the PNG Universities competition.

In 2015, during his final year at the Papua New Guinea University of Technology, he went on to play for the Lae Snax Tigers in the Papua New Guinea National Rugby League.

Well looks like he didn't play this year.....perhaps because of injury?

I am relying on the wiki "current squad"

Actually has two players listed here but one (Daniel Russell.....white father lived in PNG until he was 16 apparently) has move to the Super League after 8 games in the NRL)

or one or a combination of Tonga/Samoa/Fiji/South Island

None of those places are viable

And the bottom line is, when it comes to sporting clubs, a club failure is a club failure.

The only advantage you get over starting a team from scratch is that there are a group of players and coaches notionally without a team. You are still generally worse off in the area you have killed off a team than before you had a team at all because you've burnt people....and in some instances they've given up allegiances to support this club

This is why the AFL essentially has one asterixed killed off club (i.e. Fitzroy) in at least the last 110 years when University ended its brief presence.

You shouldn't start a club unless it is for keeps.
