2014 Membership tallies - Final AFL 2014 Tally in OP

There are 98,252 non-access members, and 193,810 reduced access members, so I'd say yes. So long as it's $50 or more, has contact details and a membership pack, it counts.

Must admit, $50 for no access seems odd.

So the big take out from the numbers is that around 36% (close to 300k / just over 800k) of all members of AFL clubs are now not what we have traditionally thought of as real members. Those 36% are instead non-access members (12% of total members) and probably a large number on 3-game memberships and any similar offerings (representing 24% of total members).

Surely these categories are one of the main driving forces behind the surge in club membership in the last decade. While real / full membership levels have undoubtedly still increased strongly in most clubs, it seems to suggest that a not insignificant proportion of membership growth is really an illusion.

True, although perhaps it's us who need to shift our understanding/belief of what a member is.

does seem like an arbitrary number, maybe it was to price out the crows streaming memberships from being counted.
I thought the price point for most digital memberships was about $50 so I'm not sure it would count out too many. Essendon's digital membership has been a flat $50 the last few years, possibly to fit with this price point and ensure "digital members" are counted.

I still don't see the point in people arguing the toss about what constitutes a "real" member though. Money is money.

You maybe right price was to include them.

As for why people care, the same reason people care about member numbers in the firstplace.

It's a dick measuring contest.

Some of us are interested in the trends and the numbers, dick measuring contest or not.

I agree and this is probably driven by it's large MCC / AFL membership. It counters this from a revenue perspective by selling many more season seats than the majority of clubs.
AFL Members are actually counted in the numbers separetly, not sure what SMA is, but that grouping makes up 54k members.

Clubs offer baby memberships as well as digital membership which count as non-access members.

AFL Members are included with Club members where they choose club support - and haven been since 1993 at least. SMA is Adelaide Ovals equivelant of stadium membership, how this ties into the Crows/Power figures Ive no real idea, but the AFL is counting this as an Adelaide equivelant to an AFL membership, which in truth it probably is.

There are 8000 SMA Adelaide Oval Football memberships which get you into all 22 games. The AFL have decided that this year there will be a 65-35% split, the Crows have been allocated 5250 and Port 2750. Next year the SMA Members will be asked to nominate either Crows or Port when they pay their memberships.

I'd love to see a state split for some of the clubs.

I think many of the non Victorian clubs would have a few Victorian members (each would play 5-6 games in Melbourne so it would be worth it)

Swans Vic supporters was last reported at 9600ish in early July.

Wow, just shows how important the Vic members are. I wonder what that figure is for Brisbane?

Swans have a high vic membership because we are south melbourne whether outsiders agree with it or not.
Brisbane and fitzroy are unlikely to have the same relationship and therefore not so many members.

The swans also make very little money from the south of the border memberships because there is no agreement with the MCG or Etithad.
the membership is almost at cost, Which is why swans fans get stung more than anyone with that reserved seating upgrade shit.
It's only important for member numbers and more importantly rewarding the Swans faithful that stuck with the club through the relocation.

No official figure for this year, but my educated guess is between 3,000 and 4,000 based on my reasonable knowledge of the Lions Vic membership base figures since the merger.

There are a substantial number of ex-Fitzroy people that do follow Brisbane (probably at least 50%, possibly even 2/3) but unlike Sydney there was a significant number that did not because of the way the merger went down.

However, the Lions had around 7,000 Vic members at the end of our golden era in 2004-2005.

Since 2004 we have made the finals once in 10 years. In that time the Swans have probably only missed the finals once. That would probably be the biggest reason for the difference in membership figures.

And by the way the Lions Vic memberships are also not financially beneficial for Brisbane unfortunately. It is the same situation as for the Swans. Both teams are forced to pay Melbourne club's each time their supporters use a Vic membership to go to a Vic game involving their team.

Afl club support are counted as club members which is part of each clubs final membership tally. E.g out of Collingwood's 80,793 member's for 2014 12,900 are Collingwood afl members. The same goes with Essendon's 6,400 afl members.
