Alexio Yiannakis played as good a small forward's game as you'll ever seen in the pouring rain on Saturday night at Peel. 10 touches, 4 tackles, 4 goals. Mitch Williams is one of my favourites as well. Just a natural medium forward. Great hands, good in the contest. Torrent's ability to find space also very impressive.

Yeah I agree with all of that.

I'm cautious to put smaller players in the top 50 because I know recruiters aren't that keen on them these days but if they are playing as well as Yiannakis did then why not.

Curious also that Bienfait Kihusa (EP) didn't make the WA 16's squad. I guess it's that height thing again.

This list is getting more and more difficult to do as it's not the players with obvious AFL athletic qualities who are impacting matches.

It's a dilemma - on one hand you want to acknowledge the players that are playing well, no matter their body shape or size or skill level. On the other hand one must concede that AFL recruiters will rarely give those types of players a second look.

Hopefully this list is a balance between the two.

thanx for the effort you put in i appreciate it, i think injuries to guys like Koen Sanchez and Daniel Curtin dont help because if fit they would be pretty high in points, also Mitch Edwards plays a role that doesnt gain easy votes, but he played fantastic for a tall in the champs as an underager and could become a quality player next year?, Tyzreise Clark and Xavier Walsh im curious how they go in their draft years as well.

im interested in seeing the younger O'Driscoll and how he could develop, i have not seen much of him so im curious about how he plays, Mitch Williams has potential as well.

im sure there will be a few that pop up next year from WA. (Hardeman and Tholstrup were fantastic for WA in the champs this year)

Thanks mate. That's reassuring.

Tyzreise Clark is in trouble. He hasn't looked like the player he once was since his return but it was pointed out to me that players can take a lot of time to regain confidence and form after injury, so I guess I'll wait and see and hope for the best because I love watching him play when he's on.

Aiden O'Driscoll is only small at this stage but he has the Darcy Jones poise and balance. He's a right footer - completely different in style and appearance to his older brother. Just really neat and tidy and elusive like Jed Hagan and Jones.

Reece Torrent is one who deserves his spot up at 4. He's almost identical to Hardeman. Left foot - slightly odd kicking style - finds space. I'm glad they don't play for the same team because I would get them confused.

The kid that has come out of nowhere is Jack Saunders (SD). He is a standard 6ft mid but there is more to him than I initially thought. Very clean and has a hunger for possessions. There's a touch of Murray Wrensted about him.

I hope observers keep an eye on Lance Collard (S). Easily the most unorthodox and naturally gifted player on the list. On the weekend he got 20 disposals but at least 10 of them were 10 soccer kicks - some booted on the volley which found a team mate in horrendous flooded conditions. It was weird to watch but somehow genius at the same time.

Jett O'Rourke (EP/PSA) and Xavier Walsh (EP/PSA) haven't played a single colts game so it's tough to assess them.

A couple of players who have burst on to the scene in the last two weeks include Eli Alexander (WP), a 192cm forward who kicked 3 goals on debut and I "think" I saw something worth following. Also Judd Kelman (S). He made the 8 hour drive to the city from Kalgoorlie to make a colts debut and picked up 22 disposals on a flooded Leederville to pick up his club's second best player award. He dominates footy in Kal but I guess that's the last time we'll see him this season.

Coen Livingstone looked a little nervous and tentative in the state games and didn't put his best foot forward but at colts level he is super impactful and aggressive. I didn't know he was an Indigenous fella but apparently he is related to Chance Bateman...so there ya go.

Is Kobe Austin even back playing after that round 1 injury? Must of been a pretty nasty one if still out.
I'm not sure. It looked like a very serious knee injury. Maybe 12 months. I've just seen him the pre-season state 17's exhibition game - where he was outstanding - and then early this season in colts.

I'm pretty sure I saw an outstanding tall defender....I think I've got his high ranking correct but the longer time goes on the more I doubt myself.

Maybe someone who watches PSA can tell us if he has since come back?

Kobe is still rehabbing that knee injury that occurred after the round 1 game against Peel. He's had knee problems in the past.

Riley Mayfield needs to be higher on this list as he is in red hot form for Subiaco with an impressive last couple weeks.
Another player too low on this list is Chad Dunscombe, he has become an unsung hero for East Fremantle this season and leads the WAFL colts competitions in tackles with an impressive 96 for the season.
Also Presley Campbell, he is one of my favourite players to watch with his skills of halfback. He hasn't played many colts games due to PSA but performed really well and I have heard great things of him for Aquinas as well.

Any thoughts on this?????

The state 17's exhibition game played at the start of the season is a really good resource for getting to recognise most of the 2005 prospects. You'll recognise many of the names on the team lists I've provided. A bit has changed since. Some have dropped off or stepped up and others have emerged from outside this group but the core are still there.

Note: From the current Top 50 the following were injured or not part of the state program at that time. 2-Daniel Curtin (CL), 5-Koen Sanchez (EF), 8-Jack Saunders (SD), 19-Tyzreise Clark (S), 23-Riley Mayfield (S), 26-Max Willson (CL), 33-Alexio Yiannakis (EP), 35-Patrick Shaw (EF), 37-Elijah Scoble (P), 38-Judd Kelman (S), 40-Eli Alexander (WP), 45-Oliver Sills (SD), 46-Aiden Riddle (CL), 47-Chadd Dunscombe (EF), 49-Darcy Clarke (PT)

Note: Luker Kentfield (S) and Koltyn Tholstrup (S) are both wearing guernsey 36 for WA Black for some unknown reason but are easy to tell apart as Kentfield is taller and heavier.

As I said, I'm trying to balance players who are performing well while knowing full well that recruiters are looking for "athletes" with AFL qualities.

Do you think AFL recruiters are going to seriously consider Mayfield, Dunscombe or Campbell based on drafting over the last 5 years?

I've at least got them in the list. I don't reckon many others would because they know recruiters aren't interested in smaller, smart footballers anymore. They'd rather a player who can jump vertically and touch a piece of plastic on a pole.

It's sad that footy isn't open to players of all heights, shapes and sizes anymore but I can't do anything about it even though I don't like it.

Great job here. Always interested to see how these lists evolve over time. Agree it can be difficult. Seeing the boys who perform well and accumulate stats at this level often aren’t what recruiters are looking for at an AFL draftable level ie they may be fully developed, they may be able find the ball but lack efficiency in their disposal (this doesn’t show in stats and is very hard to fix from this age), lack athleticism and as you have referred to, may just quite simply not be going to be big enough. There are obviously many other factors that come into consideration.

It must also be hard to get a good read on some of the PSA boys as they don’t get to play as many colts games and get seen as much.

Always good to acknowledge both. A very balanced list I feel.

I watched the game for a second time just to be sure and to see how things compare from then to now.

Maybe I did mark Austin a little bit too high and to read that he has had knee issues before now is a worry. I'm not sure what others thought but here is my goalkickers/best.

WA Black 14.13 (97)
WA Gold 6.7 (43)
Goals WAB: Kentfield 4, De Masi 2, Tholstrup 2, Logan 2, Hall, C Kelly, Harbour, Collard 1
WAG:Taylor 2, Cahill, Tangney, Smith, Parasiliti 1

Best WAB: Tholstrup, De Masi, Kentfield, Crane, Hall, Logan, Gianoncelli, Harbour, Chapman
WAG: O'Driscoll, L Kelly, Hawksley, Banfield, Livingstone

watching the game, so i'll edit this post with more thoughts, it seems like a probables(WA Black) Vs a possibles (WA Gold)

Koltyn Tholstrup is having a strong game, involved with plenty of marks, and links of play, kicking goals and has done little wrong and most things right, but everyone already knows of his class, the 2 36's are easy to tell apart, Kolt has curly mop of hair and the other has straight darker hair :D

Riley Hardeman is on the possibles team and has a couple good runs, but we also saw how good he was in the recent u18 champs

Clay Hall is looking good at this level, has had a couple of moments where he has beaten the oppo in a 1v2 situation.

Mitch Edwards isnt having the biggest influence, but his height and high work rate are good qualities to have for the next level

Mitch Williams and Coen Livingston having ok games with a couple good marks ect, nothing special so far in the game, have not seen Xavier Walsh on the ground to half time.

ok so theres a new player i have liked the look of, a player i have heard nothing about but looks like he could be an interesting prospect, Bailey Harbour, i have written down a few things about him (nice touch, nice work rate, nice mark, good leading patterns, pressure forward)

Awesome work mate. Yeah I like Harbour also. I have him pretty high up. Utility.

I forgot how good De masi is. He hasn't fired a shot in colts but in this game he's on song.

Nah nah it isn't possibles v probables. It's 5 WAFL teams (P, CL, EF, SF, SD) WA gold v WA Black (S, EP, PT, WP). WA gold would be stronger with Curtin and Sanchez.

just finished the game while eating dinner, some of my take aways

Koltyn Tholstrup, Riley Hardeman and Clay Hall all dominated, the best 3 players on the ground imo, if i had to pick best player i would give it to Clay Hall, he did a mountain of work through the midfield, but Tholstrup and Hardeman were all class in this game, they were a level above those 2 and we saw that in the u18 champs this year.

Xavier Walsh played KPD, in the u16's champs he played more as a forward (kicked 4 goals in his 3 games taking a heap of marks outside 50m and setting up scoring opportunities) probably the best KPD on the day

Mitch Edwards played as ruck and roaming KPP, he is very tall and competes hard in the contest, we also saw him play well at the recent u18 champs

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
there were some other talents i noticed and would like to see more of

Noah Mills - played ruck/wing with good speed and agility, really interesting prospect, not sure on his height, but he may be the next type of player at KPP height and an athletic winger who can pinch hit in the ruck? if he develops well and puts on some weight he could be an exciting prospect imo

Bailey Harbour - is another interesting prospect, pressure forward with good work rate and a nice mark, his goal kicking may need a little work though?

Zane Wearing - intense half back flank, he's that tough hbf that runs and breaks lines

Riley Crane - was Clay Halls right hand man in the midfield, supporting Hall through the mid with good work rate and run

Louis Tangney - was one of few WA Gold players to impress, ran hard all game, even when it was unrewarded running, loved his effort

Joseph Harp - really quick hbf who did little wrong, another good WA Gold player, who showed some good qualities

Aiden O'Driscoll - quick hands out of defence, i like how he chooses the 1st option and didnt make mistakes.
