Socialism does work.
People in Cuba quietly swapping houses and collecting their rations* while Puddy works 80 hour weeks to afford a mortgage on a dog box.

Do you get time off/sick leave/long service etc? Sounds like you're a victim of gig work and the like

*Still working mind, not bludging, not breaking their soul/body either

It did change, can we change it back?

I've been to Cuba. People are also quietly starving. Not just in the countryside but in Havana. Unfortunately their ration booklets aren't providing enough food to live on.

I'm a combination of permanently employed and self employed.

Socialism means getting reward for hard work, and what you're putting forward isn't that. Average full time wages used to get you a house, so what's changed? Is it capitalist greed or socialist sloth?

Combination of greed and incompetent government.
It's now the norm and will never change. Complain and get left behind. Work hard and get ahead.

Maybe a bit far with starving, but yeh they've removed some food subsidies and the rations aren't cutting it. When did you go? feel like the trump/bush and obama era were pretty different with the blockades. Still sick tunes, free housing, and good rum

Fair. I'm also mainly self employed, it's got it's positives and negatives. When people say start a business they mean exploit others labour, but that's a side point

Not too long ago. I've got friends there. The situation is very bad. People are currently starving, it's got to the stage where you have to leave.
Rations aren't cutting it means starvation. No point having a house if you have nothing to eat.

Revolt?
.....
......
Profit?

You make a profit by working more, not by bludging

Humans really don't need much food. How is Cuba's overweight and/or obesity rate compared to Australia?

Honestly it sounds like you are a slave to capitalism. That's not very socialist of you!

I'd suggest that disrupting the capitalism system would be a better option.

Didn't see too many fat people.
Humans not needing alot of food to function is bullshit, especially if you do physical work

People are quietly starving here too, welfare payments including the pension don't provide enough to live on
People with jobs after paying rent and utilities have to decide what to go without

Combination of greed and incompetent government.
Capitalism with neoliberal policies
It's now the norm and will never change.
It can be changed but it requires the people to do something
Complain and get left behind. Work hard and get ahead.
This is the opposite of doing something

You're basically saying heck anyone that can't keep up as we slide into feudalism

Well someone working four jobs would probably need to eat more than someone working one job.

I dont think it’s very sustainable though, you must be exhausted.

Food is fuel. You put the right fuel in your body and it can run for a very long time.

The aged and disability pension should be raised. However, the dole should be available for 6 months, then cut off. There is absolutely no reason to be unemployed if your physically and mentally able. Whole industries are collapsing due to lack of staff.

The situation in Cuba is very bad, far worse than it is here.

House prices going back to what they were 20-30 years ago is a fantasy. It will never happen

This capitalist system that you promote relies on 4 - 5% unemployment rate to help keep inflation down. Why shouldnt those unemployed people be paid a fair amount?

Had a colleague just come back from 8 months travelling through central America, he is a hardline progressive and hater of capitalism... and he was absolutely astonished at the state of Cuba, its a complete failure in his words.

jobseeker has people with terminal cancer on it

most people with a disability are on jobseeker not the NDIS

there are also carer payments that are a welfare payment to support someone who is looking after another person

oh and also

there are people on jobseeker who have jobs, they just can't get enough hours, or can't work enough hours to survive without support

please tell me how you're some sort of socialist supporting lefty again though

I do NDIS work, there are people on it who shouldn't be.
Long term unemployed people should be conscripted into the army so they can contribute

If the Nationals did socialism, this is what it would look like. Lets call it National Socialism.

Sure you're not a communist?

You're right, the landlord's aren't the problem. The government policies that incentivise using housing as an investment and tax break option are the problem.

Good interview today with Max Chandler-Mather on the Guardian Australian Politics podcast where he explains this well. I think he made a comment that there would be $19b in tax subsidies for investment properties this year with $15b of that going to the top 10% of earners.

My understanding is the Greens are pushing the ALP to remove negative gearing but allow existing investors to have one property grandfathered in. Sounds like a fair deal to me.

Don't remove the tax incentives, cap them at x amount of houses IMO

We still need to incentivize self funded retirement, which property offers.

One of the biggest disincentives to buying and selling houses, particularly in Victoria, is Stamp Duty. When you have to pay a shade under $50K as stamp duty to buy a house for $900K... And what happens to the $10 billion in stamp duty the government gets?

lol

Climate-warrior and Greens leader Adam Bandt has been slugging taxpayers just short of a million dollars in expenses in a single year, including spending $204,000 on printing costs.
Also on his eyebrow-raising expenses were $23,000 on two private jet flights and another $12,000 on a government-provided vehicle and petrol allowance.

His annual expense bill for 2022 was an eye-watering $963,166, not including his $314,000 salary and the wages of his personal staff, according to the Department of Finance.

Mr Bandt, whose party runs on a platform of climate change prevention, forked out $23,000 on two private jets during the 2022 election campaign.

On March 7, Mr Bandt booked a chartered flight from Townsville to Rockhampton during a tour of regional Queensland where he announced details of his plan to aggressively transition away from coal, costing taxpayers another $8,300.
