I’m genuinely starting to think that some coaches who were mostly role playing battlers in their playing days tend to over rate those guys in their coaching stints.

Nicks does it with Murphy and McHenry.
Bevo does it with players like Baker and McNeil.

I think there's a bit more to it than that, but it doesn't make it any less frustrating. All those guys have two things in common in my opinion. They run super hard, and would work their ass off at training, because they know they have to if they are going to get a game. Surely at the elite level you can find guys who do all those things while also having some genuine football ability and IQ.

Sad but this is actually the thinking of the football club, no one wants the player/he doesn’t want to leave, so we have invested too much time, effort and capital to just let them go without getting a return of years of service.

Over the years there have been many players that I’ve thought we’ve spent way too many games on. Guys like Mackay, Van Berlo etc. but at least those guys had their day on a few occasions where they were a solid contributor.

This guy is just nothing - how does he keep getting games?

Same goes for that Murphy bloke too.

There was a game where he came on as the sub and did have an impact with fresh legs. Mind you, that’s the whole point of the sub when injury/timing allows it to be used tactically.

For Murphy I think he’s kicked a bag once or twice while applying good tackling pressure.

I’m having to stretch though, and it sure does not happen often. Both fit the bill of setting the example of cracking in for a rebuilding side, but we’re past that now with improve quality in the list and both should now be depth players at most.
