AFL miss chance to boost female officials as national women's competition looms

"What a massive statement football could have delivered to young females across its clubs, state leagues, playing groups and within head office had it deemed a woman capable of fronting the series of ground-breaking announcements that have punctuated the fast-tracked journey to the historic first bounce to take place early in 2017."

The first match of the new women's competition will be held on Friday, February 3 under lights at Collingwood's Holden Centre training base, with the Magpies squaring off against traditional rivals Carlton.

Sitting adjacent to the club's training base, the Olympic Park Oval – Collingwood's home VFL venue and the ground on which the Pies train during the season – has almost no fixed seating.
