It didn't say that at all and it was in regards the whole of the then VFL not just Richmond, numbers were down across the board half the clubs were near bankruptcy the whole competition was on the verge of shutting down and one idea was that a successful Richmond is good for the comp and would bring crowds back to the game.
"The total competition had net assets of about $4 million including Waverley Park – half of the clubs were bankrupt on any analysis," he said."
Much the same goes for Carlton and Essendon and Collingwood if all of the big 4 are in the top 8 at the same time the AFL attendance will be through the roof.

2016 attendance Richmond and Carlton both no success for years and finished close to each other yet our bandwagoners turned up, where were the baggers?
2023 Carlton finally learns to win the odd game without cheating, Richmond finish 13th same as we did in 2016 our supporters still turn up, yours are crawling out of the woodwork like termites in the old Richard Pratt stand
Attendance for Richmond was still the 3rd best last year even though our dynasty was over and we failed to make finals, Carlton goes from failure to finals and guess what, their numbers suddenly jump from a woeful 35k average in 2016 to a 50k average in 2023, so tell me who are the real bandwagon team
