Never said anything about the comps being of the same standard. But how can you expand a comp when you have 3-4 sides that clearly aren't up to the standard? How many years have Bacchus Marsh been on the bottom of the ladder?
Would be the same in most leagues I'd imagine

True, problem being that every potential recruit thinks that they are worth way over the odds and always seem to be offered said ridiculous amount by someone. This is never gonna change so the only other option is to build from below. They have a very good junior program and will eventually reap the benefits if same ridiculous offers are not forthcoming. Took a huge step forward against Redan but unfortunately took 2 steps back against Darley. Have bottomed out and, hopefully for the comps sake, will begin to move upward over the next couple of years. Patience please

Just reading other posts regarding the standard of the 2 leagues. But agree with Sprechy. BenFL have Kyneton terribel for year, the Marsh and Sebas in the BalFl, Central in the RDFL, Jacana in the EDFL B grade - the list goes on. Some teams have excuses - Kyneton is in the middle of Melb and Bendigo and find it hard to obtain good players, Sebas and Marsh are just terrible - if Darley can be strong why not the Marsh, Centrals compete with the other 2 Melton sides.

What works well is EDFL A grade - teams in B grade are really keen to get into A grade and A grade teams like to stay in A Grade. The standard of football increases in A grade - still in B grade teams are getting beaten by 200 points as the gap is massive.

It has been brought up a lot about a 2 division goldfield comp. At least in Div 2 Sebas, Marsh, Kyneton, Centrals etc can run around aganist each other and win more than 1 or 2 games a year. Increase in people taking an interest and generates more revenue for the clubs - which will improve the standard of football. Clubs in Div 1 would play the season out as they will not want to get relegated. The VCFL should be looking into this to improve the standard of country football. In the long run also help each football team financially with increased interest.

Agree but when you lack success it is hard to attract quality unless you are willing to pay over the odds amounts. Darley have had some success, have good finances and this always helps when recruiting. They also have very good recruiting people

Wasnt there talk of a super league kind of thing a few years back?

It is hard - you pay over the odds and most likely lose them the following year if the money dries up. At least in Div 2 they will be playing teams in the same situation - so even when times are tough they are able to compete and win some games - instead of week in week out hidings. Who is going to want to watch that, who is going to sponsor teams like that?

The VCFL should become more invloved and a look at an entire country football revamp. Country football in now a big business being run by volenteers. They seem so inactive and non exsistance.

Again recruiting becomes an issue, explaining that some weeks you will be travelling up to 2 hours each way to play an away game. Not an attractive option especially when you consider that your potential recruit may be coming from Geelong or Werribee. Big ask

Yeah they face that now - but the Marsh will be in games against Sebas, Kyneton, Stath, Nth City etc.

Have a third Div and bring in the RDFL sides and make it a super league. Marsh could then be playing sides like Centrals, Rockbank in Div 3 and would be one of the premier teams pushing for Div 2.

Something has to give - teams will end up like the merging dogs and leagues will have 5 or 6 teams left.

We got the same problem at the moment with North Shore, Newcomb and Belmont Lions. Everyone wants the 3 leagues to form a 3 division comp but the leagues wont do it. If nothings done within the next few years we'll see sides fold or merge.

The price of players from 5 - 10 years ago has gone through the roof. If you cannot pay top dollar good players will not come to your team or stay. At least with 3 div the bottom clubs will be playing teams in similar situation. How does a club that can only spend 80k on players compete with a team paying 200k?? The answer is that you can't. When it was 60k V 80K then you have a chance through good coaching and bringing your juniors through. The gap is now far to great for the teams without the financial backing.

The Melton clubs have 6 football clubs within a 15km radias. They cannot gernerate the funds to compete with the big clubs in the BalFL.

A lot of the leagues do not want 3 Div as you will require less administators to run country football. 90% will oppose to safe guard their job. Ward is the one that stands out as a person who would be willing to make a super league. That is why he is one of the best.

Once teams starting folding I think the VCFL will take notice - but by then it may be too late for a lot of clubs. Hopefully Kyneton is the 1st to go, then Sebas and then the Marsh.

Could not help myself. Things were getting way to serious on this thread.

It has been a good discussion and an interesting read. The situation that you are describing is similar up at home in the Central Murray. My club, Lalbert has struggled for numerous years with our main revenue coming from farming which means that the drought almost ruined us. We are now trying to rebuild and have managed to get some quality recruits such as former Melbourne player Daniel Ward. The problem that we have faced is that each year that we struggled our good locals were offered huge money toplay for opposition teams meaning that we either pay them to return home or look to pay other blokes to travel. Meanwhile other clubs are continuing to spend over 200k for players per year and we will struggle to catch up
