Can’t.

a) Pick 1 that year was Lachie Whitfield and they already count him.
b) Jack Martin was pick 1 in the mini-draft - Jesse was pick 2.

And just remember, for those picks we got Jono O’Rourke, Lachie Plowman & Aiden Corr - so, yay us.
Was going to have a good day at work.

Not now.

Thanks for that

This has been discussed previously on our board, but an interesting article about Tarryn Thomas. This part in particular:

“Thomas, while he spent time in Tasmania and thus was tied to North as a Next-Generation Academy (NGA) recruit (for Indigenous or multicultural players) in 2018, also grew up in Sydney’s west and has family in the harbour city, which could put him on the radar of the Giants and Swans, albeit those clubs already own strong playing lists …. Former Swans great and current board member Michael O’Loughlin sought to help Thomas on a personal level at one stage by sourcing a job for the young footballer”.

If I recall correctly from another earlier newspaper article his Mum lives in western Sydney, but that maybe be wrong. I think if he was to be looked at, and both clubs have very strong and good players’ cultures, you would really make him do 12 months in the Reserves and probably not as a Rookie but the VFL list.

Putting aside the ‘waste of talent’ football argument, it is always that much better to see a young man succeed irrespective of how his AFL career finishes.

How Tarryn Thomas can go to any club, at no draft cost

Story by Jake Niall

Sydney Morning-Herald

Suspended midfielder Tarryn Thomas can be signed as a free agent by any club, bar North Melbourne, at the end of the 2024 season.

Having parted company with Thomas, North Melbourne will not seek to hold him on the club list and ask for a trade – allowing him to be snared as a free agent by any of the 17 other clubs, at the end of this season.

But Thomas can only be signed by another club with the approval of the AFL, under the terms of his 18-match suspension for inappropriate behaviour towards a woman, the talented player also having to complete an education course before he can resume in the AFL.

North and Thomas’s management are close to reaching a financial settlement that would see him paid a greatly reduced share of his estimated $700,000 contract for 2024, the last year of his deal with the Kangaroos.

Thomas will be available as a delisted free agent under the rules because the club made the call to remove him from the playing list, not the player.

Thomas’ situation – the rules that surround his next move, North’s position and the AFL’s requirements – were confirmed to this masthead by three industry sources familiar with North Melbourne’s stance, the relevant rules and the AFL’s position and who did not wish to be on record given the sensitivity.

Thomas, who was suspended for 18 matches, cannot be picked up in the mid-season draft, but would be allowed to play in the state leagues once his suspension is over, subject to the AFL’s permission, the sources said.

Thomas was involved in a number of incidents over 2023 and this year – none of which resulted in criminal convictions, but which were sufficient for North to remove him from the team for a period and for the AFL to later suspend him for 18 matches – effectively ruling him out of this year’s season at the elite level.

Thomas, who turned 24 last Monday, is technically still on North Melbourne’s list, even though he is no longer part of the club. The AFL rules do not allow for him to be available for the mid-season draft.

A number of clubs are expected to investigate the feasibility of recruiting Thomas, a high-end talent, but there is no indication, as yet, where he could land, nor how many clubs would be willing to explore picking up a highly talented young footballer with a chequered record off the field.

Thomas, while he spent time in Tasmania and thus was tied to North as a Next-Generation Academy (NGA) recruit (for Indigenous or multicultural players) in 2018, also grew up in Sydney’s west and has family in the harbour city, which could put him on the radar of the Giants and Swans, albeit those clubs already own strong playing lists.

Former Swans great and current board member Michael O’Loughlin sought to help Thomas on a personal level at one stage by sourcing a job for the young footballer.

Thomas’ appeal will rest on his undoubted talent and also on the fact that he can simply be signed, without any trade or draft cost. But the clubs that consider him also will weigh up the potential risks.

North Melbourne decided to sack Thomas immediately on February 21 after the AFL found he had threatened a woman in direct messages multiple times, imposing an 18-match ban.

“The club has provided Tarryn with significant time, resources and support, but we’ve now arrived at a point where the individual’s needs don’t match those of the club,” North chief executive Jennifer Watt said.

“We know Tarryn needs help – for himself and for the women in his life – but it’s clear the path we’ve taken over the past 12 months hasn’t had the desired impact.

“To that end, we have made the decision to end Tarryn’s time at North Melbourne.

“This decision doesn’t come lightly or easily. We brought Tarryn to the club as a teenager and we acknowledge that he has faced complex and challenging circumstances over his life.

“We hope Tarryn will find the support that is right for him and that he does the work required to be the best version of himself.”

It is a measure of Thomas’s raw ability that he finished sixth in the Kangaroos’ best and fairest last year, despite playing only 12 of their 23 matches following an early season club suspension.
Would not be keen to offer him an afl contract but would be open to contracting him to our vfl side and give him a chance to..

This was peak SOS.
2012 draft
1. Whitfield (win, but so it should be at 1)
2. Jono O'Rourke (was a reach at the time, and proven to be so)
3. Lachie Plowman (solid career, but pick 3 seems high)
12. Kristian Jaksh
14. Aidan Corr (I think at 14 this is about an average return for 14)
Brodie Grundy not selected despite the coaching committee wanting him. (fail)

2013 draft (reasonable draft)
1. Tom Boyd (consensus first pick)
2. JKelly (terrific selection)
14. Cam McCarthy

2014
4. Jarrod Pickitt
6. Caleb Marchbank (injuries cruelled what I suspect was a good selection)
7. Paul Ahern

from there the next few years of SOS first rounds picks were mostly academy selections

pretty lean selections

98 games from a serviceable Aiden Corr from pick 14 was a reasonable return I suppose

Certainly had worse pick outcomes
that would be above average for pick 14

Which one constitutes "one" to you?
Definitely Corr, as the other guys mentioned.

He gave us eight years of service before leaving as a FA for a bigger deal than what we were going to give him.

I can't see how that's not a hit.

Very glad to NOT be paying that amount for him though...

Gosh he was slow in his kicking out of defense. One of the main reasons we were stuck in our defensive 50 for the last two years of Leon.

Yikes. North paid too much in my book.

That is horrendous. 2 retained on our list from 11 top 10 selections.
Look at what Caruso has done with his picks.

Agreed on all counts. The number of times I put my head in my hands when he had the ball. Anyone who stayed around that long early on has a soft spot in my heart though.

If you have been paying attention the TV commentators have started referring to Hogan as a pick 2. I think zero hanger or one of those then copied.

No coincidence that it only started when he started playing well.

That’s why I think Tim Mohr should be the Devils inaugural coach!

The bookends selections of Whitfield and Williams as a rookie selection were the only saving graces of the 2012 draft.

Boyd was ok, just injured. Cam McCarthy a total waste of a career, due to not wanting to train or something.
Thankfully we do better now. I am a bit disappointed we didn't accept West Coasts 2024r1, but I guess if Allen and Flynn weren't injured they might have won 2 games by now.
Could yet finish 14th, but most likely 17 or 18th.

I wanted us to take the future 1st.
Could have been used in a trade or to take a future star...
That said...we haven't seen Gothard yet.

Rival club linked to disgraced former Kangaroo

Story by Anna Pavlou

Wide World of Sports

Geelong general manager of footy Andrew Mackie has hinted that his club could be keen to enter talks with disgraced former North Melbourne midfielder Tarryn Thomas in the off season.

On the eve of the 2024 season, the Kangaroos axed the troubled player after he was initially suspended by the league for 18 matches for alleged inappropriate behaviour.

Thomas spent much of the 2023 season also bouncing from controversy to controversy.

He was stood down in February of last year when allegations first emerged, and then again at the end of March.

The midfielder returned to training with the VFL program in mid-April under directive from club specialists, before fresh allegations were released in January of this year.

However, the Cats have suggested they would keep the door ajar for the troubled star, with Kane Cornes championing the possibility of the 23-year-old's return to the big time if he was to do it through Geelong.

Mackie explained that the Cats will always look into players that have experienced "bumpy" careers, to see if they could be better fit at their club.

"At times if you want to be in the market for players that are really talented and have that skill set, often if they become available to you, it means that something has been a little but bumpy for them along the way," Mackie said on SEN Radio.

The former Cat, who won three premierships in the hoops, connected Thomas' troubles to 2022 Geelong premiership forward Tyson Stengle, who joined the Cats after a plethora of off-field issues at Adelaide.

Stengle joined the Cats after being delisted by the Crows in 2021, going on to boot four goals in Geelong's 81-point grand final victory over Sydney in 2022.

"The Stengle story is much known. We're an individual case-by-case basis," Mackie said.

"We do a lot of work on a lot of players. We look at the positive and what their footy skill set can be to us, then we work backwards from there."

Cornes is confident that Geelong has already been in touch with Thomas, who played 69 games for North Melbourne after debuting in 2019.

"I'd be surprised if that phone call hasn't been made (from the Cats to Thomas)," Cornes said on Nine's Footy Classified on Monday night.

"That connection to Geelong is the obvious one.

"That's the obvious club and the only club I think could have success with him (Thomas)."

Thomas was delisted by North Melbourne in February of 2024.

REPORT: GIANTS PLANNING TO MAKE ALL-AUSTRALIAN STAR THE HIGHEST PAID PLAYER EVER AT HIS POSITION

GWS is planning to make Sam Taylor the highest paid key defender in the history of the game, according to Sam McClure.

The 24-year-old was the All-Australian full-back in 2022 and likely would have been again in 2023 if not for injury.

He comes out of contract at the end 2025, with McClure reporting that the Giants are keen to lock him in before the end of this year.

“I want to put him on the radar – Sam Taylor, the premier key defender of the competition right now … Matthew Lloyd has compared him to Matthew Scarlett, he’s out of contract at the end of next year,” McClure told the Tradies podcast.

“A month ago, the Giants opened up discussions to extend him. My understanding is they are currently looking at a six-year deal, potentially more, and that it would mean that he is the highest paid key defender in the history of the game, surpassing Jeremy McGovern, whose contract peaked at just over $1.3 million.

“He’s on $800,000 at the moment (Taylor) and it goes up with the CBA next year. Taylor earning $800,000 is as good a value as you get, particularly for a position that is very hard to find players of his value.

“I think the Giants would like for him to sign for longer. They’d like a Josh Kelly or Stephen Coniglio eight or nine-year deal, but I think the starting point will be six.

“But he will clearly be one of the best paid players in the competition from 2026 onwards … and they’ll want to get this done before the end of this year, they won’t want him going into next year out of contract.

“The West Coast Eagles have already flagged with his management that they’re significantly interested, as they should be.

“I would be highly surprised if he was to leave the Giants.”

Taylor won GWS’ best and fairest in his All-Australian year of 2022 and has had an outstanding start to the 2024 season.

Most were surprised we offered it but thank you for saving us from ourselves. What’s the likelihood of Perryman and Cumming re-signing? Perryman in particular seems like a great clubman and a few teams after him.

Exhibit A as to why you shouldn’t get a PP; but that’s a debate for the main board
