Dom Brew has won Werribee’s best and fairest
Jackson Kornberg is new coach of Frankston

3 year deal

Werribee coaching decision down to two is my information.

The untried Jarryn Geary or the experienced Brendan McCartney. Jordan Russell and Jack Ziebell (potential playing coach) were in the hunt before they opted for jobs within the AFL.

I doubt Frankston in the comp still in 3 years time

Discussion ramping up for SA clubs to join… maybe even WA clubs

The SA clubs alone joining will probably demand the AFL start charging a licence fee.. to cover the increased cost of the league… and that will kill off the stand-alone Vic clubs without pokies machines

If they have any foresight Preston, Coburg and Frankston should be starting talks about creating a Melbourne super league

Not beyond Williamstown, Port and Werribee joining them later on if a national reserves comp starts later this decade

What about Southport? They turn a huge profit from pokies machines. Money doesn't seem to be an issue for them.

The above article was mentioned in the Brisbane VFL thread.

"There are also seven stand-alone sides - Werribee, Williamstown and Port Melbourne who have financial advantages through pokie machines, plus Southport, Frankston, Northern Bullants and Coburg."

Hilarious that they didn't include Southport in the 'financial advantages through pokie machines' category

Wish I could say I was surprised but Vic journalists rarely do research for anything footy related in Queensland and this is just another example of that. Southport is most definitely a club that benefits greatly from pokie machines and there's even historical significance that plays a part in the existence of both high level Aussie rules and rugby league on the Gold Coast. Long story short - back in the early 90s pokie machines were illegal in Queensland and Southport were broke, but because the Gold Coast is a border town we had a professional NRL club based just over the border in the Tweed that used our city's name and took advantage of NSW's pokie machine laws. That all changed in 1992 when Queensland legalised pokie machines and Queenslanders stopped travelling over the border to play the pokies. Suddenly Southport became extremely profitable and the NRL team based in the Tweed was killed off within a few years due to financial issues.

Southport wouldn't exist if it wasn't for their historical pokie machine revenue. That's just a fact but these days they've diversified their revenue streams to a point where they may not actually need pokie machine revenue to survive due to other ventures like running their own on-site Mantra hotel.

Yeah, they have a gym, restraunt, hotel and probably more all on site but I would still assume the large part of the revenue still comes from those (300? IIRC) pokie machines

Looks like Ben Jolley has retired from VFL and football altogether. Williamstown have announced on socials he is leaving.

Well played to him!

Kudos to him, one of those rare footballers who played almost his entire career in the VFL. Record games holder for Willy despite playing 5 season at Bendigo VFL and Port.

Done it all at Willy, multiple B&Fs, life membership, including with the VFL, and captain of the 2015 Premiership side.

Jarryn Geary has just been announced as a Development and Player Leadership Coach with the Western Bulldogs.

Wonder if Paul Amy will put his Big Boy Pants on and do a true story on Port and exodus of half their list including most of their top 22 players and how it has happened. Could even step up and ask about Cameron.

Don’t ask the ex doggie office boy to give him another fluffy Bennell number, put new GM under the pump.

He just did a story via code sports regarding Ethan Phillips and his decision to join Box Hill which will allow him to train with Hawthorn during the preseason. Article also mentions Jake Gasper been courted by Central Districts SANFL, Matt Signorello been courted by Perth in the WAFL while Nash Holmes is playing local footy.

There are more player departures taking place too. They will struggle to recruit to replace these players. Link below for anyone interested and subscribed to CODE sports
