2019 VFL/VFLW season

Standalone VFL sides all play each other twice, Werribee, Port Melbourne, Williamstown, Coburg and Frankston.

Based on that Willy and Port should be laughing all the way to the top 4 before Willy drop their 10th straight prelim.

So the fixtures are out.

Happy with Essendon's VFL fixture, honestly have no idea about the VFLW one. Coburg, it's disappointing that the only big AFL club we have at home is Essendon, though I am happy with Willy and Port at home.
Pies in round 1 not big enough for you. Don't worry us tigers think they are minnows as well. :D

Missed that one. Also Willy won the flag 3 years ago.

Big day of signings down at North Port, with Jarryd Blair joining the Borough and long term Willy champ Ben Jolley crossing over to the light side after more than 200 games as a Seagull.

However, the squad still looks a little light on in defense with the departures of Mihocek, Tynan, Viojo-Rainbow, Mascitti, Sandilands and Cook over the past two years and not many obvious like for like replacements being made.

Disappointed Jolley chose Port ahead of Essendon. Would have loved to see him finish his career where he started.

Can't believe Jolls will be playing with the enemy. Top fella - I wish him the best reluctantly

Jolley pulling the reverse Billy Swan! Hoped he'd end up at Coburg, was never likely I guess.
We've signed Steve Stroobants mate, finally getting a VFL quality player in after our spate of outs... Wouldn't be shocked to see him captain the side either. Maybe Peter McEvoy.

Classy half forward? Building an okay forward line, just need to be able to get the bloody pill down there. Had Mello pencilled in as skipper but he's obviously gone.

We'll play him as a mid. Too thin in there.

Dons could be close to flag favourites. Aylett is a huge signing, haven't really had that mature body in the middle that can go toe-to-toe with the likes of Munro and Wagner (and it showed in the prelim)

Kanakis another Coburg player poached. Fantastic!
I wouldn't be too disappointed. Wasn't exactly popular.

Essendon have signed Ray Connellan and Liam McKenna (averaged 23 disposals in his WAFL career) along with Luke Tynan apparently. Building a very strong core, hopefully Connellan can somewhat play the Hind role.

Thoughts on who'd be favourites? Don't think BH will go B2B, lost a couple of good players plus Mitchell being out will affect their midfield, Willy/Port will be strong again, Casey are hard to beat at home plus they'll have a stronger defence with Frost likely to play more games for Casey this year, andobviously Essendon's signings are impressive after narrowly going down in the prelim this season.

Thoughts on AFLs proposed AFL 2nd tier competition by 2022. Death knell?
Pretty much. Willy and Werribee will go dominate WRFL, Coburg will be mid table EDFL, Sandy/Port in the SFL, Preston in the NFL, Box Hill EFL. Frankston probably MPFNL, Casey not sure on.

AFL Reserves will not happen in the next 5 years. Costs are too high for all AFL clubs, some of which are broke. As long as VFL clubs are financially viable they'll be fine. Let's be honest Box Hill, Northern, Casey, Sandringham exist in name only. The only reason they have not become full AFL reserve sides is because their AFL master's need their ground. St Kilda will soon no longer need Sandringham's ground though, so they are at risk which is why they've started to act as a stand alone...membership focus etc...

If you support a VFL standalone club, buy a membership. If you already have a membership look at their sponsorship options and try to convince friends/family to dip in and take out a sponsorship package. It's cold hard cash that will keep the standalone clubs in the VFL.

As for Eth-Dog's earlier post, Coburg would beat Aberfeldie by 12 goals. Don't underestimate the VFL comp, as recently as 4 years ago, Coburg's current list would be good enough to make VFL finals. Since then though the AFL reserve teams have topped up year on year with ex-AFL players to protect their new draftees (Richmond Steven Morris, Coll Alex Woodward, Essendon Hocking, Footscray Monfries) to the point that Coburg are playing against 16-20 current AFL listed players aswell as 3-5 recently delisted ex-AFL players most weeks. How much would Aberfeldie lose to the Northern Blues by when they have 18 Carlton listed players (inc talls Casboult, Lobbe, Phillips, De Koning, Kerr) plus Josh Hill, J O'Rourke and K Collins this year?

Hocking for the Dons. Tynan is 50/50 with them too. And I seriously doubt that Coburg would beat Abers by 12 goals. Abers have basically an open checkbook and normally have as many if not more former AFL players on their books as any of those sides.
