Freo was the team I was expecting to nudge into a contender.
True. Yep cats beat my mob in round 1.

Dockers were not full strength. Yes I know cats were not either.

No Darcy, Shai Bolton, Hayden Young, Nathan Fyfe or Michael Walters.

I expect cats to make top 8. It's a loss. I would be more worried being belted by 10 goals to a bottom 6 side.

It was 35 degrees, Freo were in it until the start of the final quarter and can understand how they just let Geelong get away from them in the last once the game was over.

Round 1 is always the game with the most cramps and lack of match fitness. So once the Dockers got behind, it wasn't hard to see why they let Geelong get a few more easy goals. Saints was similar, I thought.

But Carlton made Richmond look like world-beaters for two quarters.

I voted for Port Adelaide simply because of the margin. A 15-goal loss points to a thoroughly uncompetitive performance and is such a flat start to a season for a team who is supposed to be a top 4 fancy.

Carlton's loss was also evidently bitterly disappointing, but I suspect they'll bounce back and show a bit more against Hawthorn. I think they raced out to a 7-goal lead against the Tigers and decided to put the cue in the rack because the players thought the win would just happen after that. They did try to wrestle back late in the 4th but their momentum was shot.

I was a bit surprised by how much West Coast lost by but I considered this a statement game for the Suns where they travel interstate to play a weaker team and put them to the sword, something they generally haven't done in the past. Disappointing for West Coast but the Suns basically had to rise to the occasion and set the tone for the year. They've shown their ability to win at home and in Darwin and know they need to win a few away games to finally make the 8.

Thought Port's performance was a statement they're purposely conceding the year as I theorized, with Kenny completely checking out and just milking Port for more money. Richmond might not be as bad as last year, so who knows if Carlton were beaten by a bad side, well see as the year goes on. Richmond could end up being like 2010 wooden spooners West Coast 2011 season.

It's Port, they have Richmond this week and if the Tigers upset them or even get close at home then Kenny needs to say to the club, this transition isn't working and walk away! They were shocking against the Pies!
Ken's been milking Port out of money for years, he's not giving up that easy. The only time he's leaving is when they straight up fire him.

You also have to be honest here, losing to a good Geelong side at Geelong is pretty much expected.

I see alot of posters claiming its Carlton and then daylight, but you would do well to take a very good look at their team from last week.

Forward line - Harry then no names
Mids - that is their strength
Backs - Saad and Weitering - then no names

They have also lost 8 of their last 10. I think the few stars they have fooled us all into believing they are a contender.

All of that said, the worst performance was 100% Carlton 😂 😂 😂 😂 😂 😂 😂 😂 😂 😂 😂

Carlton were at least good in the first half. West Coast don't have a midfield, saints list is north tier. Port and Freo top 2 for me

Saad is doing that muslim water fast too I think. Their list is good but their kidding themselves if they think Voss will ever take them anywhere, bloke is an absolute numpty.

I actually don't think its Carlton, they still were able to lead by 7 goals early but somehow lost by a small margin, i get it was a shock and unacceptable for them to lose.

But Freo, Port & StKilda were woeful for 4 quarters. They showed nothing.
Great third quarter by Freo but apart from that very true.

Correct, they shredded their depth in the off-season and are now a bottom 4 side

Carlton easily the worst performance

  • 41 point lead blown
  • Against Richmond that is not expected to win a game for the entire season
  • Talent on their list expected to be top 4
  • Coming off a final in which they were embarrassed and expected to win by 100 points

Carlton easily. Embarrassing loss to a team that won only 2 games last year

Carlton. End thread.
It's not just all of the above - it's that the quality of the game was, apart from its closeness, terrible. Just appalling to watch.

Carlton, closely followed by Fremantle.

Carlton for disappearing completely after half time, and Freo for only appearing in one quarter. I'd normally be lenient towards any club playing Geelong at home, but Freo has a good record at GMHBA

Thought the West Coast smashing was the worst, pretty stunned look on Reid’s face after the game.
Carlton kicked 1.5 in the last, Tiges had two rushed behinds and only missed twice for the entire game.
That won’t be happening again any time soon.
I really think that loss is on Vossy not being able to get his players firing

We’ve generally struggled against Fremantle (and GWS) there in recent years, and we’ve lost six games at Kardinia Park over the past two seasons. The Doggies went winless at GMHBA Stadium from 2004 to 2022 but have now beaten us twice. Although Geelong and Adelaide don’t play in Geelong this year, they usually do annually, as you’re often shafted by big Victorian clubs refusing to travel down the highway so I rate your chance next season.

Returning to the thread, I actually believe the poll results are in the correct order.

As much as I love laughing at Carlton, it really has to be Port Adelaide. Same coach since 2013, finished 2nd last year, reached the prelims, so you would have expected something of quality. Instead they got obliterated right out of the gate. At least Carlton showed up for a half of footy.
