He plays the game on his own terms. He also kicked 42 goals for the dons this year and they got rid of him for pick 53

Maybe the giants feel they have enough hard running small forwards that they can carry jake for his 40 goals - good luck to them.
Dons letting Stringer walk was the smartest thing they have done in a long time. Epitome of a front runner, if he isn’t playing North, Richmond or West Coast he isn’t worth it.

Even an out of sorts Stringer in late 2016 was still a better runner, fits into structures and team player than the last three years of Essendon Stringer.

And we were comparing an out of sorts late 2016 Stringer to the All-Australian quality player we saw immediately before, he might not have been an All-Australian player in the 2016 finals, but he was still a best-22 in a finals team quality player, his 3 goals 0 behinds from difficult shots in the semi vs. Hawthorn were critical and good performance for example.

Yep - precisely. We took a calculated gamble that Stringer's lack of professionalism would eventually catch up to him later in his career, and that he would help his teams win games less and less as time went on. That calculated gamble was correct.

There was about a 6 week spurt in 2021 that Stringer was a very good player, other than that, he's been woeful for Essendon. There's a reason Essendon have lost more games than they've won, with Stringer in the team, despite all the big club advantages. His output of statistics probably least represent his value to a team of any player, his lack of structural running and support of teammates (the anti-Vandermeer) and selective use of effort hand back a few goals that he's managed to kick himself.

Despicable. Hopefully the perpetrators are caught... if only their punishment could be to be left in a burning house with no way out.

(I'm happy to be progressive on most issues, but serious crimes like this need consequences, not rehabilitation.)

Thoughts with her family, her mother obviously shattered, and her brother on his honeymoon thinking his sister/home/dog were safe in his absence. ☹

Hopefully they get locked up for a long time

What a load of crap re. Callan Ward. We didn't allow him to leave. GWS offered a massive deal that we didn't have the capacity to match. Also, we received Jack Macrae as compensation who kicked the winning goal against Ward's team in the 2016 Prelim.

Surely a better nomination would be ending up with Griffen and Tom Williams as our targeted 1x gun midfielder and 1x gun KPP in the 2024 Draft. Had we decided to target out gun KPP first, we'd have ended up with Lance Franklin and with pick six we probably would have settled for Jordan Lewis assuming Hawthorn or Richmond took Griffen.

Also this one has to been to death, but the Aker situation should have been handled better in 2010. I'm sure we all have our own thoughts, some more passionate thoughts than others, but in my view, the leadership group should have been mature enough to let it work. Who knows how 2010 would have ended if we had the experience of Aker in September alongside Barry Hall?

Also, how much earlier should WCE have been dealing to Ben Cousins? Should the dealing have started in 1996?

After we lowballed him. The club badly messed it up, but at least got Macrae in return.

Happy New Year to all.

An incredibly strange option.

In hindsight, I don’t think there’s one single person that would have preferred Ward on the list compared to Macrae given what we achieve as a team, as well as his personal efforts.

It's an interesting one, because we definitely low-balled him, but I don't know that he was ever THAT good that he justified an $800K a year wage at GWS either.

We definitely should have kept him for even $500K a year, but then we wouldn't have Macrae and who knows if we'd have 2016 either, so.... 🤷‍♂️

If that's our worst decision, then we've done okay.

However, I'd argue that not drafting Franklin when we had the pick before the Hawks is our worst decision. Of course, this is in hindsight, as most draft experts at the time likely rated Griffen higher than Buddy.

If we are going down that route Jarrad Grant over Dangerfield, Everett over J.Riewoldt, Ayce Cordy as a first round F/S. Christian Howard over Nat Fyfe hell even Tom Williams over Jordan Lewis in that same draft all far worse,

Side note holy **** we sucked at drafting top 25 picks in the early 2000's

Oh dear. Every single club has missed out on drafting players who turned out to be champions. Not once but many times.

What a meaningless exercise.

Draft misses are very boring, every club has them. We did have some big whiffs before Dalrymple arrived.

the Aker call is probably the most interesting one, considering how close we were.

If 2016 goes the other way then the Tom Boyd trade/contract would probably be discussed - huge risk but paid off in a pretty unexpected way.

Bevo also has some post 2016 finals blunders to his name that could be worth a mention - Crozier in 2020 and Wests non selection in 2024 stand out. McLean in 2022 was a gamble that backfired too.

Or could discuss the outcomes of the Dunkley and Smith trades given we weren’t proactive in trading out players we knew wanted out (Dunks still gave us a couple of very good years including contributing to another GF appearance).

the Ward thing in a vacuum was pretty bad but we got an all timer Bullgod out of it. And really could have gotten more given what Melbourne got for Scully.

Could have been an interesting article.

Who cares if we loss Callan Ward we got Macrae and won a flag

Boring
We identified and drafted well with Macrae. I think that's an independent good football action seperate from the loss of Ward. We have to see it as the fact that once we lost Ward, all we got was the compensation pick. If in retrospect we ask the question "would you prefer the career of Ward or the average career of the compensation pick", Ward is always the better choice. It was still a stuff-up to let him go.

The average career of pick 6 especially. Cursed pick for quite a while besides Macrae.

Aker kicked 49 and 43 goals in back to back years for us, completely forget that.

He was quite possibly a flog, and he did something pretty dumb, but successful teams are never full of angels. Even 2016 lol.

Depends on what your priorities are really. but it could have very possibly cost us a GF appearance at minimum.

we made a stand and maybe it was right but…would have taken Aker in that prelim and cut him when the season was done.

We still seem to have huge issues managing the “difficult” talents today imo. It’s a balance, but I’m not looking for role models, I just want us to win lol.

The Cats for example do not give a shit as long as you’re playing winning footy. They will even cover it up for you. Probably why they appealed to Baz.
