What grade were Ormond in when he won the bnf?

Outside of Davidson, his probably the best chance to play senior footy early if his already been up against senior body’s.

His ball use looks great from the small highlight package. Really like the look of this pick up.
I don’t think he’s much chance at all. He’ll be behind all of Kennedy, Harmes, Sanders, Garcia & Gallagher for that half forward/mid role.

This is very much a selection for 2-3 years down the track when we transition away from our current on ball brigade. He’ll be given plenty of centre bounce time at VFL level and room to develop.

Even if he has to push past a few he is very developed so much so in an article I read about him a while back the Sandy coach basically said that he is a slot in an go player. Wouldn't be surprised at all if he gets a few games this year.

If Ormond is at a good standard (No idea about VAFA) and his winning senior BNF the chances are he is pretty advanced for a 18 year old.

If his well developed id like his chances to play well at vfl level. Subsequently I don’t think in the bevo era we have held back a kid performing and playing a team a game at vfl level (Maybe Buss - but we couldn’t afford to blood him last year as every game was close to must win when he was playing well).

They play 4th division in the VAFA (Div 1).

Would probably be comparable to the better teams in WRFL Div 2.

The late pick reactions are the best.

These kids are a massive chance to miss, so the realisation their lives have changed forever is pretty special.
I think of the poor families, at the ready with their phones, and their kid misses out :(

But the message should be, keep trying, keep improving, don't give up. There are other opportunities out there if you work hard.

Sorry to come on your board , but ive watched Luke from early juniors and he is a beauty and coming from a great family.
He won the Ormond B&F in Premier C VAFA as a 16 yo , started the year before at 15 , the youngest ever Ormond player and did so well Sandy Dragons put him on the list . He only played 3 games this year and got BOG in 2 of them with 7 votes from umps ,in one game in had over 60 possessions .
You are absolutely blessed to get him , just a good person.
Also Sam Davidson played Ormond juniors in under 15s 16s and 17s

Kennedy ranks 1 for our pre-season time trial.

I'm going to call this early (as much as you can three weeks into pre-season). I reckon this is a steal of a pick.

The draft industry over-indexes on athletic traits and wow factor of highlights.

Here we have a smart, instinctive footballer who didn't rise up the rankings because he's not six foot and is not quick.

But instead we have a player who can run, a player who can read the play, a player who can find the ball, a player who will do the defensive stuff, and a player who has decent enough skills and can kick off both feet.

We have a player who was cut from his U18 squad and dominated senior footy to find his way back on it.

Importantly, we have a player who wasn't part of the now ever dominant private school apparatus - he went to a normal, suburban secondary school - and had proved that he could fight his way onto a team at junior levels that do.

Like I said earlier - getting massive Rory Sloane vibes with this pick. Not part of the private school apparatus, had to prove themselves in the U18 setup, six foot or shorter, no highlights package of athleticism. But sneaky good at reading the play and using fitness and running capacity. Both came from junior clubs without much pedigree - Sloane from Upwey-Tecoma (Sloane remains the only player drafted from that club since 2001), Kennedy from Ormond, who the last players to play AFL games were the Frost brothers and Gawn, drafted almost 15 years ago.

Not surprised he won that trial . Good interview with him on your socials as well , Sam Davidson was an Ormond junior as well . Also Matt Suckling played at Ormond after you and knows Luke as well

Senior teammate of Matt Suckling and I wonder if there was a bit of an inside word on his worth ethic and character

I'd say more Lachie Neal type get up.

MattyK as a half forward? We are playing guys there right now whose primary attribute is running power, I cant see us changing that policy to put in a 'plodder'. Sam Davidson may be a chance if he can learn the ropes.

I really have no idea what we do with our resting mids these days. Do we rest them in a pocket or is it bench only?

Great analaysis

FWIW I posted on WOOF that L Kennedy would be the first of the 2024 draft to play AFL.

He always looked the most skilled by hand and foot of the 5 players we drafted. Anybody that can win the ball in close and give it off cleanly to a team-mate is going to be very valuable. He's also a good tackler as we see in the limited available highlights videos. Wing, half-forward and part-time mid makes him very versatile.
