This weird discussion turn clearly has no place in this thread.
Discussions of the future captaincy potential of Sam are obviously appropriate.

Discussion of other future captaincy candidates less so, particularly when said other candidate has struggled so badly at AFL level that bringing their name up in this way could easily be considered trolling.
How does Darcy being captain have no place in a Darcy thread?
Darcy is a solid option. As is Haughton. And Beast mode recruited a possible future Tasmanian captain.
I also thought Sam's dad becoming captain at the time was worthy of discussion, I was always more in the Johnno camp.

And saying a first year player struggled, while he actually showed many good signs, is keyboard stuff to call "trolling".

He said talk of Darcy as a future captain is appropriate, but questioning the future of Sanders isn’t. Which is correct for this thread.

Saying Sanders has struggled at AFL level is an exaggeration. He has still played well for a first year player, and is clearly developing like every inside midfielder does in their first few years. It’s quite obvious he’s going to be a star.

As is Haughton

But keeping Sanders may need to involve captaincy.
If he kicks on we won't be able to match dollars.
People do realise Sanders is a Tasmanian? And Tasmania is going to join the comp?
A thread talking about future captaincy needs to include all players, and all circumstances

Go home factor is more of a factor for some players than it is others and is often less of a factor than the huge amounts of money the home state club offers.

Most interstate draftees settle into their new state, establish a life there and never show any interest in going back home and I could see that being even more the case with Tasmania which for many would be the most boring place in the country to be a young bloke.

Sanders is also from the North. He'd have to live in Hobart if he was playing for the Tasmanian team. The go home factor isn't anywhere near as strong here.

Largely agree, but fir slightly different reasons.

Tassie is a 40-50 minute flight from Melbourne, depending if you're from the north or south.

I'm not sure the go-home factor will have much impact when the team is building a list. I'd suspect there would be more attraction from being in the initial squad (and lure of captaincy/leadership), plus $$$, than just moving "back" when you're less than an hour away.

That's for Tasmanians playing for Vic teams.

Sydney and Adelaide based Tasmanians maybe more of a go-home lure, and Qld and Perth teams likely the most impact from the go-home factor.

It would have been interesting to see the machinations if Jack Riewoldt, Matthew Richardson, or even further back, Steve McPherson, Simon Atkins, Paul Hudson, Alistair Lynch, Gale brothers, Wright, Paul Williams, Pritchard, Manson, Barwick, Cook, Minton-Connell, etc were still playing. Even the Rawlings brothers, Ben Harrison, etc. The ones from that list that had the opportunity were always keen to pull on the SOO jumper, but would they have left successful Vic teams to play in front of significantly smaller crowds?

The question we should really all be asking is, Was Sanders a tough, hard at it public school footballer? Or was he a scared, pea heart private school footballer?

Once we know the answer to this, we’ll be closer to knowing his suitability for captaincy.

Not sure I want to add to a discussion about Sanders in the Sam Darcy thread but I suspect too much concern in here about what the former may or may not do once Tasmania enter the competition in 2028. So much water to flow under the bridge between then and now. He may not even be a regular midfield player if others step up and surpass him. He'll most likely be with us for the next three years so let's just concern ourselves with the now.

I still think Naughton gets the captaincy before Sam does.
Sam will just have to be content with being the best tall player in the competition. Poor guy.

Sanders is getting massive pressure from his family to go home
Whaaa? He's from Northern Tas not Hobart (Melb-Hbt flight is quicker than the drive). And he was already living in Melb for footy the year prior his draft. Tassie may well come for him, but him and his family have clearly prioritised his footy over location.

I met his auntie & uncle at a wedding in Hobart recently, the family are really pushing for him to go back to Tassie.
Doesn't mean he will, but his family want him to.

Pretty selfish of the family if so.

Pavlich would be a good example I guess.
Not sure about the Tasmanian Shaming stuff though lol
Different strokes for different fokes.

His dad is 'football royalty' in tassie (launceston at last) Im sure they want him to come home - who wouldnt? And it will be for a lot more dollars than if he stays with us.

Who really knows, but at least tassie will be armed with a bunch of very low picks to exchange for some mature stars. If I understand that right ? Getting just 'after your 1st pick' compo or some crap like that would be a disaster.

“Low picks” is always ambiguous to my mind.

To me it means low value - ie picks in the third or fourth round. Or even later.

But it could also mean a first round pick to other people (as Stefoid obviously intended above). “Low” in that sense means a low pick number (eg 1-10) not a low value pick.

To avoid confusion I prefer to use terms like early or late picks.

Anyway, sorry for getting a little off topic. Carry on. The Darcy discussion is a fascinating one!
