Unretiring a number is such a rare occurrence.

Doing it without significant reason cheapens the decision to retire it in the first place.

To do it because someone was traded from the same club as the player whose number was retired or after an arbitrary amount of time is strange.
It wasn't retired like Michael Jordan's was retired as a great player, it was retired as a mark of respect and so that the follow up player didn't have to bear a burden of carrying John's hopes sort of thing.

Darren Millane's number will probably never be unretired whilst anyone who was alive in 1990 has some input into Collingwood, because he was a long term player, a premiership hero for Collingwood who was massively loved by the Collingwood fans. John was only at the club for a year and it was done out of respect.

Plus if I recall they said at the time it was being "temporarily retired".

Whatever the reason, a number is retired out of respect.

The plan was to re-allocate it in 2014.

It was never deemed appropriate to do so until now.

It seems like the primary (if not only factor) that has now made it appropriate to reassign is because of the trade circumstances.

Ultimately they can do whatever they want.

The uncomfortable truth is that if Russell Ebert had passed away during his playing career, it would be a different scenario to this and his number would have been retired, possibly forever. Retiring it until now is a very reasonably respectful decision given the circumstances. To bring it back for Joe is as good a reason as any.

I thought we were going to bring it back after Boak retired, but he's lasted forever.

Huge work rate up and down the ground. Million times better at crumbing than the donkeys we were working with last year. Not great above his head and needs space, too weak under body contact for me. Really good skills and vision reminds me of a forward version of Amon.

Plus if I recall they said at the time it was being "temporarily retired".

I'm in favour of the number being temporarily retired and now reinstated, but, after the club's recent hijinks with names on the Geof Motley race, I almost wonder if the McCarthy family got an email from membership@e.pafc.com.au asking if they'd like to pay to keep 35 retired for another ten years.

I thought I'd give Joe a bump.

A very good game and just the type of player we need in the side, the type of guy who doesn't mind getting his knees dirty but can also produce very meaningful works in scoring chains.

He hit the deck a few times and farmed out a really good handball. The spectacular Powell-Pepper goal only exists because of Richard's hard ball get and dish to IIRC Moraes to give off to Sam.

He worked his butt off the whole game and kept it real.

A nice few sidesteps down back that allowed space for himself and others to run on.

Just a quiet, no nonsense, I'm not a first round pick so I'll work my butt off and make contests type of footballer. Neat skills. Intelligent play.

He was our best sprinting player along with Darcy. He also topped out on some other tracking stats.

He had 25 disposals and 12 scoring involvements over the game.

Generally speaking, Jed, Francis Evans and Narkle were lucky to get to double digit disposals last year.

With the work rate of Richards, Powell-Pepper and Byrne-Jones, we will be able to use those runs from the backline to great use with the help of these medium forwards.

Can easily see him play half forward or wing.

Moraes created that opportunity, after Georgiades toe poked it forward. Moraes had the brilliant ground ball get and handball to Richard’s who then dished to SPP.

But yes, Richards played a part and was instrumental in several other goals including the Georgiades second quarter goal.

I noticed you talked up Richards in the other thread.

Is a big upgrade on Evans and McEntee.

Thought he played well and looks like a smart forward. And at 25, he should be.

There was another scintillating handball further back from Richards that caught my attention. In a tight situation, he seemed to weave it between two Richmond player to a running team mate. It was really Robbie Gray-like in skill, vision, and audacity.

I think he is going to be a ripper!
